Full Show Friday: Enslaved Live at Hellfest 2016

It is upon us! BLACK Friday! In a tradition we started a few years ago it is time for the most evil Black Metal ever; because really it is the perfect soundtrack if you are hitting the brutality of shopping on this day. Granted we here at RtBE are not fans of the genre (or shopping) but have researched a few bands after enjoying the documentary Until The Light Takes Us.

We return to Hellfest 2016 and here comes the Norwegian fire breathers Enslaved as this years entry for Black Friday. While they started more traditional Black Metal they have evolved out of it a bit. Anyways...

Album Review: Sunn 0))) - Life Metal

The follow up to 2015's Kannon, Life Metal is more absorbing feedback drone from the masters Sunn 0))). Main guitarists Greg Anderson Stephen O’Malley turn up their stack of amplifiers and radiate sound from everywhere, as minor touches and flourishes help set sonic tones. While not as successful as their masterpiece Monoliths and Dimensions, Life Metal is a triumphant return for the decibel ramping guitar duo.

Opener "Between Sleipnir’s Breaths" starts and ends with samples from horses neighing, in between the riffs roar and compared to past outings things move to a climax slightly faster. Hildur Guðnadóttir spoken word, breathy vocals hard to make out and get washed in the sound, but things are ominous as always.

"Troubled Air" increases the screeching while adding chimes and as sense of brightness, as if it is an awaking from a deep slumber to the overloaded sound of morning while "Aurora" dips back into the darkness of guttural roars but it is the least engaging piece here. While their are other musicians who ad flourishes, T.O.S. Nieuwenhuizen (moog) Hildur Guðnadóttir (Haldorophone, Electric Cello, Voice) Tim Midyett (Bass Guitar, Bass Crotales) and Anthony Pateras (Pipe Organ) this is Anderson and O'Malley's show as their six strings hum and reverberate.

Album closer "Novæ" drips out of "Aurora" but in the first few moments of it's over twenty four minute journey it is already more inventive. It's cutting riffs and warbling feedback echoes lead the way through winding passage that rev up and cool back down with low end rumble all among the feedback and body soaking power.

Produced by Steve Albini Life Metal is the first of two releases from Sunn 0))) in 2019 and while their sound clearly is not for everyone, fans will be ecstatic that the reverb and doom both loom large on this four song album. Sunn 0))) is back with a vengeance.

Album Review: Tomb Mold - Planetary Clairvoyance

Tomb Mold hail from the cold North of Toronto, but their heavy as hell tunes and cosmic excursions suggest even further out locales for their landing points in the cosmic realm of heavy metal. The quartets most recent album is Planetary Clairvoyance and it plays in many metallic sub genres as it slams its way through your cranium.

The quartet, Max Klebanoff Drums, Vocals, Steve Musgrave Bass, Payson Power and Derrick Vella Guitars, slam and motor but also use intricate passages and shifts in tone to keep the ear off balanced and engaged. Opener "beg For Life" has the most obvious example of this as midway through the tune there is an acoustic break with classical guitar amidst the heavy riffs crunching low end which leads to soaring solos and riffs to close; it is an exhilarating display of metal prowess.

If you are listening to a band named Tomb Mold, you probably already have some idea what these vocals sound like, but Klebanoff goes one step deeper and beyond. Their lyrics incorporate outer space, aliens and possibly the financial situation of modern day Bombay, but listeners will never be able to understand any of it.

There is no doubt that metal fans are used to this, but the vocal style completely limits the groups appeal and acts a one trick pony, without adding lyrical content to the mix, a shame because this playing is top notch.

"Planetary Clairvoyance (They Grow Inside Pt 2)" uses double kick drum and mixes punk with metal as soaring guitars slam into each other and soar. Both "Infinite Resurrection" and "Accelerative Phenomenae" frantically travel up and down the fret-board with screeching riffs, hyper active drummer and thundering finales while "Phosphorene Ultimate" is a bizarre spoken word sound experiment which works as a pause from the metal assault.

"Cerulean Salvation" ends with a spacey flow which drips into the black hole chaos of "Heat Death" which just may be the best of the bunch with its elongated intro. If you enjoy the singing style or even can just deal with it, Planetary Clairvoyance, is a hell of metal record. Even as it stands RtBE enjoys the pounding and growling immensely.

Album Review: Chelsea Wolfe - Birth of Violence

Chelsea Wolfe’s most recent effort, 2017’s Hiss Spun, was a heavy/punishing affair, and if you judged her newest by its title, Birth of Violence, you would think this is simply more of the same, but that’s not to be as Wolfe completely shifts gears, returning to her folk roots with exciting results.

While the sludgy industrial drone may be gone the naturalistic Gothic folk in its place can be just as dark. On the title track Wolfe sings of codeine inflicted comas and coming to know what she needs, visualizing while she bleeds, but the musical accompaniment boarders on pretty, even gorgeous at times.

Opener “Mother Road” wallows in its sparseness as doom slowly arrives via tom drums as strings warble at the fringes before a full cinematic ending; all after Wolfe has sung about spiders in Chernobyl. Things are musically brighter with the easy dripping/swirling sounds around smooth vocals as Chelsea surprisingly calls the listener to dance on “American Darkness” before the gorgeous heights Wolfe’s voice reaches on the ominous “Deranged for Rock & Roll”.

Birth of Violence is chock full of cinematic moments as Wolfe uses her vocals like a flute at times blending with varied instrumentation bending and soaring, constantly growing throughout the songs. “Erde” uses strings in the deep background barely audible until the dramatic final swelling while “Dirt Universe” slowly marches along, increasing the power as it progresses. Wolfe’s vocals truly tie it all together whether they are performing high wire acts like on “When Anger Turns to Honey” or setting the exasperated/breathy scene on “Little Grave”

Ben Chisholm worked with Wolfe to create the sonic landscapes around her earlier constructed folk melodies and those expansive pastures can help elevate and expand on her sound with the simplest twist of knobs or insertion of distortion; from the lush/delicate “Be All Things” to rain storm closing “The Storm” the mood is set with expertise.

Birth of Violence pulls off the neat trick of managing to sound hopeful among the darkness, an excellent statement on modern times and a stark reminder of Wolfe’s vast artistic range.

Full Show Friday: Ghost 6/15/18 @ The Capital Theater

Some months our Full Show Friday's will focus on specific artists, years, venues, festivals or some combo of it all. This month we focus on the gorgeous Capital Theatre over the recent years.

The Capital Theater in Port Chester, NY was a popular stomping ground throughout the 70's and 80's for musicians with a sprinkling during the early 90's tossed in. It was refurbished by Peter Shapiro and opened again in 2012 with a Bob Dylan concert to re-christen the venue to rock and roll once again.

RtBE has caught some great shows since the venue reopened and will be going to more in the near future. This month the focus for Full Show Friday's will be on some of the dynamite shows throughout the "Cap's" history.

While Black Friday has come with black metal full shows in RtBE's past, unfortunately we couldn't find any that were filmed at the Capital Theater. The closest we could find was Ghost filmed earlier this year and while they aren't Black Metal, they are metal, so it will have to do today.

The video has some major issues as it was filmed in 6FPS which gives it a delayed tripped out look, but the sound is fine for the Swedish theatrical metal band. Full setlist with timings below. Enjoy:

Album Review: Integrity & Krieg - Split

The newest release from the Cleveland metallic hardcore godfathers Integrity is a split offering with their friends in the black metal band Krieg. The disk is punishing and raw, captivating for fans of either of the bands.

Starting with one of the two new songs they offer up on this release Integrity is immediately propulsive. The band are blasting through "Scorched Earth" an aptly named title that delivers a wasted landscape in it's path. "Flames of the Immortal" continues the onslaught with blistering crazy fast riffs from guitarist Dom Romeo and a grooving drum beat under the chaos before a straight up metal solo fire out from the depths.

The galloping "Sons of Satan" is a take on lead singers Dwid solo project tune (the expertly named Vermapyre)of the same name and it is a brutal attack which is fist pumping singalong ready. Integrity's part of the album wraps up with steam slamming straight ahead cover of "Document One" from GISM stuttering out in digital feedback before Krieg takes over the record.

The blistering pace which started off this project is scaled back as the more sludge driven pummeling of Jersey dark metal rockers takes over on the longest offering here, "Circle of Guilt". The throaty screams of Neill Jameson dominate "This Time I'll Leave You To Drown" while a dramatic heavy score moves around the raw vocals.

The split release closes with "The Sick Winds Stir the Cold Dawn" which ends up the weakest offering here, with muddy production but as it wraps up it proves that the metallic ferocity before it was pretty special as both bands excelled on this brief banging release.

Album Review Skeletonwitch - Devouring Radiant Light

The veteran Athens, Ohio based metal band Skeletonwitch's sixth full length album Devouring Radiant Light also happens to be the first with their new front man Adam Cleman's (Veil of Maya). While the shifting vocals and styles may be jarring for long time fans, the variety and energy makes for a hell of a heavy ride.

The album switches between long black metal epics and shorter more punk/thrash metal leaning tracks. The group is comfortable with either style, and the first two songs are prime examples of this. "Fen of Shadows" starts the album with sweeping grandeur, epic in scope and sound while "When Paradise Fades" blasts out directly and ends with some soaring melodic guitar solos over the fury.

"Temple of the Sun" is a monster and the highlight here with slamming drums, scorching guitars and layered vocals that pairs screams with even deeper screams. The track catapults ahead with all players (Nate "N8 Feet Under" Garnette – guitars, Scott "Scunty D." Hedrick – guitars, Evan "Loosh" Linger – bass, Adam Clemans – vocals, Jon "The Charn" Rice – drums) clicking and melding their metal sub-genres into a propulsive winner.

Produced by Kurt Ballou the record is crisp, layers of instrumentation are separated and each sound can breath even during the most chaotic of passages. The title track amps the level of drama with a gorgeous intro before the gut wrenching screams and thunderous playing dominates while "The Vault" is another long player that winds throughout the darkened forest before galloping into the ether. "Carnarium Eternal" gets the thrash levels raised by maintaining a sick groove with blast beats before "Sacred Soil" ends the solid record on black metal note.

Experiencing lineup upheaval, Skeletonwitch has taken the change in stride, shifting their sounds and still producing a well rounded metal album on Devouring Radiant Light.

Album Review: Rites to Sedition - Ancestral Blood

The Charlotte, North Carolina based Rites to Sedition loves to shoot for the grandiose while mining the various sub-genres of the metal world on their debut release Ancestral Blood. The group bounces between long extended passages of melodic/symphonic/speed/black and death metal building cinematic drama and tension.

The five piece of Brian Kingsland - Vocals, Gabriel Lucia - Guitars, Keys, Vocals, Jon Westmoreland - Guitars, Jesse Lane - Bass, Mitch Moore - Drums, use dynamics pairing the long running numbers with the respites, some of which are no more than nature sounds around wolves howling ("The Lunar Approach"). A better example is the opening tension filled "Advent" which leads ominously into the the fret board dynamics of "Waveform 66".

A mega example of the power of the players comes along in "The Moon Titan Phylon". Colored by double bass drums, guttural vocal howls and insanely fast guitar work the track is a metallic monster, however, the underlying lynch pin is the soaring sense of ever present drama taking the listener on an insane rocket ride to the cosmos without remaining cold and robotic. The song is an album standout that rides dramatic waves and crashes over it's ten and a half minute run time but never lets up on the ferocity and technical ability.

Too many bands that play this sort of music sound like machines but Rites of Sedition also play with emotion and feel alive among the fury and histrionics.

That's not to say everything is great their first time out. Like all bands of this ilk the vocals are there for coloring only while closer "The Golden Age of Saturnia" runs on long rehashing album themes without adding much new, acting more as overkill than a final album statement.

The production is also very lacking, (leading to removal of ranking stars above) the sound can become tinny with all of the instruments clamoring for the ear. The cymbals in particular frustratingly wash away rather than truly clang with precision and the mixes are uneven as all the instrumentation does not have proper room to breath losing, the bass at times almost completely.

As the band grows though they have a solid core of songs and epics to build off of. "Echelons of Imposition" uses the keyboard backing to lift off, the title tracks impending sense of doom matches nicely with its marching/head banging underlying groove and "Sorcerers of Atlantis" amps up the thrash vibe. "Wartide" condenses all of the bands melodic metallic elements successfully into a track that manages to stay under five minutes, a rarity.

Full Show Friday: Section 8 Albany, NY June 5th 1994

For December RtBE is having a special focus with our Full Show Friday's. This month we will showcase live shows, that we were at and also were huge influences on our musical tastes. We will also be trying to get some outside perspectives when we can. This will be a fun and personal month for us, hope you enjoy.

To start the month we are going back to our youth and one of the first bands that really broke us out of the MTV world of the early to mid 90's, as we focus on the Clifton Park, NY based hardcore/metal band Section 8. Today's Full Show Friday is a piece of history as it is the bands first show in the legendary QE2 in Albany from 1994.

We were lucky enough to head down to the show with some friends as three of the band members went to our high school and were from our suburban town. This is the first time we were able to see actual friends, play in an actual clubs, with actually GREAT music. It made the idea, of bands, music, and honestly life, realer in a sense that things were palpable and possible. Looking back it was inspiring on many levels.

We recently had the pleasure of chatting with our friend and Section 8 drummer Tim Parent, his memory of the bands first show were as follows:

"I think we were all just pretty overwhelmed at the feedback and did not expect what kind of response we would get. The support was definitely amazing and unexpected for sure, but much appreciated."

As a fan, we were hooked immediately, in fact we still have the bands first four track demo tape and old school t-shirts. When the show starts it is pretty amazing that we still know all the words and remember instantly all the great tunes the band created. This show, being the first, is pretty amazing as the band is on point right from their creation, the tracks are fully formed and exhilarating.

The songs really opened our world to local hardcore/punk/metal scene and in retrospect Section 8 were the perfect conduit as they incorporated a lot of Black Sabbath who we already dug. We instantly got into the Albany scene via bands like Withstand and One King Down (Rob from One King Down does the intro at the show below), then moved to the Upstate NY straight edge scene with Earth Crisis and Snapcase. After enjoying that we traveled south to the New York City Hardcore scene with bands like Cro-Mags, Agnostic Front, Murphy's Law and Judge. Now as the scene ages, so do we but we still love it and revisiting with great bands makes it all worth it.

It was a great few years discovering heavy, aggressive bands that really hit home for us, We have Section 8 themselves, Tim, Andras, Mike and Kasey to thank for opening up our ears and whole world view with their gloriously dark sounds, thanks fellows.
