After seven years away, the Melbourne Australia based rock outfit Eddy Current Suppression Ring released their surprise comeback, fifth full length, In Light Of Recent Events. The eleven twitchy rockers bounce and shake with raw intimacy.
The quartet of Daniel Young, Michael Young, Brendan Huntley, and Brad Barry deliver a mix of styles that floats between post-punk, proto-punk and garage rock as they use a sparse backing behind mostly deadpan vocals. "Self Sabotage" lives up to its name with ringing guitars and lackadaisical singing while "Bop" is more urgent with motoring drums and riffs, feeling like a 50's rock fever dream.
"Turtle" is an album highlight as gorgeous riffs build to a drawn out climax that works well while "Ulterior Motives" drops in a host of changes in almost prog rock fashion during its short run time. The drums and bass push forward on the pounding "Ivory Tower" which grows as it it circles serpentine fashion, "Hard To Move" is a raw garage rocker in the vein of Oblivians and "Swimming Hole" is a catchy upbeat bouncer that causes hips to swing involuntary.
Things turn more ominous on the downtrodden plodder "Empathetic" which never gets anywhere, while the frantic beats and riffs of "My World" kicks up its heels, rocking out with abandon. The album closes with a pair of extended offerings as ECSR use repetitive riffs on the less successful "On My Way Home" which feels stuck at times, while closer "Past and Future" does a better job delivering their clanging raw vibes as riffs and drums pound in heavy fashion leading to an explosive finale.
Things are stripped down to their essence throughout Eddy Current Suppression Ring's comeback record In Light Of Recent Events as the band deliver an unpolished, honest, rock experience.
