Album Review: Freak Slug - Loose Tooth and a Short Skirt

Freak Slug
Loose Tooth and a Short Skirt
*** out of *****

The Manchester, England based indie-pop artist Freak Slug followed up her debut I Blow Out Big Candles with this quick EP, Loose Tooth and a Short Skirt.

Freak Slug, aka Xenya Genovese, uses an odd mix of sonics verging in-between rock, pop and electro as she squeals and bounces through these five short tunes. The style is reminiscent to Blondshell, with less of a 90's grunge influence and more of a modern sound.

Opening with the most spastic effort, "Honest Man" travels a lot of ground in under three minutes. This is ADHD pop music with swirling synths, handclaps, lush string breaks and more. "Miss June" is less adventurous, the most straight-ahead tune here, and also the best, as the strumming guitars, bass and 'ooh-aah' vocals deliver some hip shaking indie rock that is custom made for late night dive bar dancing. A catchy as all hell tune that works well in classic fashion

That sense of dance floor rhythms continues on "Blue Eyes" which is dominated by bass/drum but has layers of distorted guitars and synths working overtime. Genovese's disenchanted vocals during this tune match the futuristic sounds well. On "My Only Friend" she goes with higher singing, using effects or more immediacy while the music turns languid and spacey.

Closer "Does It Matter" is the feeling of the edibles kicking in as the tune is dragging, using deep muted bass as the syrupy sounds ooze out. A cool mix of quirky music and singing, the brief EP, Loose Tooth and a Short Skirt, keeps Freak Slug on the radar as an artist to monitor.
