Album Review: Sick Thoughts - Another Piece of Plastic

Sick Thoughts
Another Piece of Plastic
*** out of *****

The newest release from the prolific Sick Thoughts (aka Drew Owen) is a loud, rattling rock an droll mini-album/EP titled offhandedly Another Piece of Plastic. The Baltimore raised, New Orleans based artist keeps pumping out ripping rock with gusto.

Owen plays all of the instruments recorded the album and mixed it with additional mixing and production from Dan Duvall. Owen has been at this solo recording/self-production for a long time now and his scuffed up sound is certainly the desired effect of the lo-fi garage rock.

Opener "Me and My Guitar" cuts right to it with fiery riffs as Owen mixes Chuck Berry like rock with a punk ethos. "19977" gets fuzzy and rumbling and delivers a breakdown around a bit of a Misfits sound while siren like guitars and a motoring bassline work well on the title track that feels inspired by The Buzzcocks

The most hardcore brutal slamming occurs on "Just Die Fast" as the rage and aggression busts out from under the surface with slamming ferocity. The epic (by Sick Thoughts standards) closer "The Doom" runs four and half minutes, starting with understated indie rock before shifting to heavy metal with sludge bass and huge riffs that soar.

The short Another Piece of Plastic is a strong capturing of Sick Thoughts lo-fi, high energy, fuzzed up rock and roll.
