Originally, the debut album from Preservation Brass, a subset of the famous Preservation Hall Jazz Band, was not meant as a tribute, but when the New Orleans bass drumming legend Kerry “Fat Man” Hunter was killed in an automobile accident on Mardi Gras Day 2024, the tone shifted.

Back in March of 2020, just before the world shutdown for Covid, The Brothers got together to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the legendary Macon, GA outfit The Allman Brothers. That show was a success by all indications, but due to a host of issues it was a one time thing. Five years later they decided to run it back as past Allman members Jaimoe, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Oteil Burbridge, Chuck Leavell and Marc Quinones brought on board Joe Russo, Reese Wynans and Isaac Eady to round out the sound for two shows at Madison Square Garden.

 In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a cover by Kenny Wayne Shepherd  playing "Ballad of a Thin Man'"

All April (and the first week of May) RtBE focuses our Monday Dylan Cover Series on artists who are playing this years New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Today is Kenny Wayne Shepherd who is playing the festival Saturday May 3rd.

Thoughts On Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this tune:
Surprisingly we have not touched upon a cover of this track yet in the series, possibly because it has never been anywhere close to a favorite of ours. This tune seems to be a clear product of Dylan's time and space, hounded by media/fans/everyone and lashing out in a burnt out manner. Not containing his best lines or playing it has never really grabbed hold, except a few times in the live setting.

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
The Louisiana native Kenny Wayne Sheherd has been on the scene since he could strum, playing electric blues all over the country. We actually saw him live waaaay back in the day on one of his first tours and liked his style but never really jumped on board. There is no doubting though that he can play that guitar. 

Thoughts on Cover:

A stout cover that bangs and drives forward and also allows Shepherd to rip a meaty blues solo right in the middle and again to close. A good cover, with blazing guitar from Shepard on a tune that is not an easy one to make your own.

From noon to three today there will be a free live stream of the annual Good Friday Blues @ St. Marks Church In-The-Bowery. 

Described as a dramatic Good Friday experience with Blues and Jazz music, Preachers: Pádraig Ó Tuama, Nell Gibson, the Rev. Nontombi Naomi Tutu will lead. There will be music, drama and dance.

From the first time we tackled a cover of this tune:
Almost a forgotten throw away track from Bob, which proves how great he really is, this peach of a song originally appeared on New Morning. The famous La-la-la's are so unlike Bob it instantly stands out as unique in his back catalog. "The Man In Me" is playful, loving, sincere yet deceptive. It took on an added life after showing up in the cult classic The Big Lebowski and now has a whole new generation digging its quirky sounds.

A straight-ahead acoustic live cover with nice backing vocals, that finds Jim James' voice soaring. Pleasant way to start the week.

It is of Craig Finn's newest release, Always Been. 

RtBE are long-time fans of Finn. This solo album finds him working with The War on Drugs' Adam Granduciel. While it isn't a perfect pairing, there are some successes found on the record, and a few glaring misses. In the end, this is a Craig Finn solo album and by now people should be well aware of what they are in for.

Thoughts on Original:

Some of the enduring magic of The Basement Tapes is the ease with which everything rolls out. It may have been work for Bob and The Band, but it sure sounds like a good damn time. "Please, Mrs. Henry" epitomizes that feeling, as Dylan could be just as drunk as the song's needy main character who is begging for some help all over. Tossed off in the best possible ways, the tune bumps and wobbles forward, again like the main character, or Dylan himself.

RtBE has always been a fan of the hits from Cheap Trick but have never done a deeper dive past Cheap Trick at Budokan.

Thoughts on Cover:

This cover is insane...in a good way. Cheap Trick take a deep cut of Bob Dylan's for a wild ride at the Whisky-A-Go-Go, Los Angeles, CA - June 1977, flashing over the top Who like power, guitar nods to the Kinks and much more over the ten minute jam. This is without a doubt one of the wildest Dylan covers we have ever featured in this series and we dig it. A killer cover to kick off this month with our focus on artists playing this years Jazzfest.  

Happy 10th Anniversary to Bop English - Constant Bop

Today we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Bop English's, Constant Bop. 

The only record (that RtBE knows of) released by White Denim frontman James Petralli under this alter ego and now that White Denim is basically a solo project, it is doubtful anymore Bop English albums show up!  RtBE loves this album, rating it as our favorite of 2015 and it made our list of the favorites of the past decade.

On a calm spring night in New York City, The Hard Quartet pulled into their hometown supporting their excellent debut, self-titled release. Opening the night were Loosey and Sharp Pins, who unfortunately RtBE missed, however the headliners had the house mostly filled when they took the stage around 10pm.
