Album Review: Who Pays - The Final Meal

Who Pays
The Final Meal
**and1/2 out of *****

You can probably surmise it form the album art, but the no frills, direct, hardcore punk outfit Who Pays from Brooklyn, NY debut release, The Final Meal, is a raw slice of aggressive tunes that rattles and shakes throughout the short run time.

The eight songs delivered here by the four piece outfit (Kirk: vocals Troi: drums Hogan: bass Mike: guitar) are all blazing with pumped up energy and get directly to the point. The group uses lo-fi production that can cause everything to swirl into one blob of sound, but that is part of the overall aesthetic.

The quartet are explosively aggressive right from the start as "Nuclear Church" blasts out of the gates with blinding power. The band pushes out more groove based hardcore with drill-like guitars on "Life" which contains the repeated phrase "Life is the only thing worth killing for".

The rumbling drums highlight "Human Grade Kibble" while "Dybbuk" is slamming. The band is straight ahead about the old saying on the pummeling "Death and Taxes" but get outright cataclysmic for the brief hand grenade that is "John McCain".

"Pale Black" combines the bands touch of groove with their more straight head thrashing while album closer "The Final Meal in Boseman" has a screeching intro, then delivers a classic NYHC track. No trickery and nothing fancy here, The Final Meal is just a throwback old school NYHC album from Brooklyn newcomers Who Pays.
