Sazerwrap 2025

In years past we have delivered a Sazerwrap to catalog our personal New Orleans Jazzfest experience, so we will continue this year.

We have reviewed some of the shows we caught already and it should be stated: Jazzfest in New Orleans is RtBE's absolute favorite time of the year.

Live Review: Tedeschi Trucks Band with Buddy Guy - Beacon Theater NYC 5/22/25

Tedeschi Trucks Band with Buddy Guy
Beacon Theater NYC 5/22/25

On an unseasonably cool and rainy May evening, Tedsechi Trucks Band continued their six-night residency at the Beacon Theater on the upper west side of Manhattan. Making this fourth night of the run extra special was that it was the last to have the legendary Buddy Guy and his band opening the show.

Album Review: Jeffery Broussard & The Nighttime Syndicate - Bayou Moonlight

Jeffery Broussard & The Nighttime Syndicate
Bayou Moonlight
**** out *****

On the opening song, titled "Whatever", off the debut full length Bayou Moonlight from Jeffery Broussard & The Nighttime Syndicate, Broussard sings the phrase "Sit back relax and pour yourself a cup of coffee or whatever, and listen to the great great sounds of zydeco...or whatever". That final 'whatever' is doing a lot of heavy lifting as the outfit have combined to craft an intoxicating mix of blues, soul, Jamaican ska, jazz, swing, gospel, and zydeco, that simply cooks.

Happy 20th Anniversary to Sleater-Kinney's The Woods

On this day 20 years Sleater-Kinney released The Woods, an amazing album of ripping rock and roll.

This was the last album the band would release before a ten year hiatus when the excellent No Cities To Love emerged (which made our list of best albums of the 2010's). The Woods just may be RtBE's favorite SK album, so let's look back at it...

Happy 84th Birthday Bob Dylan!

No one has ever been better. Happy 84th birthday Robert Allen Zimmerman aka Bob Dylan.

Enjoy a few of his best songs:

Album Review: Deafheaven - Lonely People With Power

Deafheaven
Lonely People With Power
**** out of *****

Deafheaven's modus operandi is to combine the pretty/raw via their mixing of death metal influenced power and wandering shoegaze beauty; how much you like any of their records probably says more about where you fall along that blackgaze spectrum than the band itself. The San Francisco, CA based outfit continue this alchemy on their newest album, Lonely People With Power, their first for the Roadrunner label, and to RtBE's ears, it is some of the best music they have produced as a band.

The NYC based WYLDLIFE have a new tune out, "Dizzy".

Album Review: Total Con - Who Needs The Peace Corp?

Total Con
Who Needs The Peace Corp?
***and1/2 out of *****

This kick in the teeth album from the Leeds UK based punk/hardcore outfit Total Con is a furious unleashing of aggression as Who Needs The Peace Corp? harkens back to the stripped down early sounds of the genres. Even before the music charges out, the album cover from Karim Newble, gives that retro punk/hardcore visual feel, matching the tunes contained within.

Happy 10th Anniversary to Angels & Vagabonds Anyways...

RtBE not only writes about music, but also creates some.  Angels & Vagabonds (mostly) acoustic EP titled Anyways... turns ten years old.

It is exciting to go from critic/reviewer of music, to creator of tunes. Special thanks goes out to friends and bandmates who helped with this one. While it has been quite a few years since a release from the group, more music is actually on the way...

Album Review: Jason Isbell - Foxes in the Snow

Jason Isbell
Foxes in the Snow
**** out of *****

For his most recent effort, Foxes in the Snow, the singer/songwriter Jason Isbell stripped down to as basic as it comes. Isbell set up shop at Electric Lady Studios with just an all-mahogany 1940 Martin 0-17 acoustic guitar and his impressive vocals. Working with producer Gena Johnson over the span of just five days, Isbell's open, raw and hypnotic tunes are enchanting.

Album Review: Ale Hop & Titi Bakorta - Mapambazuko

Ale Hop & Titi Bakorta
Mapambazuko
**** out of *****

The partnership between Ale Hop (Peruvian electronic musician and researcher Alejandra Cárdena) and Congolese guitarist Titi Bakorta is a very interesting mix of cultures, sounds and styles as the music bounces, shakes and shimmies down a new path of Peruvian/African rhythms. Mapambazuko is a wild ride and one very much worth taking.
