Live Review: CBGB Festival - 9/27/25 Under The K Bridge Brooklyn, NY

CBGB Festival
9/27/25 Under The K Bridge Brooklyn, NY

"A screeching display of total aggression".

Those are the only notes I took during the day long CBGB Festival on Saturday September 27th Under the K Bridge in Brooklyn, NY. That lack of notes prove what a good time the festival was.

Happy 40th Anniversary Tom Waits Rain Dogs

Today marks the 40th anniversary of the release of Tom Waits best album, Rain Dogs.

A wide ranging set from the troubadour/found sound musician. To RtBE, this is album Waits' crowning achievement.

Live Review: Gorilla Biscuits, Shutdown, Orange 9 MM and More 9/26/25 Racket NYC

Gorilla Biscuits, Shutdown, Orange 9 MM and More
9/26/25  Racket  NYC

The official CBGB Festival pre-party went down on Friday night 9/26/25 on the westside of Manhattan just a few hours before the main event got underway in Brooklyn. No Iggy Pop sightings happened at Racket, but a host of NYHC legends and young punks slammed and shouted along with some great heavy music.

Dylan Cover #700 Dolly Parton "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a cover by Dolly Parton playing "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right"

Thought's on Original:
This song is so iconic and flat out awesome, even people who dislike Dylan have to enjoy this tune right? Biting and yet not bitter, a toss off of the grandest proportions, "Don' Think Twice, It's All Right" is epic and yet so straight forwardly simple. It easily ranks as one of the bard's best works, truly a classic and has been covered by so many people in so many ways.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
RtBE love Dolly and have written about her before. She is an American treasure.

Thoughts on Cover:
The incomparable Parton sings gloriously (as always) on this cover as th musical backing is straight ahead folksy Americana with a dash of country with a full band for support. Her backing vocals are delightful as well as Parton switches genders and a few lyrics before a huge ending that finds her soaring vocally to close, a great, upbeat cover that takes away some of the originals pathos and replaces it with Parton's irrepressible joy.

Unreal that I have been doing this for so long...RtBE has highlighted 700 covers of Bob Dylan songs and it still feels like I haven't even scratched the surface...Dylan is amazing, and you are amazing for reading this and listening to any of them.

Album Review: Evan Oberla - Canal Street Revolution

Evan Oberla
Canal Street Revolution
***and1/2 out of *****

The newest solo release from trombonist, singer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, composer, and Flow Tribe member Evan Oberla is titled Canal Street Revolution. The ambitious double album is "based on historical recountings of the 1960s Civil Rights protests in New Orleans on Canal Street". Oberla uses these sounds and feelings, as well as a host of New Orleans musicians, to launch his wide ranging, modern jazz leaning, project.

Album Review: Buddy Guy - Ain't Done With the Blues

Buddy Guy
Ain't Done With the Blues
**** out of *****

As the title suggests, the 89 year old legend Buddy Guy has more blues to give on his fine new album Ain't Done With the Blues. Guy sounds strong on both guitar and vocals as he hooks up with a host of friends, but this is not a duet album, Guy commands the stage.

Album Review: Sick Thoughts - Another Piece of Plastic

Sick Thoughts
Another Piece of Plastic

The newest release from the prolific Sick Thoughts (aka Drew Owen) is a loud, rattling rock an droll mini-album/EP titled offhandedly Another Piece of Plastic. The Baltimore raised, New Orleans based artist keeps pumping out ripping rock with gusto.

Dylan Cover #699 Waterhouse & Windsong "Highway 61 Revisited" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by Waterhouse & Windsong playing "Highway 61 Revisited"

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this tune:
A great blues rock number that has a touch of silly from Bob with the "Siren Whistle". The original version of this tune found on the album of the same name strikes me as a bit of a put on, Bob obviously loves the historic feel and the bizarre middle American heritage but the lyrics and whistle soften the blow. The track gets increasingly better in the live versions where Dylan's backers can rev up the honky-tonk and boogie down south as the group did for us up in Saratoga back in 2000. Tony Garnier the bass player for the group lead things on a thumping rollick in the encore and the band all hopped on board as Dylan sang about God/Abraham. It was the last rocker the group played that night putting fourth a ton of 6-string energy. (They would go on to finish with the crowd singing along to "Blowing in the Wind").

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
This is our first time hearing Waterhouse & Windsong. Some info from the video:
Ted Waterhouse and Debra Windsong playing as The BlueSouls- they are now known as Waterhouse & Windsong. The Wise Owl in Cambria, CA.www.debrawindsong.com

Thoughts on Cover:
The live tune has a bouncy feel with acoustic guitar, harmonica and vocals. The tune is slowed down from the raucous original and struts pretty easily. A pretty relaxed, and smooth live cover for this Monday.

Album Review: Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts - Talkin' to the Trees

Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts
Talkin' to the Trees
*and1/2 out of *****

Neil Young has always followed his muse. Sometimes it leads to magic, sometimes to solid results and sometimes things are better left unsaid. His newest release, titled Talkin' to the Trees, his first with The Chrome Hearts backing him, falls into the last category. While it is great that Neil is still making music, perhaps this one should have stayed on the shelf as the album feels torpid, redundant and misguided at times.

Grateful Dead
Dave's Pick #55 Le Zénith, Paris, France 10/28/90
**and1/2 out of *****

Standard disclaimer: When reviewing any Grateful Dead release at this point, it needs to be noted that a lot of the truly great shows from the band have already been professionally released. (If you are new to the band, check out RtBE's Beginners Guide to The Grateful Dead Part's one and two.) With their vast back catalog on archive.org and all of their previous releases, the band's selections are running thin when it comes to must own, professionally released concerts.

That said, the band still release shows because rabid fans (RtBE included) will listen to everything they put out. So let's dive in...

Album Review: Alan Sparhawk - With Trampled by Turtles

Alan Sparhawk
With Trampled by Turtles
***and1/2 out of *****

Low was an institution. The slowcore, indie rock band from Duluth, MN was the partnership of Alan Sparhawk (guitar and vocals) and his wife Mimi Parker (drums and vocals). Parker passed away in November 2022 and it turned out the next time Sparhawk took the stage was with fellow Duluth friends, the bluegrass outfit Trampled by Turtles.

Dylan Cover #697 Toni Lindgren "Buckets of Rain" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by Toni Lindgren playing "Buckets of Rain"

Thoughts on Original:
From our first take on a cover of this tune:
Dylan's mid-career masterpiece closes out with this song and to me it always seemed tacked on whimsically.  After going through a ton of raw emotion with "Idiot Wind" and other tunes, Blood on the Tracks finishes with this ditty.  Honestly, never one of my favorites, it acted more as a palate cleanser but a sweet one at that.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
This is the first time we are hearing Toni Lndgren, a guitar player based in L.A.

Thoughts on Cover
:
A fantastic acoustic cover that keeps it light and airy like the original.

Live Review: The Who - 8/30/25 Madison Square Garden, NYC

The Who
8/30/25 Madison Square Garden NYC

On a pleasant summer Saturday Night in New York City, rock and roll legends The Who played Madison Square Garden on their supposed farewell tour titled The Song Is Over. Before the band started up Pete Towshend stated that The Who had played MSG 36 times and that this would "probably" be the last time, so the door is still open to a return.

Dylan Cover #696 "Union Sundown" Live August 12th 2010

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by Alternate Infidels playing "Union Sundown"

Thoughts on Original:
From what has become an annual tradition here and here:
Wanted to pick this one for Labor Day as it is Dylan's take on the lack of US manufacturing jobs as well as the increasing flux of capitalism in society and the death of unions. The idea of greed taking over is nothing new, but this song seems to come from an impulsive Dylan (a lot do) and shows up on Infidel's of which Dylan has commented something along the lines of "Those songs stuck around too long".

Ideas seem to be a bit jumbled on this disk, but not on this tune, his lament at no good paying jobs for American workers is clear, but he isn't passing the buck. It is all of HIS products that are foreign made, this isn't a plea for change as a younger Dylan might have done; it is a simple statement of fact...and a sad one at that.

Having grown up in a extremely pro-Labor house hold, I just wanted to point this tune out and the fact that Dylan wrote it over 40 years ago, and things have only gotten worse... Happy Labor Day....

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
Well this one is a mystery.  It was posted fifteen years ago to account that just has two other videos posted (another Dylan cover from the same show). All the info I got is: TRIBUTE TO BOB DYLAN 12 augusti 2010 i Vasa, Finland.

If anyone has any more post it in the comments and I will update this post.

Thoughts on Cover:
Normally I would skip posting this without knowing who the artists are, but this is a ripping live cover of "Union Sundown". One of the better versions of this song RtBE has heard. Stomping drums, great organ, smoking slide guitar and excellent vocals from this cover band. Great stuff!
