Album Review: GA-20 - Orphans Volume 2

GA-20
Orphans Volume 2
**and1/2 out of *****

Last month we reviewed GA-20's first installment of Orphans, eight cover songs of blues and soul. Now comes Orphans Volume 2, four more blues and soul covers from the rocking act. The timing of the release is odd as it arrives only two months after the original, and is incredibly brief, containing only four songs, which had been recorded sometime ago. Whatever the logistical reason for separating the two EP's, the music on both is stout.

The trio, guitarist Matt Stubbs, singer/guitarist Cody Nilsen and Josh Kiggans on drums, continue to deliver raw supped up covers with a bit more of focus on the soul side of things as Nilsen's voice lends to some sweeter sounds.

Up first is a revved up cover of Elmore James "Stranger Blues" that has ringing guitar from Stubbs, strong vocals from Nilsen, but it is Kiggans drumming that really pushes things on as his deep tom's and kicks rumble while cymbals shimmer. The track feels like it could roll on forever as it fades out with the trio still cooking.

The group turns to a smoother soul vibe with Nilsen taking center stage on "I Love You, I Need You", while things kick back up with sawdust on the floor, roadhouse vibes of the blues classic "Cryin' & Pleadin'".

The short EP ends with another dip into the bombastic soul as "I Don't Mind" has big swells, dramatic guitar lines, solid percussion, but once again it is Nilsen who steals the show. His vocals sound straight out of the late 60's Stax era with soothing charm and grace.

The extremely brief Orphans 2 (under fifteen minutes total play time) splits between blues and soul as GA-20 continue their retro love.
