Back in 2019, RtBE did a series called The Masters and Miles Davis was a part of it.
While looking back at his vast studio discography, RtBE ranked Jack Johnson second, only behind Bitches Brew. This is what we said about it then and it still holds true 55 years later:
Two songs, just over fifty minutes and pure audio bliss. The funk rock fusion peak for Miles is this soundtrack record as Jack Johnson's life story touched Davis deeply. He was moved and then put together an amazing group of players to move us. Again producer Macero needs credit for his work editing and combining sessions, but the finished product is a gloriously grooving sense of adventure. Put it on and enjoy.
That group of players, Miles Davis – trumpet Steve Grossman – soprano saxophone John McLaughlin – electric guitar Herbie Hancock – organ Michael Henderson – electric bass Billy Cobham – drums Brock Peters – narration as well as Bennie Maupin – bass clarinet John McLaughlin – electric guitar Sonny Sharrock – electric guitar Chick Corea – electric piano Dave Holland – electric bass Jack DeJohnette – drums who appear on of "Yesternow" (from 14:00 to 23:55) playing a composition called "Willie Nelson", are some of the best to ever do it.
This is an excellent album and one that seems to grow stronger as time goes on.
On it's 55th birthday give it a spin:
