There is going to be a lot of psychedelics ingested when the just announced Flaming Lips and Lennon Claypool Delirium tour hits your city.

These proud freaks are hitting the road and will be altering minds in every which way. RtBE recently reviewed the newest LCD record and enjoyed it, we have the new Flaming Lips disk coming in July as well ready for review, will get to it soon.

Album Review: The Claypool Lennon Delirium - South of Reality

On the debut record from The Claypool Lennon Delirium the duo locked in and crafted some exciting space rock as their different styles slowly formed a fully functioning record. Their follow-up is more of the same weirdness as the duo push and pull each other into the unknown.

The album is book ended with tunes whose lyrical focuses are one the destruction of our planet while the musical sound is rooted in galaxies far away. Opening with "Little Fishes" the track actually reminds of another Claypool project, Oysterhead as chimes and rumblings mix over Claypool's lyrics about mercury poisoning our soft minds. Closer "Like Fleas" puts a different spin on things treating humanity as fleas on the back of the dog of Mother Earth; she will just shake us off when we become too annoying.

The briefly titled "Blood and Rockets: Movement I/Saga of Jack Parsons/Movement II/Too the Moon" focuses more on Sean Lennon's outer space fuzz floating style with his melodic vocals narrating what could be an episode of "Tripped Out History" before descending to the more earth bound rumblings of Claypool's bass on the title track. 

The two main members of the outfit have always had their own distinct style and the album moves from one to the other but these collaborators work best when the styles meld on a single effort. The gorgeous "Amethyst Realm" may be the best of the bunch as Lennon's sonic warbling and Claypools stout bass work meld into hypnotic flowing rhythms. "Boriska" also hits high notes while Lennon sings a lot like his father telling the tale of a Russian boy born on Mars while the bass gorgeously moves the proceedings before a cinematic finale complete with layers of strings.

Quirky oddballs clearly inspire this duo (Jack Parsons, Boriska) but when Claypool resorts to his old man/get off my lawn ways on "Easily Charmed By Fools", the dull "Toady Man's Hour" or the rambling side effects warning which closes out "Cricket Chronicles Revisited: Pt. 1, Ask Your Doctor/Pt. 2, Psyde Effects", the results aren't as charming.

Both artists have their own careers but the follow up to Monolith of Phobos, South of Reality solidifies the duo as a band that needs to be watched/listened/freaked out to no matter where they travel as the sum is more than the individual parts for the majority of the record. Here is hoping more cosmic journeys are on the horizon from the searching pair of musicians.

Album Review: The Claypool Lennon Delirium- Monolith of Phobos

Hey all, got a new review up @glidemag which you can read Right C'here!!!

It is the first release from The Claypool Lennon Delirium, which is a combination of Les Claypool and Sean Lennon. This review works wonderfully with our Full Show Fridays this month, but in all honesty RtBE hasn't been that impressed with most of the recent Claypool backed projects (one example).  

This release is different, it has a focus, even if that is space-odd-prog rock, and Sean is a great match for Les especially vocally and on the drumming front. It is a solid disk that grew the more we listened to it, so support the duo, check out the review and peep some video below:

Album Review - Gorillaz - The Mountain

On the ninth studio effort from the Gorillaz (the partnership between the musician Damon Albarn and the artist Jamie Hewlett) the themes of loss, India's artistic culture and remembrance flow throughout the cohesive album. The Mountain is large and high, bloated, but a heartfelt tribute to past friends and family members, making for a long, cathartic ride.   

Year in Review 2016- Top 10 Albums Part 1 (The Just Misses & Let Downs)

Another great year is finishing up for @RockBodElec and we wouldn't be a proper music site if we didn't end the year with a "Best Of" list, so RtBE Presents the Best of 2016 Top Ten Albums: The Just Misses & Let Downs:

In the instance that RtBE has reviewed the album either on the site or somewhere else we will link to that review and just give a quick summation, just click on the name and title and you can read it. RtBE worked with the Glide Team to give input on the their Top 20 so expect some overlap.

Again the focus here is on full albums, not singles, but full releases you can slap on and listen all the way through. We know these are a dying breed, but it still is the way we consume music, no shuffle or singles for us.

Today we are going to focus on the "Just Misses" of our top 10 and unfortunately the "Let Downs" released this year. Obviously these are just our personal preferences, feel free to voice your opinion in the comments. Expect installment 2 (#10-6) soon, but for now click on the jump:

Album Review: Primus - Conspiranoid EP

These days Primus is just one outlet for the freaky frontman/bass maestro Les Claypool as he has everything from Bastard Jazz to wine making to Oysterhead going on, but the brief new EP Conspiranoid is some of the strongest music this trio has put out in some time. It maintains the bands heavier roots while incorporating their fearless leaders more spaced out vibes, which have always been coursing through this groups collective veins. 

The opening song, "Conspiranoia" is the longest studio song of Primus' career and it is a winning mix of old school sounds from the band with the tripped out Pink Floyd and prog influences Claypool normally deploys on his Claypool Lennon Delirium outings. Lyrically Les is dealing with modern day conspiracy theories and those who blindly or willingly follow them. Musically the trio deploy deep thumps/freaky bass runs and Larry LaLonde flights of sonic fancy on guitar. The jam which starts around six minutes in is prime Primus as the explosive trio navigate these psychedelia tinged waters before breaking it back down to the heavy groove motif.   

The ending goes on long with samples of flat earthers, COVID myths and other lies prominent in society these days as the band begrudgingly chunks along. That vibe of idiocy is continued in the following "Follow The Fool" but the aggression is amped with Tim "Herb" Alexanders percussion hitting hard around Claypool's sticky bass lines latching on to ear cannels. 

The short EP closes with an oddly funky "Erin on the Side of Caution", delivering freaky guitar work from LaLonde, around a thundering low end laid down by Herb and Les, slamming to life two minutes in and delivering those classic Primus sounds with a new engaging twist. 

The only regret from this release is that there isn't more of it as Les, Ler and Herb seem to be back in the groove that made them one of the most interesting bands while they were at their peak a few decades ago. Hopefully Primus have some more in the tank ready to go in the near future as the Conspiranoid EP is a strong dose.

Voodoo Fest Headliners: Arcade Fire, Tool, The Weekend

RtBE used to love looking forward to Voodoo Fest as much as JazzFest. Times they are a changing though as we are no longer really into the Voodoo Experience, or at least not nearly as much as Jazzfest but with the recent announcement of headliners we thought we would take a look at whose playing.

The three headliners who we already mentioned Arcade Fire, Tool and The Weekend, honestly don't do much/anything for us, which is fine. NOLA festivals always seem to be better when you don't care about the headliner. So here are some deeper bands we would check out if we head down (Still up in the air at his point).

Band of Horses 
We mentioned this last week, but we are excited for one of favorite bands to come back onto the scene after a few years of silence. Here they are playing live on Letterman from a few years ago.


The Claypool Lennon Delirium
We reviewed them recently and this would be fun, but this leads us to think Les will be sitting in during a lot of late night gigs around town which would probably be even better than this set at the fest.

We loved them a few months ago live and really dig their new album obviously this would be a set to catch. Here they are live:
