Album Review: TVO - Fall In A Pit

TVO
Fall In A Pit EP
**and1/2 out of *****

The newest brief three song EP from the Philadelphia, PA based freaky punk rockers TVO is a blast of cathartic energy. Clocking in at just over five minutes the three songs on Fall In A Pit clang and bang with raucous vitality as they deliver the noisy goods.

Opener "(Sha Na Na) It Ain't Gonna Be Alright" sets the tone with a mix of sloppy and tight as the group slams razor sharp guitars and blaring saxophone lines together around a pounding low end. The speedy drums and bass of "Crisco Cops" propel the band forward before the closing title track pushes feedback and groovy punk into overdrive until the band devolves into free-punk noise to close.

The playing is upbeat rowdy and set to careen off the rails at any given moment; vital elements to successful punk rock with this slathering of noise on top. Now a few EP's deep into their career TVO are blaring into the void with reckless abandon and primal passion.

RIP Lee "Scratch" Perry

Lee "Scratch" Perry passed away at the age of 85

Perry was a giant in the world of music, having worked with everyone in the Jamaican reggae and dub scenes, while influencing far beyond his countries borders. He was wholly unique and marched to his own funky drummer, we will not see his like again.

We reviewed Panic In Babylon for Glide back in the day and respected him as an artist and innovator. The best way to celebrate his life is listen to his art. Enjoy:

Dylan Cover #494 Yahav "Love Minus Zero / No Limit" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune comes from Yahav and is a live cover of "Love Minus Zero/No Limit".

Thought's on Original:
A personal gateway song, the first Dylan love offering that truly spoke to me was "Love Minus Zero/No Limit". It is an easy song to like, with it's sweet melody and one that gets deeper and deeper the more you contemplate the lyrics. Dylan uses some insane imagery to put true love into words with surreal phrasing that delivers the goods in a way that is tough to describe. In one sense, this is peak Dylan, moving with grace, describing things uniquely and just out of reach.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
This is the first time RtBE has heard Yahav who has posted a few acoustic covers to youtube

Thoughts on Cover:
A straight ahead cover that directly delivers the song. Nice work.

Album Review: Jon Batiste - WE ARE

Jon Batiste
WE ARE
**** out of *****

Jon Batiste is an artist who never stops. From leading the band nightly on The Late Show with Stephan Colbert, to playing for social change, to winning Academy Awards with his music for the animated movie Soul, to releasing excellent jazz with one of RtBE's favorite live albums of the decade, Chronology of a Dream. His newest effort WE ARE tries to combine his many sides, talents, inspirations and interests into a thirty eight minute eclectic offering, and the ambitious project blows open the doors on what to expect from Batiste as a solo artist, proving his musical desires know no bounds.

Singing falsetto on the title track the slight neo-soul/funk begins the album bringing in various phases of black music to the forefront, ending with his alma matter with Augustine High School Marching 100. While currently based in New York City, New Orleans is his true spiritual home and the cities past, present and future flows through these tracks.

The gospel/second line feel of "I Need You" gets the funky beats kicking as the southern hip hop flows out during "Boy Hood" (with fellow New Orleanian's Trombone Shorty and PJ Morton), a homage to town before the lone jazz piano solo offering "Movement 11" recalling the piano greats of the cities past such as Ellis MarsalisJames Booker and Allan Toussaint. "Show Me The Way" name checks his direct influences on this album with everyone from Ella Fitzgerald to the Wu Tag Clan to the Rolling Stones to Nina Simone getting air time while directly affecting the songs.

Batiste shows off his impressive MC chops with "Whatchutalkinbout" rhyming around jazzy hip hop with supreme confidence. Lyrically Batiste keeps it direct, accessible and overly simple; spouting out variations on all you need is love while getting up, dancing it off and singing out loud. These aren't new thoughts or phrases and Batiste will grow as a lyricist, but during these volatile times the basics are always needed to be reiterated.

The tunes the jump out the most are when Batiste channels his biggest influence for this record, Stevie Wonder. The slinky Prince-like funk with NOLA horns of "Adulthood", the get down second line feel good jam "Freedom" and direct horn laden goodness of "Tell The Truth" all have Wonder as a direct influence, but Batiste is not quite there yet. These tracks also brought to mind the first solo offerings of Cee-Lo Greene when he broke out of the Goodie M.O.B. and had the whole musical landscape to choose from, huge success followed, and Batiste is well ahead of him on that on that road.

WE ARE manages to cover a fantastic sonic scope, connecting modern day music to it's roots and it is a clear break through for Batiste as he moves into more pop accentuated pastures. He will surely continue to craft various songs in various styles for various projects with love and joyful passion.

RIP Charlie Watts

RIP to Charlie Watts. The legendary drummer was 80

He was famously the backbone of the Rolling Stones, and one cool cat. RtBE were lucky enough to see him play with the band a few times and we wrote about him when we covered the Stones in our Masters Series so we won't say much more here.

It is a rough year for drummers, well, it is a rough year for everyone. Let's remember Mr.Watts in the best way, by listening to his songs.

Album Review: Shannon & The Clams - Year of the Spider

Hey all, got a new review up @glidemag which you can read Right C'here!!

It is of Shannon & the Clams newest release, Year of the Spider.

Again working with producer Dan Auerbach, the Oakland, CA quartet crafted a doozy.

While personally RtBE rates their previous release Onion a bit higher (it made our top fifty of the decade), this one is on the same level as the band is clearly in a groove.

Dylan Cover #493 Pete Stark "Most Likely You Go Your Way And I'll Go Mine"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's artists, Pete Stark doing a cover of "Most Likely You Go Your Way And I'll Go Mine"

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this song:
It's that thin, that wild mercury sound. It's metallic and bright gold, with whatever that conjures up. Those are the phrases that Dylan himself used to describe the sound that he wanted on Blonde on Blonde. Safe to say he got it and perhaps never more so than on "Most Likely You Go Your Way And I'll Go Mine". That whirling organ that sounds like it may actually take flight, the tempo, the cutting lyric, hot damn this song is a joy. RtBE actually got to see him open a show way back with this one and it was a hoot, not as good as the original, but a gem to see live and hear anytime.
The closest I ever got to the sound I hear in my mind was on individual bands in the Blonde on Blonde album. It's that thin, that wild mercury sound. It's metallic and bright gold, with whatever that conjures up.
Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
Never heard of Pete Stark before, but he is an Australian rocker.

Thoughts on Cover:
A pretty solid, upbeat rock version of the great Dylan tune from the rock and roller with an unfortunate guitar.

Happy 20th Anniversary to Robert Randolph & the Family Band - Live at Wetlands

On this date, 20 years ago, Robert Randolph & the Family Band played their final show at Wetlands in Tribeca, downtown Manhattan and recorded it for a live record which would be released the following year, simply titled Live at Wetlands.

I was in attendance at this show and it was a barn burner. A bit of personal history before diving into this...

Album Review: Taqbir - Victory Belongs To Those Who Fight For A Right Cause

Taqbir
Victory Belongs To Those Who Fight For A Right Cause
*** out of *****

Taqbir is a punk band from Morocco who are raging against the oppressive religious society on their debut offering Victory Belongs To Those Who Fight For A Right Cause. The band is secretive about their identity because of their outspoken stances in a repressive culture.

Singing in Moroccan Arabic the outfit is fed up with the religious based, extreme patriarchal oppressive society in which they have to live. This is true punk rock as their dangerous stance could have disastrous consequences; they are playing the music for radical change.

This would not matter as much if the tunes themselves weren't as effective as they are in their raw punk style. Opener "Sma3" uses feedback and a pumped up bass line in almost industrial fashion to kick-start the short EP. The marching drums and ringing guitar propel "Aisha Qandisha" forward with power and purpose, while closer "Al-Zuki Akbar" drives everything home with groove based hardcore punk rock.

"Tfou 3lik" is the short EP's centerpiece extending almost to three minutes. It starts with a spoken word declaration before increasing the speed, focusing on screeching verses, chant along choruses slamming riffs and big breaks that inspire. A dynamite offering as the band ravages and rumbles with passion and a fierceness.

Taqbir's Victory Belongs To Those Who Fight For A Right Cause is a reminder of the visceral power of music, the feeling that honest punk rock screeds can literally change the world.

NOLA Jazz Fest Canceled, Help Support Musicians

Once again Covid-19 has canceled the United States best festival, October will no longer be a unique New Orleans Jazzfest experience.

With this cancellation the musicians are no longer getting paid for the very many gigs they would have been playing around the two festival weekends. To help out the musicians the Krewe of Red Beans is gathering donations, paying musicians and throwing small shows in New Orleans to try to offset some of the hardships.

This is a great cause, They are calling it "Fest Fest" and hopefully you can donate if possible. This is a valiant effort to try to brighten the spirits of that town which is getting crushed by the Delta variant. Here are the the Hot 8 Brass Band covering Joy Division:

Dylan Cover #492 The Black Sorrows "Silvio"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune comes from The Black Sorrows and is a cover of "Silvio

Thoughts on Dylan Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this jam:
One of the bright spots on the stinker Down in The Groove, and I have always felt that this had a lot to do with Robert Hunter helping Bobby out on this one.  Co-written by Hunter with Jerry GarciaBrent Mydland and Bobby Weir helping out on the studio recording this track feels very mid-career Grateful Dead.  It got even more so live, picking up the rollicking pace and sticking with Bob for the rest of his career, something none of the other Groove tracks managed to do.  I have always loved "Silvio" because of the Dead connection and because I caught a ripping version of it at my first, and still to this day, favorite Dylan show...
Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
This is the first time RtBE has come across The Black Sorrows. They are an Australian rock band who have done very well for themselves and have been around for a while, will have to check them out more.

Thoughts on Cover:
A very solid version that cooks. Love the added pianos and organs touches at the end as a cool touch.

Album Review: Movie Club - Fangtooth EP

Movie Club
Fangtooth EP
***and1/2 out of *****

The newest release from the Venice Beach, CA based Movie Club is an engaging instrumental EP, mixing action and bleakness. Fangtooth captures the dissonance, confusion and anger of the recent year plus with sonic paintings of emotions that run the gamut.

The duo, Jessamyn Violet (drums) and Vince Cuneo (guitar) expanded on this go around (their fifth studio offering) to include horns from Ozomatli's David Ralicke who pitched in on everything from flute, baritone and tenor saxophone (all supped up with effects) and Tim Lefebvre contributing on bass to round out the sound.

The ominous "Badlands" opens the EP and pours out as an adventure/horror cocktail; it is as if Spy Hunter morphed into a slasher video game at some point along the open road. The questioning "Underwater Highway" is shaky before the blaring of distorted horns and guitars slam home, while "Trap Door" displays a warbling that recalls the peppiest moments from Sonic Youth

"Ghost In The Machine" is the centerpiece of this release, stretching over four minutes it uses a slow building motif which creeps forward becoming brighter and nuanced as it moves towards its dynamic finale."Slinky Fish" excitingly wraps up things on a high note with its dance groove and a beautifully weaving sax solo from Ralicke.

The brief Fangtooth is a winner as each track sets the instrumental scene. Movie Club allow the listener to fill in the emotional blanks while giving them a push in a certain rocking direction.
