Live Streams: Dumpstaphunk Live at Tipitina's

We are now heading into the new normal with live music. Live shows will need to be flexible and streaming is a great way to keep music going. Streams have become essential for live music junkies like RtBE.  We will highlight various shows/streams/virtual events for your viewing/listening pleasure. You can check out our weekly Full Show Friday series for concerts from the past and as always, please support the artists any which way you can.

Live Stream: Dumpstaphunk Live at Tipitina's

Tonight check out nugs.net for Dumpstaphunks show live at Tipitina's. We just highlighted their new single earlier this week and we are pretty sure they will rock it tonight.

To get in the mood, here is some live tunes from the band:

Full Show Friday: Taylor Swift - Speak Now Tour Live

We search the murky back waters of youtube to find full concerts and post them to the site weekly, come back every seven days to help us celebrate Full Show Friday's. These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...This week...Taylor Swift!

Each January RtBE does a Jazz showcase and judging by the clicks, people just aren't as into it as we are. To make up for that, in February we go pop during our Full Show Friday series to blatantly attract page views.

Can't do a pop focused Full Show Friday focus and leave out the reigning queen. Here is Taylor Swift from 2011. Enjoy.

*** out of *****
Standard disclaimer: When reviewing any Grateful Dead release at this point, it needs to be noted that a lot of the truly great shows from the band have already been professionally released. (If you are new to the band, check out RtBE's Beginners Guide to The Grateful Dead Part's one and two.) With their vast back catalog on archive.org and all of their previous releases, the band's selections are running thin when it comes to must own, professionally released concerts.

That said, the band still release shows because rabid fans (RtBE included) will listen to everything they put out. So let's dive in...

Two guitar maestros got together to deliver an homage to the blues as JD Simo & Luther Dickinson join forces for the first time on Do The Rump! While the title and packaging may suggest a 50's sock-hop soundtrack with gimmicky dance steps, the debut album from this duo is nothing but deep hill country blues.

Dylan Cover #670 Isaac Hayes "Lay Lady Lay"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a cover by Isaac Hayes playing "Lay Lady Lay"

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we addressed a cover of this tune:
Excellent track and the first time the world heard Dylan's new singing style, which would only last for Nashville Skyline. This song is the standout track from this album, it is a classic and so simple, yet sweet and timeless. One of Dylan's best tracks, this phase was the the closest to "country" he ever got and "Lay Lady Lay" is an overall fantastic piece of music.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
Hayes became known through pop culture as the Chef on South Park, but RtBE enjoyed his music long before that. Black Moses is a hell of a record.

Thoughts on Cover:
Hayes turns on the sex appeal for this one. Breathy vocals, soulful groove, warm organ, Skinamax soprano sax, it is all there as he pleads with his love to stick around. A bit over the top, a bit desperate, but still interesting.

Live Review: Jack White - Live at Brooklyn Paramount 2/12/25

Jack White
Live at Brooklyn Paramount 2/12/25

Having caught Jack White at the intimate Irving Plaza just two days before, his Wednesday night, sold-out show at the gorgeous Brooklyn Paramount had a lot to live up to. With the way Jack and the band is currently playing though, that shouldn't have even been a worry as the group surpassed Monday's concert and let it all hang out for this gig.

Dylan Cover #669 Jerry Garcia Band "Simple Twist of Fate" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune comes from the Jerry Garcia Band and is a live cover of "Simple Twist of Fate

Thoughts On Original:
From the first time we talked about a cover version of this song:
Well the classics just keep coming in this series, now here is "Simple Twist of Fate" what a gem of a song.  Impeccable lyrics, gorgeous phrasing, just a great great song that is hard not to enjoy even if people are not fans of Dylan.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
RtBE's are huge fans of Mr. Garcia, but not always huge fans of his solo Jerry Garcia Band outings...which....can...get....very....slow...some...times.

Thoughts on Cover:
There is no doubt that this version is super slow/sleepy and while in the past we would probably skip it, there is no denying the beauty in Garcia taking his time with this one. Today it works for us, other days it hasn't, but if you are in the mood for a relaxed, majestic Dylan cover, cue it up.

Dylan Cover #668 Howard Tate "Girl Of The North Country"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's artists, Howard Tate covering "Girl From the North Country".

Thoughts on Dylan's Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover version of this song:
A fun little number that connects Dylan with folk's past. I heard Simon and Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair" first when I was growing up so I have always been a bit more partial to that version of this old folk tune even though Dylan changed a bunch of stuff around (obviously) with his recording that appeared on The Freewheeling Bob Dylan. His duet with Johnny Cash that highlights Nashville Skyline is something else entirely, a major sonic effort that I love. On an album that saw so many massive tunes come flowing out of the bard this one can be overshadowed yet his first version of this track is just a sweet folk ditty that has aged very, very well.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
RtBE stumbled upon Tate in 2024 and love his sound/style. For those who are unaware (like we were until recently) Howard Tate was a soul singer who inspired the greats (Janis Joplin, BB King etc) and you should check him out.

Thoughts on Cover:
Simply put, this is the reason we still do this series. We are #668 covers in and this just may be our favorite we have come across. Perfection.

Happy 45th Anniversary to Ramones End of the Century

Today marks the 45th anniversary of the release of the Ramones End of the Century album.

While it is probably no one's favorite Ramones album, it still is a fun listen. You could win punk rock trivia by knowing that this album was the highest charting Ramones record. It was also the end of a perfect four album run (Ramones through Road to Ruin) and unfortunately was the beginning of more spotty albums from the band, but it still is an OK record.

Album Review: Iggy Pop - Live at Montreux Jazz Festival 2023

Hey all, got a new review up @glidemag which you can read Right C'Here!!!

It is of Iggy Pop's new live album, Live at Montreux Jazz Festival 2023. RtBE is super impressed with this album, didn't know the 75 year old had it in him, or toured with a band this solid/inventive.

Dylan Cover #667 Matt Borrello "John Brown" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by Matt Borrello playing "John Brown"

Thoughts on Original:
An absolutely crushing anti-war song, that is a monster from Dylan and should be more well known. While "Masters of War" breaks down the war machine, "John Brown" addresses the human toll expertly. Musically it takes from the folk tradition, as lots of Dylan's early tunes do, but lyrically it expands upon the topics of patriotism, passion, and pain. A chilling tale of hurt and the cost of war, "John Brown" is an all-time great Dylan tune, an artistic protest song.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
This is the first time RtBE has heard of Matt Borrello.

Thoughts on Cover:
An excellent live cover of the powerful song...in today's political climate it couldn't be more on point. Which is sad.
