Today's tune is a live cover by<b> </b></i><span style="text-align: left;"><b><i>AJ Lee & Blue Summit</i></b></span><i><b> </b>playing "Meet Me In The Morning"</i></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/kznbPxCsCL8/maxresdefault.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="800" height="225" src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/kznbPxCsCL8/maxresdefault.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><b>Thoughts on Original</b>:<div>From <a href="http://www.rockthebodyelectric.com/2022/04/dylan-cover-525-lukas-nelson-potr-meet.html" target="_blank">the first time</a> we tackled a cover of this tune:<br />A swaggering track that rose out of the ashes of "Call Letter Blues" (which was later released on <i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bootleg_Series_Volumes_1%E2%80%933_(Rare_%26_Unreleased)_1961%E2%80%931991" target="_blank">The Bootleg Series Volume 1-3</a></i>) "Meet Me In The Morning" is a shot of blues after the blissfully mournful "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" as it kicks off side two of the famous <i>Blood On The Tracks</i>. The song is one of the ones Dylan recorded in NYC for <i>Blood on the Tracks </i>and it pulses with the city's energy. A cool note about this straight ahead song (which is tailored made for covering) is that <b>Jack White</b> is a big fan, playing it at times at his shows and got Dylan to perform it for the only time ever on <a href="https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/bob-dylan/2007/ryman-auditorium-nashville-tn-23d73c93.html" target="_blank">9/19/07 in Nashville, TN</a>. <br /><br /><b>Cover:</b></div><div><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/kznbPxCsCL8?si=DVdyA1B3iINvwVGI" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe><br /><br /><b>Thoughts on Cover Artist</b>:<br />This is the first time we have heard <b><a href="https://www.bluesummitmusic.com/" target="_blank">AJ Lee & Blue Summit</a></b>, who are, AJ Lee, | Lead vocals & mandolin Scott Gates | guitar Sullivan Tuttle | guitar Morgan Blaney | bass Jan Purat | fiddle. and are playing this benefit for the Endometriosis Foundation of America at DROM in NYC. <br /><div><br /><b>Thoughts on Cover</b>:</div></div><div>A more electric take than might be expected from this more bluegrass/folk leaning outfit, but a cool cover that is eerie and touch dark, yet not overwhelming. It also marks the first time<span style="color: #04ff00;"> RtBE </span>has ever heard wah-wah on a mandolin which is pretty wild. A really cool cover for a good cause. </div>Xeyedandpainlesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06664001703375540379noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3366901906249122079.post-56579420560594670732024-03-17T10:34:00.007-04:002024-03-17T10:34:00.232-04:00Happy St. Patrick's Day!Wishing everyone a happy safe and fun St. Patrick's Day from<span style="color: lime;"> RtBE</span> and we might as well throw in a self plug.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih6fhQTg6UKLKpfLSIRBkG6UzoLwwyuI2rz0LK7VWBnlesR2a82PPC9OcBR5zsOSpkOlyKaSjOSG3DYSni6FPqp0SjNYdx01gxkEVI-9iUEX7dfm-tAb1AHfJPCGiYg6iHrRFztGm0Rot7/s1600/IMG_0464.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih6fhQTg6UKLKpfLSIRBkG6UzoLwwyuI2rz0LK7VWBnlesR2a82PPC9OcBR5zsOSpkOlyKaSjOSG3DYSni6FPqp0SjNYdx01gxkEVI-9iUEX7dfm-tAb1AHfJPCGiYg6iHrRFztGm0Rot7/s1600/IMG_0464.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />Here is <a href="http://www.angelsandvagabonds.com/" target="_blank"><b>Angels & Vagabonds</b></a> Irish inspired tune, "<a href="http://angelsandvagabonds.bandcamp.com/track/queens-boulevard-serenade" target="_blank">Queens Boulevard Serenade</a>":<br /><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/mgZ1oPU-BeI" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe><br /><br />The story goes...in the lead up to our first St. Paddy's Day gig our band (<b><a href="https://angelsandvagabonds.bandcamp.com/" target="_blank">Angels & Vagabonds</a></b>) were working on some traditional Irish songs to play and our lead singer/keyboard player Don McNally realized they were basically all the same chords just re-arraigned.<br /><br />So the Irish American from Woodside, Queens, NYC dug into his past and crafted QBS. His main act <b>Delta Spirit</b> have broken up, reunited, recorded and toured off and on over the years but he has <a href="http://www.rockthebodyelectric.com/2016/12/album-review-matthew-logan-vasquez.html" target="_blank">steadily</a> released <a href="http://www.rockthebodyelectric.com/2017/04/album-review-matthew-logan-vasquez-does.html" target="_blank">solo</a> <a href="http://www.rockthebodyelectric.com/2019/02/album-review-mathew-logan-vasquez.html" target="_blank">offerings</a> in-<a href="http://www.rockthebodyelectric.com/2023/04/album-review-matthew-logan-vasquez-as.html" target="_blank">between</a>. Now he takes a second to 'reimagine' tunes from his Delta Spirit days in acoustic based, organic fashion on <i style="text-align: center;">Frank's Full Moon Saloon.</i></div><span><a name='more'></a></span><div><br /></div><div>The effort strips away Delta Spirits indie rock touches and tempos for a more roots rock interpretation. MLV has stated he was influenced by <i>Let It Be...Naked</i> and Taylor's Version recordings when it came to this project. It is a nice way to go back and revisit some songs that might not have gotten as much love when they were originally released. </div><div><br /></div><div>Delta Spirits first two albums get the bulk of this treatment as "Parade" and "Strange Vine" arrive from <i>Ode To Sunshine</i> and "Vivian", Salt In The Wound", and "Bushwick Blues" are from <i>History From Below</i>. "Parade" is the best revision of these, it plays as a slowed down <b>Beatles</b> sad song, which MLV sings winningly. He received some help from <b>Scott McMicken</b> on this track as the effort expands into trippy, swirling, psych-folk territory. "Strange Vine" feels like the original with some added flamenco spiced acoustic guitar while "Bushwick Blues" turns into a country lament and "Vivian" a harmonica intro'ed slow waltz, both highlighted by MLV's emotional vocals. </div><div><br /></div><div>If Vasquez felt the need to redo his vocals, his voice has only improved over the years, but it was fine to start as well. The idea to make these songs more fluid and less programmed pays dividends on opener "Yamaha" which moves as easy rolling folk rock with strums, tambourine, drums, and electro keys. The vocals may shine brightest on "Tear It Up" which is slowed down, moved along with twinkling guitar and spectacular singing. </div><div><br /></div><div>The only effort not from Delta Spirit's back catalog comes from MLV's side project <b>Middle Brother</b> with John J. McCauley III of <b>Deer Tick</b>, Taylor Goldsmith of <b>Dawes</b>. The song "Blue Eyes" has a twangy, <b>Neil Young-</b>like country vibe that isn't that much different than the original. Where Delta Spirit songs can certainly sometimes use some stripping down, this one is pretty solid in every form. </div><div><br /></div><div>A vanity project of sorts, yet a pleasant, low stakes one at that. Having these indie rock songs in roots rocks form is a nice way to revisit tracks from Matthew Logan Vasquez past while relaxing in <i style="text-align: center;">Frank's Full Moon Saloon.</i></div><div>____________</div><div>Support <a href="http://matthewwloganvasquez.com/" target="_blank">the artist</a>, buy <a href="https://matthewloganvasquez.bandcamp.com/album/franks-full-moon-saloon" target="_blank">the album</a>, peep some video below:</div><div><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/VBVN942xUhg?si=ARlOI0NE977B7iI2" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe><br /></div><div><div></div></div>Xeyedandpainlesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06664001703375540379noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3366901906249122079.post-24312858726396978322024-03-13T14:56:00.000-04:002024-03-13T14:56:00.334-04:00New Single from 4oreign Monae "Go Getta"Atlanta, GA based artist <b><a href="https://www.instagram.com/4oreign_most_wanted/" target="_blank">4oreign Monae</a></b> has a new single "Go Getta".<div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5VJO06ROl8DhhgxMJwdMvM3r5AuebSFsSAHQqLO79BZybANcoZYhD6FvU39Hn74Ktm7D4303RL0AXoTfsGa16r4oOObf1vTq-qbLkZr_oUBiXDECvqyhmDeOJAlZKus7EU-m6X60UznAWh4Gj5ky0PRNqN8Qo6aQvIHD4fn1i7Edo0bNu6L3VAIWwJHTr/s1400/unnamed%20(7).jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1400" data-original-width="1400" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5VJO06ROl8DhhgxMJwdMvM3r5AuebSFsSAHQqLO79BZybANcoZYhD6FvU39Hn74Ktm7D4303RL0AXoTfsGa16r4oOObf1vTq-qbLkZr_oUBiXDECvqyhmDeOJAlZKus7EU-m6X60UznAWh4Gj5ky0PRNqN8Qo6aQvIHD4fn1i7Edo0bNu6L3VAIWwJHTr/s320/unnamed%20(7).jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><div>Check out the track below:</div><div><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/xP_LXYxYNo8?si=m32uYnZm4z19rWU-" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe><br /></div></div>Xeyedandpainlesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06664001703375540379noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3366901906249122079.post-75870952068841601382024-03-13T10:16:00.006-04:002024-03-13T11:40:05.695-04:00Album Review: Kim Gordon - The CollectiveHey all, got a review up <a href="https://twitter.com/glidemag">@glidemag</a> which you can read <a href="https://glidemagazine.com/299791/kim-gordons-the-collective-rivals-that-of-sonic-youths-strongest-albums-album-review/" target="_blank">Right C'here</a>:<div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a0559276460_10.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="800" height="400" src="https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a0559276460_10.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div>It is of <b>Kim Gordon's</b> newest album <i>The Collective</i>. </div></div></div><div><br /></div><div><span style="color: #04ff00;">RtBE</span> are <a href="http://www.rockthebodyelectric.com/search/label/Sonic%20Youth" target="_blank">huge fans of Gordon</a> and respected more than enjoyed her proper solo debut in 2019's <i><a href="http://www.rockthebodyelectric.com/2019/10/album-review-kim-gordon-no-home-record.html" target="_blank">No Home Record</a></i>. </div><div><br /></div><div>This time around shit has gotten real. While we don't agree with the overhyped title of the review (which we didn't write) the album is top notch. We used the phrase "mental breakdown dance music" in the review and think that sums it up. Gordon herself has stated:</div><blockquote><i>“On this record, I wanted to express the absolute craziness I feel around me right now. This is a moment when nobody really knows what truth is, when facts don’t necessarily sway people, when everyone has their own side, creating a general sense of paranoia. Lesh knew it was a good thing and a real band as the Q <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/There_and_Back_Again_(Phil_Lesh_album)" target="_blank">recorded an album</a> and has reformed sporadically over the years. Now as Lesh amazingly celebrates his 84th birthday he brought them back together for two nights at the Capitol Theatre, in Port Chester, NY.</div><span><a name='more'></a></span><div><br />Wednesday was their second and very likely their final full show as a band. The Quintet decided to start in unique fashion as Phil led the group with an a cappella verse of "The Wheel" before dropping into their original "Night of 1000 Stars". The Q was linked up from the start as the song was fast moving and energetic, everyone got in on the act and smiles were flashed from bandmember to bandmember. </div><div><br /></div><div>The clear highlight of the first set was next as the band dropped into "New Speedway Boogie" a wide ranging effort that ran almost twenty minutes. The Q caught a groove and rode it, as Haynes' slide work and strong vocals were masterful within/without the blues vamp. The song morphed into a spacey breakdown which hinted at other roads to travel, but then returned to the groove, wrapping up the song winningly. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnrRaJPasupgyALic7ChF61IytFrAc-qeTJsy5_E1Vkh3Z5dM1JT3GlcjEzWea9niXocCh-nWB2zfGfOh3tO0RXewjOEictKFpoLTLP9FSSLohyEQbP4aJUYZwtVRn_u3WhN6jQ2NFYuStuZCB255WR5y8lBocSE557YrcGTFb6D29KQ6J8oj2Wtwwn_bP/s3000/IMG_3101.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2250" data-original-width="3000" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnrRaJPasupgyALic7ChF61IytFrAc-qeTJsy5_E1Vkh3Z5dM1JT3GlcjEzWea9niXocCh-nWB2zfGfOh3tO0RXewjOEictKFpoLTLP9FSSLohyEQbP4aJUYZwtVRn_u3WhN6jQ2NFYuStuZCB255WR5y8lBocSE557YrcGTFb6D29KQ6J8oj2Wtwwn_bP/s320/IMG_3101.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><div>Phil stepped up next and lead the Q into "New Potato Caboose" as he strongly sang and drove the team forward with his confident bass lines as the blissful and spacious jam floated out. At this point in the show it was super inspiring that an 84 year old was visibly nailing his craft so well. That changed a bit with "Birdsong" as the tune started off extremely pretty but ended with some confusion among Phil and Molo, far from a train wreck, just a reminder that these are actual humans up there doing their things which they haven't done in a few years. </div><div><br /></div><div>The Q locked back in for a set closing pairing of "China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider" which was engaging with Herring's flurries of dart like guitar lines, Barraco's bright keys and Warren's wah-wah work, closing a very enjoyable first set. </div><div><br /></div><div>After a long break (and a few Q huddles which were projected on the Theatre walls) the band returned and noodled a touch before delivering "Dear Mr. Fantasy" as Barroco's organ work along with Warren's passionate vocals/guitar highlighted a buoyant and expansive jam. The group delivered "Shakedown Street" with more of a cool groove than a blazing funk attack, but the chill vibe worked very well, getting the older, sold-out crowd dancing. </div><div><br /></div><div>Next came "Unbroken Chain" and unfortunately, Lesh was just not up to delivering this one on this night. It was amazing how much he sang before this effort, but this complicated original proved too much for him. He forgot full verses, where he was in the song, and had major issues with his in ear monitors. As the song wrapped up Phil said "Sorry about that" into the mic, yet the fans may have given him the biggest cheer of the night, all were super supportive. His age clearly showed here and I don't think one of those fans would have faulted him if that was the end of the night, however Phil was not going out like that.</div><div><br /></div><div>Instead, after a brief regrouping, he started nothing short of "Dark Star" singing the first line before moving to his chair mid jam to sit for the remainder of the set. The rest of the Q more than propped him up (even though Haynes was dealing with tech issues) as the band amped up their game delivering a top notch version of the legendary song with Herring in particular on fire, blazing away with power, then rolling back for nuanced fills. During the jam the band hinted at, then went full on into their version of <b>Traffic's </b>"Low Spark of High Heeled Boys". </div><div><br /></div><div>Haynes took over the vocals on the dynamite cover but it was Herring's amazing solo that again was a shining highpoint. The track drifted into a pumping "Passenger" keeping the energy high and dropping some "Dark Star" teases before bringing the meat of the second set to an exciting close. While most thought that was it, the band gave a sweet rendition of <b>Van Morrison's</b> "Into the Mystic" and then took a bow. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dyaH296sqkOrc8q31_rDdpmynD5lHQPQjWrBUpgcDt_TH40WWuegLL9cNDDWVDHQQFHsoc4AG1YESNvmBFz2w' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><div><br /></div><div>Unlike on Monday, Phil gave his donor rap before the encore. As the long show extended past midnight Phil discussed how important the crowd is here at the Cap as they allow the band to close that circuit, fully realizing the music. It was touching and the Q then brought it all full circle with a proper version of "The Wheel". </div><div><br /></div><div>Phil has a few more shows scheduled for his birthday week with a rotating cast of Friends and who knows what the future holds, but if this is the last time the famed Quintet play together, they went out on an emotional high note. </div><div><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/vghXjiiZxnU?si=nRFWUOQ_4EaEkz1O" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe><br /></div><div><br /></div>Xeyedandpainlesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06664001703375540379noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3366901906249122079.post-80804333802067957632024-03-11T10:06:00.020-04:002024-03-11T10:06:00.142-04:00Dylan Cover #622 Lia Havlena "Love Minus Zero/No Limit"<p><i>In this ongoing <a href="http://rockthebodyelectric.blogspot.com/search/label/Mondays">Monday</a> Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. It is an easy song to like, with it's sweet melody and one that gets deeper and deeper the more you contemplate the lyrics. Dylan uses some insane imagery to put true love into words with surreal phrasing that delivers the goods in a way that is tough to describe. In one sense, this is peak Dylan, moving with grace, describing things uniquely and just out of reach. <br /><br /><b>Cover</b>:<br /><div><b><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/B38r6eAdNZE?si=lhkbdA55w-F7BQ7q" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe><br /></b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div><b>Thoughts on Cover Artist</b>:<br />This is <span style="color: #04ff00;">RtBE's</span> first time hearing <b><a href="https://www.youtube.com/@liahavlena" target="_blank">Lia Havlena</a></b> who is a folk singer from Nebraska. <br /><br /><b>Thoughts on Cover</b>:</div></div><div>A pleasant straight ahead, live acoustic cover that showcases Havlena's vocals and strumming. Never over singing or playing, she just delivers the tune in easygoing fashion. For <i>Sahel</i> he partnered with producer David Wrench (<b>David Byrne</b>, <b>Frank Ocean</b>, <b>Caribou</b>, <b>The xx</b>) and the album was recorded at Studio HIBA in Casablanca, Morocco. While producers are always a factor in the music, Bombino seems to shift and move his sound with the producers, yet this time things feel well lived in and fluid, not the pop excursions one might expect from Wrench. </div><div><br /></div><div>The repetitive swirling with background synths, cool percussion and cutting guitar lines that kick things off on "Tazidert" followed by the acoustic guitar supported by a big bass groove and layered vocals on the following "Alwane"; this pairing is a signal as to what is to follow throughout <i>Sahel</i>. Bombino and company go back and forth between electric and acoustic with ease as the sounds shift and swirl in the desert sun and cool night air. </div><div><br /></div><div>Perhaps the highlight on a solid album is "Aitma" which is the most Western rock focused with great electric guitar tone to start from Bombino, huge rock drums and a raging Tuareg get down to close. "Si Chilan" possesses a great groove with spiraling guitar runs while the groove shifts to an acoustic vein with percussion and finger snaps on "Ayo Nigla".</div><div><br /></div><div>The swelling drums, vocal whoops and meaty riffs dominate the strong "Darfuq" while "Ayes Sachen" moves into an almost reggae like vibe. The swirling fretboard runs, bright clean playing dominate the head bobbing "Nik Sant Awanha" while two acoustic numbers wrap up the record, the cool grooving "Itisahid" and softly swaying folk tune "Mes Amis" which shows off excellent picking from Bombino. </div><div><br /></div><div>A rock solid album from top to bottom, <i>Sahel,</i> continues Bombino's strong run of powerful music. </div><div><br /></div><div>___________<br />Support <a href="http://www.bombinomusic.com/" target="_blank">the artist</a>, buy <a href="https://bombino.bandcamp.com/album/sahel" target="_blank">the album</a>, peep some video below:</div><div><br /></div><div><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/cSawdMjrPOE?si=n7cXqIXh-5wQGrvk" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe><br /></div><div><br /></div>Xeyedandpainlesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06664001703375540379noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3366901906249122079.post-77855978386542882052024-03-06T16:21:00.000-05:002024-03-06T16:21:00.138-05:00New Single from Lovelorn Dolls "A Heart Cries" The Belgium based, female-fronted dark goth metal pop duo <b><a href="https://lovelorndolls.info/" target="_blank">Lovelorn Dolls</a></b> release a new single "A Heart Cries" off of their upcoming album <i>Deadtime Stories</i>. <div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtNOLufAojeLu3PP5_TxfOAtAhd6R9QvSLXosB8Ay1-_GQ2_WkIaWAYNBXYBb-mNpkSvL8tRI-OZRZKoybaVrkwQ2LaJdZpAEyUNsYb7N5YaaDVnOvEH5dLq90vU6WfFPnaEJyOFc3cjwjxMv9TQmtEmRC_gdmiuxunvMnOl1Iimo9M6axAyyTlSR8NPKp/s425/unnamed%20(12).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="425" data-original-width="425" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtNOLufAojeLu3PP5_TxfOAtAhd6R9QvSLXosB8Ay1-_GQ2_WkIaWAYNBXYBb-mNpkSvL8tRI-OZRZKoybaVrkwQ2LaJdZpAEyUNsYb7N5YaaDVnOvEH5dLq90vU6WfFPnaEJyOFc3cjwjxMv9TQmtEmRC_gdmiuxunvMnOl1Iimo9M6axAyyTlSR8NPKp/s320/unnamed%20(12).jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Check out the track below:</div><div><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/JBQCEu5fdxM?si=wwAvc6CdCbUIF1Qy" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe><br /></div></div>Xeyedandpainlesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06664001703375540379noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3366901906249122079.post-69829192749320671462024-03-06T10:07:00.132-05:002024-03-06T10:55:21.760-05:00Album Review: Grateful Dead - Dave's Picks 49: Frost Amphitheater 1985<div style="text-align: center;"><b>Grateful Dead</b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i>Dave's Picks 49: 4/28 & 29/1985</i></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i>Frost Amphitheater Palo Alto, CA</i></div><div style="text-align: center;">** out of *****</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f1/Daves-Picks-Volume-49.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="314" data-original-width="318" height="314" src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f1/Daves-Picks-Volume-49.jpg" width="318" /></a></div><br /><div>Standard disclaimer: When reviewing the Dave's Picks series, and really any <b><a href="http://www.rockthebodyelectric.com/search/label/Grateful%20Dead" target="_blank">Grateful Dead</a></b> release at this point, it needs to be noted that a lot of the truly great shows from the band have already been professionally released. (If new to the band, check out <span style="color: #04ff00;">RtBE's</span> Beginners Guide to The Grateful Dead Part's <a href="http://www.rockthebodyelectric.com/2021/03/beginners-guide-to-grateful-dead-part.html" target="_blank">one</a> and <a href="http://www.rockthebodyelectric.com/2021/03/beginners-guide-to-grateful-dead-part_9.html" target="_blank">two</a>.) With their vast <a href="https://archive.org/details/GratefulDead" target="_blank">back catalog on archive.org</a> and all of their previous releases The band's selections are running thin when it comes to must own, professionally released shows.</div><div><br /></div><div>That said, this series still exists for a reason, obsessive fans (like <span style="color: #04ff00;">RtBE</span>) will always listen to anything from the band as Dave and his team continue to unearth rare gems.</div><span><a name='more'></a></span><div><br /></div><div>Unfortunately this isn't one of them. </div><div><br /></div><div>The two shows presented here (4/28 and 4/29) over four compact discs have minimal must hear moments and unless you are completely on the bus, this one can be completely skipped. </div><div><br /></div><div>1985 was an up and down year for the boys and you only need to hear Jerry's vocals for that to fully come crashing home. At the time of the presented shows, Garcia was about a year away from his diabetic coma that almost killed him and his vocals are shredded, destroying any nuance or texture. While the Dead were never known for pristine vocals, there is certainly magic to their singing and Jerry's ragged voice takes away from a lot of it during this phase of their career (84-86). </div><div><br /></div><div>The rest of the band, Bob Weir – guitar, vocals Brent Mydland – keyboards, vocals Phil Lesh – bass, vocals Bill Kreutzmann – drums Mickey Hart – drums, are in high spirits, maybe a bit too high, as things are super fast and moving throughout these two nights at The Frost, especially the first. </div><div><br /></div><div>The opening throwback to "Dancing In The Streets" is fairly well played, kicking off the night in interesting style, bleeding into "Bertha". Here is the first appearance of Jerry's cracking vocals that remind of Kermit the Frog at times on this night. The vocal effects are messed with as the echo is enhanced for Weir during "Little Red Rooster" which has too much slide guitar blistering forth. </div><div><br /></div><div>Perhaps the most all around solid first set offering is the lightly played "Brother Esau" which finds the band clicking. Garcia is straining during "Ramble on Rose" but Phil picks up the slack with a light hearted cover of "Just Like Tom Thumb Blues" as Lesh sings lead. The fast take on "Music Never Stopped" wraps up a forgettable first set. </div><div><br /></div><div>The second set gets going with a serviceable version of "Scarlett Begonias" that uses a slow build easing things open as Garcia and Phil lead the jam with guitar and bass weaving, getting better as the song progresses before it jumps into "Eyes of The World". These mid-80's versions of the song are a bit disorienting as the tune is played at warp speed, never truly synching up as the band is racing forward. </div><div><br /></div><div>The speed continues for "Going Down the Road Feeling Bad" as Jerry and Brent mix things up before a too fast version of "Man Smart, Woman Smarter" that is unique but not overall successful. After "Drums>Space" there is a super short version of "The Wheel" before "Truckin'" is upbeat as well, seamlessly moving into "The Other One" with the two drummers leading the charge. "Black Peter" finds Garcia's vocals still in brutal shape, but his solo and overall playing is excellent, while the band speeds through the final run of "Around and Around", "One More Saturday Night" and the encore of the best forgotten "Keep Your Day Job". </div><div><br /></div><div>For the opening set of 4/29 things aren't much improved, Garcia still sounds broken vocally an the band never truly connect. The set highlights are a funky version of "New Minglewood Blues" which has Weir and Mydland showboating with style, an OK "China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider" combo and the set highpoint, "Birdsong" which isn't amazing, but stands out as solid with very nice playing from Garcia. </div><div><br /></div><div>The second set of 4/29 is clearly the best part of this release. From the outset, the pumping "Hell In A Bucket" has Weir playing a raging front man in fun style while Garcia must have taken some tea or other medicine during the set break as his vocals have improved and he doesn't strain, gracefully delivering "Crazy Fingers" with understated beautiful fret work, smoothly moving into a stout version of "Playin' In The Band".</div><div><br /></div><div>The group is clicking throughout the jam before effortlessly going back to a ballad, this time "China Doll", which is a bit creaky, but the band goes back into "Playin'" for a bit before dropping off into "Drums > Space" only to reemerge with more "Playin'". The brief upbeat vibes drop back down for another Jerry ballad as "Wharf Rat" is good, leading to a big build that goes into "Throwing Stones" that has Weir going over the top with his vocals again before a good version of "Not Fade Away" ends the set. </div><div><br /></div><div>A good if understated run of songs, the second set is worth a listen, as is the encore of the very pretty "She Belongs To Me". It is almost as if during the second set, Garcia understood the songs he could sing and focused on those and his guitar, making for a smoother ride through tougher times. That is something the Grateful Dead always provide, even on their off days.</div><div><div></div></div><div>___________________</div><div>Support <a href="http://dead.net" target="_blank">the artist</a>, buy <a href="http://dead.net" target="_blank">the album</a>, and peep some video below (not Dave's Picks Audio):</div><div><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/lr3tPfgrNQA?si=5Otbsq8suK-kSyqF" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe><br /></div>Xeyedandpainlesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06664001703375540379noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3366901906249122079.post-34844689910893657672024-03-05T16:32:00.000-05:002024-03-05T16:32:00.140-05:00New Single/Video from Love Sex Machine "BODY PROBE"Lille-based noise-rock stalwarts <b><a href="https://www.promojukebox.com/mlgdel/?e=VEZtZEF0T2w5aXZTNTRUZkoxWUorT1lCV0o0dXNGdU40L2M2a2VTbFhnVT0%3D&c=41301507&p=QKLHGPB3PZAPNBFU&checkcode=9af615ec2fb92dec&urlcc=0fd6e95d39f36b1c&acc=MGo1OS9xMi9QQStVYmo4d09INUlGTEp5aWhZRENGV1U0bFRUdWR4SHRMSE1IUG1DeXBiRkMrTjA4V2hlQ2kvTg%3D%3D" target="_blank">Love Sex Machine</a> </b>have a new single/video out "BODY PROBE"<div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTn6nnpmfB9ni9qdlfvW6B076VnIeggRA3Bgx1bVAR4CRb_W1G3fO6OylHFGqK3ewiEMo8NZ5SAEA5HH9lL8H5_V87gUlQaSzDhjkwrkkCu9CRjddX-rYpS_dXmRDEHZOQKt3QzLiZXO0iE4Li4SJ4plPBARpklDGnNb5HBoUZsU88eNSkPpPt2-QFOCY7/s800/1709033764.4288949966.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="448" data-original-width="800" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTn6nnpmfB9ni9qdlfvW6B076VnIeggRA3Bgx1bVAR4CRb_W1G3fO6OylHFGqK3ewiEMo8NZ5SAEA5HH9lL8H5_V87gUlQaSzDhjkwrkkCu9CRjddX-rYpS_dXmRDEHZOQKt3QzLiZXO0iE4Li4SJ4plPBARpklDGnNb5HBoUZsU88eNSkPpPt2-QFOCY7/s320/1709033764.4288949966.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><div>Check out the noise rock track and video below:</div><div><b><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/fu4Rz-Ov5fw?si=YCJHeawR7zdBDLjt" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe><br /></b></div></div>Xeyedandpainlesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06664001703375540379noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3366901906249122079.post-49190235601872080352024-03-05T10:49:00.019-05:002024-03-05T10:49:00.125-05:00Album Review: Ministry - HOPIUMFORTHEMASSESHey all, got a review up <a href="https://twitter.com/glidemag">@glidemag</a> which you can read <a href="https://glidemagazine.com/299705/ministry-adds-another-dark-fast-chapter-with-hopiumforthemasses-album-review/" target="_blank">Right C'here</a>:<div><br /><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a2648137382_10.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="800" height="400" src="https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a2648137382_10.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div>It is of <b>Ministry's</b> newest effort, <i>HOPIUMFORTHEMASSES</i>.</div></div></div><div><br /></div><div>A clear step up from <i><a href="http://www.rockthebodyelectric.com/2018/04/album-review-ministry-amerikkkant.html" target="_blank">AmeriKKKant</a></i>, and a pretty solid Ministry record for 2024. </div><div><br /></div><div>Support <a href="https://ministryband.com/tour" target="_blank">the artist</a>, buy <a href="https://ministryband.bandcamp.com/album/hopiumforthemasses" target="_blank">the album</a>, read <a href="https://glidemagazine.com/299705/ministry-adds-another-dark-fast-chapter-with-hopiumforthemasses-album-review/" target="_blank">the review</a> and peep some video below:</div><div><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/7T7TThGcrAY?si=YFZmnYdPzV8PuyGf" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe><br /></div><div><br /></div>Xeyedandpainlesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06664001703375540379noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3366901906249122079.post-77121755090373640272024-03-04T10:09:00.023-05:002024-03-04T10:09:00.152-05:00Dylan Cover #621 Lisa Bastoni "Workingman's Blues #2" <i>In this ongoing<a href="http://www.rockthebodyelectric.com/search/label/Mondays"> Monday</a> Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. The ease with which the piano and song flows out reminds of Dylan's best work, as if the song has always been there and he is just breathing it into existence at this time and place. It owes a debt to Merle Haggard, the Civil War, poet Henry Timrod and thousands of others, but is perfectly Dylan when it comes to the lyrics which bounce all over. A folk song, mistitled a blues song, for the workingman that feels aloof, pure Dylan</div><div><br /></div><div>I may have been a bit down on the music of <i>Modern Times</i> in <a href="https://glidemagazine.com/3528/bob-dylan-2/" target="_blank">my original review</a> (I have softened my stance a bit), but I was right about "Workingman's Blues #2", it stands with the greatest songs he has ever produced. </div><div><br /><b>Cover</b>:</div><div><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/9JuPLo6DeyE?si=HToNyAW3ocJ7SXaz" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe><br /><div><br /><b>Thoughts on Cover Artist</b>:<br /><span style="color: #04ff00;">RtBE </span><span>is new to <a href="http://www.lisabastoni.com/" target="_blank">Lisa Bastoni</a> who is a Massachusetts based singer songwriter. </span><br /><br /><b>Thoughts on Cover</b>:</div></div><div>This is a fantastic cover of a lesser played Dylan song. The show has long been a bootleg for fans, but this recording has been remastered, there are still some sound issues, things can sound a bit compressed, but overall it is in pretty solid sonic shape. </div><div><br /></div><div>The ripping trio to kick open the show of classics "Statesboro Blues", "Done Somebody Wrong" and "Ain't Wastin' Time No More", are high all high energy and show case Betts lead guitar playing matched with Oakley's incredible bass which acts as a second lead instrument in this incarnation of the group. Oakley's loud bass pummels "Done Somebody Wrong" and is the clear early star of the show while Betts slide masterfully works the original "Ain't Wastin' Time No More" with such confidence, sliding directly into "One Way Out".</div><div><br /></div><div>On "One Way Out" Allman's keys and the drums take center stage, while the drums would continue to fire all night, Gregg's keys and singing is the only part of this show that doesn't soar to astounding heights. The slow blues groove of "Stormy Monday" is fine, but versions (such as <i>At Fillmore East</i>) clearly stand above it, the same might not be able to be said for "You Don't Love Me" though. </div><div><br /></div><div>The clear highpoint of the album and a must hear live tune is this version of "You Don't Love Me" as it cooks. The keys and drums get the groove going to start, a bit more upbeat than usual as the tune moves forward, then stops at about five an half minutes before Betts unleashes a monstrous solo that then pushes the band into huge, dramatic playing for five more minutes, followed by a skittering, southern fried hoedown with drums and Dickey speaking a unique language as the group feels like they could going on forever. </div><div><br /></div><div>The cool chill out of start of "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" (with thick bass from Oakley) is a nice exhale from the band but it gains in tempo as it progresses before a quick spin through the classic "Midnight Rider" which acts as a touch of a breather before the Brothers dip back into the maelstrom with another extended outing, this time via "Whipping Post". The tune moves in the same neighborhood as the "You Don't Love Me" jam did, big, dramatic crescendos, with powerful drumming and soaring slide, before an almost glam rock like ending that closed the set of tunes.</div><div><br /></div><div>The band felt like they were onto something and delivered the crowd some more of that swaggering rock via the instrumental excursion titled "Syracuse Jam", which started the encore, before dipping into the fluid organ and riff laced show closer "Hot 'Lanta". </div><div><br /></div><div>This hot night of tunes showcased the band minus Duane, but still with Oakley, who would die from a motorcycle cycle injury as well, just about six months after this show. That is perhaps what makes this process so magical.<br /><br />In music, songwriting specifically, phonetics or stream of consciousness words that come out might lead to an idea that becomes transcendental. Sometimes, I find my subconscious knowing what I really think and feel before I do. Just like in Jonathan Haidt’s theory of the elephant and the rider where the elephant is our subconscious and the rider our consciousness, (the logic with which we retroactively justify the elephant’s behavior) I too find ways to justify my brain’s phonetics or random word choices as ideas that may have existed in my subconscious.<br /><br />Finding what fits my gibberish is a process of imagination. That’s how I came up with ‘Terminal Woes’. If a melody comes into existence with a certain sequence of vowels, I have a sense that it must live there. When I came onto the phrase ‘Terminal Woes,’ it spoke to me and sparked all these ideas around what it entailed. It spoke to my fears of the future in this planet, to my rage against corporate greed, to my love for nature and to my fear for an entire future generation/the thought of having children.<br /><br /><br />“who’ll dance at the break of dawn, when the heat’s begun, when our mother’s gone?<br /><br />last chance! every living thing, every breathing being, everything that’s green<br /><br />it’s not just a human’s world, just a human’s world just a human’s world<br /><br />we’ve got to reverse this flight for our future child, for continued life”<br /><br />Nico had produced the marching like beat and once we had the verse and “terminal woes” phrase we knew there was an idea worth developing. In a thrift store, I’d picked up a record of Ravi Shankar playing his Concerto for Sitar and Orchestra alongside the London Symphony Orchestra. It played on repeat and I think some of it’s spirit seeped into the vocal melodies on this song (and some guitars in other songs on the record.)</i></blockquote><p>Check out "Terminal Woes"</p><p><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/LKqNkHZKz70?si=xsvAo2ZTuuQez9Rn" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe><br /></p></div>Xeyedandpainlesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06664001703375540379noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3366901906249122079.post-78849504202166527362024-02-27T10:15:00.019-05:002024-02-27T10:15:00.170-05:00Album Review: Mary Timony - Untame the TigerHey all, got a review up <a href="https://twitter.com/glidemag">@glidemag</a> which you can read <a href="https://glidemagazine.com/299277/mary-timony-mixes-the-freak-folk-formula-on-untame-the-tiger-album-review/" target="_blank">Right C'here</a>:<div><br /><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a1407693128_65" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="700" data-original-width="700" height="400" src="https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a1407693128_65" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div>It is of <b>Mary Timony's</b> <i>Untame the Tiger</i>.</div></div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><span style="color: #04ff00;">RtBE</span> have dug Timony for a while, <a href="http://www.rockthebodyelectric.com/2019/12/top-50-albums-of-2010s.html" target="_blank">loving <b>Ex Hex</b></a> and <b>Wild Flag</b>. </div><div><br /></div><div>Support <a href="https://www.instagram.com/marytimony/?hl=en" target="_blank">the artist</a>, buy <a href="https://www.mergerecords.com/artist/mary_timony" target="_blank">the album</a>, read <a href="https://glidemagazine.com/299277/mary-timony-mixes-the-freak-folk-formula-on-untame-the-tiger-album-review/" target="_blank">the review</a>, peep some videos below:</div><div><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/bDtnl2USZVY?si=eOk0QOgl9_emwOdH" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe><br /></div>Xeyedandpainlesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06664001703375540379noreply@blogger.com0
