Album Review: Pardoner - Paranoid In Hell

Pardoner
Paranoid In Hell EP
**and1/2 out of *****

The newest EP from the San Francisco based Pardoner is a combination of their love for catchy ear worm tunes combined with rough raw punk, as Paranoid In Hell covers quite a bit of ground in under 10 minutes.

Opening with the folksy/dance ready post punk of "Future of Music" the quartet of Max - Guitar/Vox, River - Drums, Colin - Bass, Trey - Guitar/Vox, use nihilistic lyrics and droll singing about not caring about art around grooving rock that uses scratchy guitars to claw at the edges.

Much heavier is the screeching, slamming "Distant Star" which uses wailing/clanging guitars and pounding drums with raw aggression and a mid song breakdown while "Over The Moon" goes back to catchy with indie rock flair as more nihilistic lyrics arrive about living the shallow life in NYC over some pumping riffs and rich rhythmic work.

The brief EP ends back on the harder side of the ledger with "Instrument of Peace" that is heavy slamming and raw vocals, wrapping up with an underwater sounding guitar solo and crashing drums closing the track.

Paranoid In Hell is a good sampler of Pardoner's influences as the group cut loose, display keen interests, wry lyrics and talent throughout the brief EP.
