Album Review: Prism Shores - Out From Underneath

Prism Shores
Out From Underneath
*** out of *****

The Montreal based Prism Shores deliver their dreamy, warm, indie-pop on their newest full length offering, Out From Underneath. The languid riffs and easy flowing tunes drip out over these ten contemplative offerings.

Their second full length from Prism Shores (Jack MacKenzie - guitars, bass, vocals, synths, Ben Goss - bass, guitars, vocals, synths, Luke Pound - drums, percussion, drum programming, guitars, vocals, Finn Dalbeth - guitars, vocals) finds them comfortable in their soft shoegaze style that lightly messes with standard indie rock structures, but never gets too heavy or experimental.

The opener "Over Played My Hand" sets the tone as the light gaze and jangle pop mixes in restrained/weepy fashion. The band used the phrase 'ennui'  when describing their lyrics, and that term fits the music as well. The hazy/dreamy "Holding Pattern" follows while "Tourniquet" layers up the fuzzy/bright guitars with a nice solo buried under the blurred offerings.

Prism Shores can get twinkling or breathy, like on the acoustic accented "Killing Frost" or can be echoing and ringing such as on "Fault Line". The band plays in these established fields and find success when they get a touch heavier (especially with bass and drums) such as on the propulsive, low end driven through feedback "Weightless" and the spacey, yet grounded by killer drums "Sudden Sting".

Two of the best efforts are when the band expand their sound by bringing in some friends, such as on the easy grooving "Southpaw" which invites KT Laine onboard for a nice duet, while Owen Fairbairn's violin is a nice addition to the soaring "Drawing Conclusions", which is the largest sounding effort here.

Prism Shores mix of indie/shoegaze on Out From Underneath is a pleasant, dreamy stroll through some soft rock with fuzzy edges.
