Album Review: Grateful Dead - Dave's Picks 44: Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon 6/23/90

Grateful Dead
Dave's Picks 44:
Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon June 23, 1990
***and1/2 out of *****

The final Dave's Picks of 2022 goes back to summer of 1990, just like the final Dave's Picks of 2021. Spring and Summer 1990 were the last consistently top notch tours of the Dead's career and archivist David Lemieux has made the most of them.

Full Show Friday: Inside Out - Reading, PA 6/28/90

These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...This week...Inside Out!

Some months our Full Show Friday's will focus on specific artistsyearsvenues, festivals or some combo of it all
This months Full Show Friday Series is brought to you by the letter I.

An exciting find on youtube as RtBE have loved Inside Out since the mid nineties but never had the chance to see them live, getting into them after they broke up. An amazing video and audio from [hate5six] gives us the chance now in 2021. Sometimes the internet is really really great, here is info on this recording from Wikipedia:
In October 2016, a VHS video of a 1990 Inside Out show in Reading, PA surfaced and was made available online.[4] According to hate5six.com founder Sunny Singh, the Reading, PA video "includes a number of [Inside Out]'s unreleased material. Burning Fight, Deathbed (which Vic later transformed into 108's famous anthem), Undertone (Zack screaming "WAKE UP!" over and over again at the beginning foreshadows the chorus of a slightly more famous song he would write a year later), Empty Days, Redemption, Blind Oppressor, Turn and Face."[5]

For those who don't know here is some info on the band, and yes that is a young Zach De La Rocha fronting them. Full Set with great sound and video all things considered. Enjoy:

Beginners Guide To The Grateful Dead - Part Two

There is a lot of music out there and some artists have massive catalogs which can paralyze new listeners with overwhelming choices. This Beginners Guide series will attempt to give new listeners entry points to some of these artists. Today we will look at: The Grateful Dead.

This post was very long so we are breaking it into two parts. This first offering will discuss the five places RtBE feels are the best entry points to the band. The follow up post will dive into the different eras of the Dead and pull out some well known and underappreciated shows for further listening.

In part one RtBE discussed live shows and albums which will ease a listener into the band. The group has such a wide range of music/sound/shows that RtBE went through the years they were active and pulled out specific highlights. While this gets long, it is literally the tip of the iceberg. The Internet Archive is a digital gold mine for amazing Grateful Dead shows, but below are are choices throughout the years for highlights and further listening.

Let's do a deeper dive now...

The Masters: Neil Young and Crazy Horse - Top 5 Albums

RtBE loves listening to new music and prides itself on keeping tabs on up and coming artists but in 2019 we are also going to have a monthly spotlight on legendary artists who we really love. We are calling this series The Masters. It will focus on the best albums, live records, transcendent shows and other odd ways we appreciate the artists and their contribution to music, culture and our formation.

For August The Masters focuses on the great Neil Young.

This month we already chatted about Neil Young's best studio albums, his best live work and now we tackle his studio work with Crazy Horse. The reason we broke all of these up is because if we didn't, the records below would have dominated all of our lists; there is no doubt that RtBE likes Neil Young best when he is backed up by Crazy Horse.

With a new NY&CH album coming soon we couldn't be more excited to revisit these great records. As always this list is a discussion starter, not a final statement on the matter. Let's dip into it as the top album on this list is our favorite thing Neil has done and I guess could technically top all three of our previous lists.

As always this list is a discussion starter, not a final statement on the matter.   Let's dig in...

The Masters - The Grateful Dead - Best Live Albums

RtBE loves listening to new music and prides itself on keeping tabs on up and coming artists but in 2019 we are also going to have a monthly spotlight on legendary artists who we really love. We are calling this series The Masters. It will focus on the best albums, live records, transcendent shows and other odd ways we appreciate the artists and their contribution to music, culture and our formation.

For June The Masters focuses on the great The Grateful Dead.

Live music is the best thing out there. Being caught in the moment is religion. Palpable vibes of healing and energy are transmitted and shit...gets...real. For this month's focus, The Grateful Dead may be more tied to the live show than any other rock band in history. They developed a literal touring mini economy and because of the bands massive structure, had to be on the road almost constantly.

The group had many phases and multiple lineup shifts, but the stage is where they truly succeeded as a collective, playing in the moment and without net. The group soared more than non-fans give them credit for and that thrilling collective experience is what kept fans touring the country with their musical heroes.

For other entries in The Masters, when it comes to live albums there were some limits, with the Dead it is just the opposite, there have been so many live releases it is hard to limit this list to "official" releases as prolific taping, the Internet Archive and tons of other sites have made obtaining a certain night in the bands history incredibly easy.

However, since we have been using official releases for other entries of The Masters, we will stick with that for this post and move to personal "Go-To" shows at a later date. We know that times have changed and while One From the Vault and Hundred Year Hall were instrumental to our love of the Dead, these days people do not need official releases to get soundboard quality and are much more likely to just stream a solid show then purchase an "official release".

With Dicks/Dave's Picks, the criminally underrated Road Trips series and various completest Box Sets being offered up seemingly every month (their whole history will be officially released soon) it is hard to keep track of which shows are officially out there and which are still in the hands of tapers, so for this list we are skipping all of those and just going with live albums released officially by the band. Going to be tough, but we will give this a shot, below are our top five live albums from the Grateful Dead.

As always, these lists are designed to start conversations, not end them.

Dylan Cover #383 The Grateful Dead "Just Like Tom Thumb Blues" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by The Grateful Dead playing "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues"

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this tune:
An energetic romp that has been covered by everyone, this tune is a great swirl through Dylan's freaky mind. It was a punch and a whirlwind journey through Juarez, Mexico around Easter time...Maybe. There are lots of literary hints dropped, as well as a mischievous smile throughout. One of the first Dylan tunes we gravitated towards and with good reason, it is still one of our favorites.
Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
RtBE loves the Grateful Dead. We have voted for them as the Best American Band in our favorite bar stool conversation and are showcasing them this month in our Master's Series.

Thoughts on Cover:
Ahh the rare Phil Lesh lead vocal!  As we mentioned back in April when we celebrated the historic Phil and Phriends shows, RtBE has no problem with Phil's vocals, but can understand it if certain people don't dig his style. As for this cover the group gives it a unique intro and outro, and Phil mixes up the vocals. A fun yet non essential dance through this tune for a July Monday...which Phil dressed for properly...how about those shorts!

Bottom Line Tribute Coming in October

One of the iconic NYC live music venues, The Bottom Line closed in 2004 but Paul Shaffer will be hosting an All-Star tribute to the location right down the block from where it once stood.

There will be a two-night tribute show (October 13 & 14th) at the NYU Schimmel Center as a host of stars come out and join the former Late Night/Late Show band leader. Our friends over at Brooklyn Vegan are reporting that the likes of David Johansen and Christine Lavin will be there and the Schimmel website itself mentions Darlene LoveJimmy Vivino will also be showing up to share stories and songs from the venue. Here is a snippet of the preview:

Join us for a multimedia celebration of The Bottom Line, featuring music and memories, songs and stories by a selection of artists who were regular performers at the iconic club. Host Paul Shaffer with special guests will swap stories about their favorite times on stage, off stage and backstage and perform songs that made the club a destination for fans of all music genres.
From opening night on February 12, 1974, when headliner Dr. John jammed with Stevie Wonder and Johnny Winter in front of an audience that included Mick Jagger, Carly Simon, Bette Midler and an SRO crowd of entertainment industry luminaries, The Bottom Line was destined to be a cultural touchstone and hub of the music industry. For the next 30 years The Bottom Line influenced and impacted millions of music fans, providing a rich soundtrack to their lives that reflected the changing times.
Should be a cool event and tickets are onsale now. There were thousands of amazing shows that were recorded at the venue, and perhaps down the road we will dedicate a month of Full Show Friday's to it (like we did for CBGB's) but for now, how about a few individual songs recorded at the location to get us in the mood?

First up, Tower of Power (how about those fucking hair cuts?!?!) playing "Squib Cakes" from 1989

Then we go to 1978 for Van Morrison and "Wavelength", recorded live at the club:

Then we hop to 1990 and check out JJ Cale doing "Magnolia":

And wrap it up with some some jazz in the venue as Branford Marsalis and company do "Yes or No" in 1989:

We skew more popular for February after the cold (and un-clicked-on) Jazz Jan, hey we need page views. This was the biggest tour of the 90's as Madonna takes the stage for her Blond Ambition Tour in full here.

Not the biggest fan of Madonna, so we don't have much to say, but this is pro shot, pro sound and "remastered" according to the youtube poster, so Enjoy:

Full Show Friday: Nirvana 4/10/90 Blind Pig, Ann Arbor, MI

We search the murky back waters of youtube to find full concerts and post them to the site weekly, come back every seven days to help us celebrate Full Show Friday's.  These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...This week.. Nirvana!
This Full Show Friday is going to toss it back to a little band from the Pacific Northwest that didn't do much except, you know, change the course of popular music exponentially. Nirvana is up today and this show from 1990 is a great one. Compiled for Youtube, the video puts you right on the stage and the sound is better then could possibly be hoped for. Kurt's bass in particular is bumping for this full set, keeping things rock solid amongst the noise.

This is before the band hit it big and they are on their Bleach tour. You can hear and see some magic on this small stage as the band was yet to hit it big and still (relatively) happy and hungry. Digging through the set for some highlights; we love the opening "School" slamming with aggression, two of our favorite covers from the band "Love Buzz" and "Molly's Lips" as well as a mega "Spank Thru" a powerful "Negative Creep" hits hard as well. There is something engaging about the Bleach album and today's live show is a great example of that era in Nirvana's career.

Enjoy:

Full Show Friday: Darkthrone Live in Oslo 1990

We search the murky back waters of youtube to find full concerts and post them to the site weekly, come back every seven days to help us celebrate Full Show Friday's.  These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...This week.. Darkthrone!
It is upon us!  BLACK Friday! In a tradition we started last year it is time for the most evil Norwegian Black Metal ever; because really it is the perfect soundtrack if you are hitting the brutality of shopping on this day. Granted we here at RtBE are not huge fans of the genre but have researched a few bands after enjoying the documentary Until The Light Takes Us

Here is Darkthrone during their heyday the early 90's when they helped shape the genre. The quality isn't the best, but the music is completely bad ass. A bit more palpable then others in the genre for us to listen to as it goes for a death metal feel. The performance takes place in 1990, hey the same year we highlighted yesterday, but this isn't a parade. It is a show at the beginning of the groups "Unholy Trinity" phase as the Norwegian's moved more from Death to Black metal.

Enjoy the darkness:

Happy Thanksgiving from RtBE!

Have a Happy Thanksgiving. Make sure you spend sometime over this holiday doing what is truly important...Watching The Last Waltz:

Also make sure to enjoy your time with loved ones and family.

Last year we had some clips from 1986's Thanksgiving Day Parade, today we are tossing it back to 1990. First up we got some Muppet's as this was the first parade after the death of Jim Henson

Some cool info in that piece.

Now how about Patti LaBelle singing "Wouldn't It Be Beautiful" on top of a giant turkey:

We will also give a shout out to the kids who march and play the music, so here is a full piece on the Marching Spoofhounds as the MHS marching band shares their journey to the parade.

Full Show Friday: Screamin' Jay Hawkins Tokyo 1990

We search the murky back waters of youtube to find full concerts and post them to the site weekly, come back every seven days to help us celebrate Full Show Friday's.  These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...This week...Screamin' Jay Hawkins!

This month RTBE will pay homage to The Blues with 5 special shows for every Friday in October. So get sad, get happy eat your greens and get the blues.
What a treat on this Halloween, we get the freakydeaky blues of one of the all-time great performers, Screamin' Jay Hawkins. If you haven't seen the documentary on him yet, you need too, what a life- or at least what a world class yarn spinner.

Nobody could be more perfect to wrap up this monthly blues series on Halloween then Screamin' Jay. So happy there was a show on youtube. This is the reason we decide to pick October to celebrate the blues so we could on Halloween with Screamin' Jay.  Just another example of the scope and depth of the blues, they certainly have put a spell on us.

Enjoy:
