Silver Synthetic
8/14/25 Union Pool Brooklyn, NY
It has been four years since the New Orleans, LA based outfit Silver Synthetic played NYC and on a hot summer night in August they returned to the same venue as four years ago, Union Pool in Brooklyn. Over that time the band has evolved, and the receptive crowd on Thursday night supported the group's return.
The biggest change with the group is the addition of two instruments, swelling from a quartet to a sextet as keyboards and pedal steel guitar now have been added to the party. Those live show additions go lockstep with Silver Synthetic's shift in sound on their two records.
On their excellent debut the group dug into Velvet Underground like tone, with other classic rock touchpoints filtering in. With their follow-up, Rosalie, the group switched record labels (from Third Man to Curation) and seem much more inspired by a 'Cosmic Canyon' sound, incorporating country twang and less urban rock.
The group opened with "Unchain Your Heart" and delivered it in a cool T-Rex meets Gram Parsons fashion. After that opener, the country rock got moving in languid fashion for the rest of the night, focusing on the new album with "Rosalie" and "Age of Infamy". Both showcased Chris Lyons' tight, breathy singing style while the full group had a clear CSNY feel to it as the piano playing and harmonies rang out wonderfully.
Silver Synthetic has toned down Kunal Prakash's lead guitar riffing, but the full band delivered some excellent spacey jamming to start the highlight of the set, "Yr Gonna Be Happy". The group dynamics and interplay were fluid, and the tune had a bit more energy as the band stretched out but still nailed it. "Red Light" had some echoing keyboard work while "Right Time" featured a cool Prakash solo to wrap up.
The weepy pedal steel gave a bit more twang to "Back Home" before Silver Synthetic performed a revved-up cover of Neil Young's "Don't Cry No Tears" which fit them perfectly as the band brought a bit of Crazy Horse stomp and edge to the tune. The short set ended with "Only Time" which was a relaxing exhale to wrap things up.
This was the first show on the Silver Synthetic's Northeast tour and they seemed in great form throughout their almost hour set in Williamsburg. Here's hoping they come back to the Big Apple soon as the group seems to be on top of their game no matter where their sound leads them.
