The metal gods are doing it proper with Metallica Mondays as they, (like Phishon Tuesdays) go into their archive and show past concerts at 8pm EST on their Youtube Channel.

This month we have a special focus on artists who will be playing the 2020 Jazzfest in New Orleans. Today we highlight The Honey Island Swamp Band who play, Thursday April 23rd.
Unfortunately due to the outbreak of Covid19, Jazzfest has been rescheduled for October (no official date as of yet). Hopefully all of the scheduled acts are healthy and will be performing then, but since we crafted these posts before the outbreak, RtBE will still post them this month and will regroup/revisit things in the fall when (hopefully) things return to semi-normal.

This powerful call of hell-fire and brimstone rained down from the mountaintop as Dylan proclaimed his faith proudly, and this was the first song that most of the public heard confirming the fact that Bob did indeed "Go Jesus". It is point and fact with its belief and message. You gotta serve somebody... can't be simpler then that when it comes to faith can it? The original has a driving beat and a propulsion to it that sounds urgent, but not as urgent as Bob sings, reinforcing the proclamation through his powerful lyrics and leaving no man or woman on the sidelines...he brings everyone into this spiritual battle, and whatever your beliefs it is impossible not to feel Bob is committed as he runs through the verses and chorus.

We've been doing Jazzfest for 11 years straight now and been going to New Orleans longer than that, but have yet to catch Honey Island Swamp Band. Hopefully that changes this year as they are a solid band right in RtBE's wheelhouse.

A funky, bluesy take on the classic/best tune from Dylan's "Gospel" era. The extra vamping while Hart gets his guitar ready adds to the hypnotic groove and then the players really dig into it. A great way to kick off the month of Dylan covers heading into Jazzfest as this one typifies the jamming spirit of New Orleans, the musicianship, the great sit-ins and the soul...all taking place on Tipitina's stage. Here's hoping we catch a few tunes just as good in just under a month in October.

In these trying times, how we support musicians may not be on the top of everyone's list, but that doesn't mean it isn't critical. The strength and support music gives us all, especially during stressful moments can not be overstated.
Sites like Bandcamp continue to do fundraisers and you should support all of your favorite artists, especially the smaller ones, any which way you can. If you can buy some merch, some vinyl, or whatever, so what you can so these artists can continue to create the music we all love.

A fantastic singer/songwriter from Nashville, Becky is going live today at 2pm Central. RtBE first came across Becky on Jeopardy of all places, then fell in love her most recent release Undesirable. Every April we have a special showcase for bands who are playing this years Jazzfest in NOLA. Today we will focus on Big Sam's Funky Nation who will be playing Saturday May 2nd on the Congo Square Stage.

Last year Big Sam's Funky Nation was one of the highlights of Jazzfest for RtBE, so we wanted to start this month of Full Show Friday's focusing on artists playing the festival in 2020 with them. This show is from 2018 from Jazz Saint Javier and it shows off the Nation's funky style and killer showmanship from Big Sam himself.
The Nation are dynamite and we can't wait to catch them funking up the fairgrounds on Saturday May 2nd. Pro-shot, pro-sound, Enjoy:

Every day at 4:20 CST Brendan Benson presents his 'Boy In A Bubble' series. He delivers a live song, smokes some herb and chats with his fans. It is a very personal and super cool series that he is running as he interacts with a lot of the comments and questions as well as doing a live tune and chatting about his time in isolation.
Benson also has a new album coming out very soon which we will be reviewing for Glide. Here is our favorite entry in this series so far, the music starts about 6:30 in if you want to skip to that.
It is of Thundercat's newest release It Is What It Is.
We reviewed his last album, Drunk, for Glide as well giving it nine stars....this one is better. While not up to his amazing live show, which topped our list last year, it is still a great mix of whimsy, seriousness and overall cool sounds.
The album is a winner and should propel Stephen Bruner even higher. Support the artist, buy the album and peep some video below:
The Reggaeton/Latin Trap star Bad Bunny's newest album is a loose relaxed record as YHLQMDLG finds the artist on top of his game and the genre.
This release is a mix of stripped down simplistic moody numbers and full on over the top produced dance floor fillers. It opens on more barren front as ""Si Veo a Tu Mama" takes a Casio keyboard version of "The Girl From Ipanema" and little else to set the mood, but things kick up as the instrumentation and vibe increases on tracks like "Pera Ya No" which uses vinyl sampling, twinkling pianos and distorted vocals and "La Santa" which increases the energy around a fun beat and a guest spot from Daddy Yankee.
The yin/yang in energy and more sullen tracks continues as "Solia" uses grooving percussion, "La Zona" is a banging dance track and "Bichiyal" digs deep with the bass bumps while welcoming Yaviah for vocals; all are sweaty numbers. The more inner looking efforts like "Vete", "Ignorantes", "Puesto Per Guerrial" and "25/8" all flirt with minimalist modern hip hop/trap style, but manage to retain the bass, just not the upbeat energy.
The genre and Bad Bunny work best when he is layering sounds on top of samples on top of 808's, basically the more the merrier as the energy and sound drive the best efforts here like "Saferfa". The standout tune uses hip hop samples, thick/thin beats, digital distortion while moving through a variety of styles with the help of Jowell & Randy and Ñengo Flow.
The tune is a mashup of genres this is what Bad Bunny does best, "A Tu Merced" amps up the reggae vibe around huge beats, "P FKN R" uses horror movie soundtrack sounding beats (with Kendo Kaponi and Arcángel) and "Esta Cabron Ser Yo" (with Anuel AA) both manages to increase the gangster flow and the flamenco guitar quotients on the record. "Hablamos Manana" is a catchy hook with supporting rhymes from Duki and Pablo Chill-E as producers Tainy and Albert Hype overload the groove with laser blast as Bad Bunny brings the record to a close.
While there isn't a mega cross over hit here, the quality level remains high throughout as the full album moves with a swagger and confidence progressing through Bad Bunny's filter. The Puerto Rican star will only rise higher on the back of YHLQMDLG.
