There are so many Parliament-Funkadelic albums that is hard to pick a crowning moment, but this is the album that The Library of Congress added to the National Recording Registry in 2011. That says something about it's lasting influence as it was the first time the classic core of P-Funk (George Clinton, Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrell) teamed up with horn legends Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley.
The players come together for Afrofuturism outer space adventure as the opening "P. Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up)" becomes an instant classic as Clinton raps and the band rolls. The greasy bumping funk and sweet horns are present for the whole album as the costumed oddness, lyrical weirdness and musicality was a watershed.
"Mothership Connection (Star Child)" was born here in the outer reaches of funk while "Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)"anchors the 2nd side. Swing down and climb aboard...because we got a real type of thing going down today.
For the 50th Anniversary of Mothership Connection, play it loud. Here are some tunes to get you started:
