Dylan Cover #390 Neil Young "All Along The Watchtower" Live Farm Aid 1994

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by Neil Young, Willie Nelson and Crazy Horse  performing "All Along The Watchtower"

Thoughts on Original:
From our first take on a cover of this:
There are certain songs we are surprised we missed cover versions of in the Bard's back catalog...but "All Along The Watchtower" isn't one of them. There is a reason we haven't covered a cover version (confusing). As Wilson mentioned in his post back in cover #44 there is only one true version of this song...and that is Mr. Jimi's.
Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
RtBE digs on Uncle Neil a bunch and are showcasing him this month in our Master's Series.

Thoughts on Cover:
For one of the most expressive guitar players to channel both Hendrix and Dylan with Crazy Horse backing him up and Willie Nelson guesting on acoustic, this is a special version of this tune.

Dinosaur Jr. (Somehow) Top Japanese Charts in 2019

In one of the most bizarre music stories in the last few years, one of RtBE's Personal Favorites Dinosaur Jr. has somehow beat out the likes of Arianna Grande to top the Japanese charts last week.  Yes, you are awake, yes, this is 2019.

Thanks to our friend Noah for send us this amazing story. Kotaku dives into the mystery but it is official, "Over Your Shoulder", a song which was never released as a single, never had a video made, and was part of an album released in 1994, is number one in Japan, based on youtube views.

The track from 1994's Without A Sound is a fine, typical Dino Jr tune, if a bit dull compared to the bands other outings, but then again Without A Sound isn't our favorite album of theirs. A few years ago we ran down our rankings of the trio's records for a Glide and it was towards the bottom.

We also did a feature where we selected one song from each of the bands records to showcase. "Over Your Shoulder" didn't make that one either as we chose "I Don't Think So" from Without A Sound.

Pretty crazy story (got to love the Japanese keeping it weird) but this along with Tidal's fudging makes the charts seem a little suspect. However, if this gets Dinosaur Jr. a headlining tour of Japan ala Spinal Tap when "Sex Farm" hit it big, that would be a hell of story.

Happy Thanksgiving From RtBE!

Have a Happy Thanksgiving. Make sure you spend some time over this holiday doing what is truly important...Watching The Last Waltz:

For the gear heads reading this, here is an excellent run down of all the equipment used for this historic show.

Since it is a holiday, also make sure to enjoy your time with loved ones and family. As a famous man once said, "Enjoy Every Sandwich"...especially the leftover turkey, mashed potato, stuffing and gravy ones on potato rolls...

The last few years we have thrown it back to Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parades of the past and this years no different.

Here is the 1994 Thanksgiving Day Parade, now go get stuffed!

Full Show Friday: The Allman Brothers Woodstock 1994

We search the murky back waters of youtube to find full concerts and post them to the site weekly, come back every seven days to help us celebrate Full Show Friday's. These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...This week...The Allman Brothers Band!
Some months our Full Show Friday's will focus on specific artistsyearsvenues, festivals or some combo of it all. This month we focus on summer concert standby's who always played the picturesque Saratoga Performing Arts Center over the years.

August always makes RtBE think of upstate New York, specifically the town of Saratoga. Going to high school just a few miles from the town, we would spend many August days at the beautiful horse track and hot nights in the state park watching bands from all over. A few years back we presented shows from the venue itself This month we will highlight some bands who always seemed to roll through and we (mostly) got to see live.

Well we will start this loose Full Show Friday concept month with one of the all time great live acts who seem to get better and better when the sun was shinning on them. Maybe it was their southern roots, or the blue skies but the cosmic energy seeped into things; no one can ever say this band wasn't a joy when they were hittin' the note.

We caught them once at SPAC in their latter day lineup with Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks dueling on guitars, but here in their '94 version you get Dickie Betts and the thunderous Allen Woody on bass (along with the always amazing Haynes). Just a few ours south of Saratoga in the odd, revamped, Woodstock '94, which our friend Clancy worked at...strange days indeed.

Pro shot with pro muddy sound (typical for Woodstock) which gets a little better after the opening "Statesboro Blues" and "Blue Skies", if you want to skip ahead do not pass "Jessica" which is the clear highlight of this set. Enjoy:

Full Show Friday: Section 8 Albany, NY June 5th 1994

We search the murky back waters of youtube to find full concerts and post them to the site weekly, come back every seven days to help us celebrate Full Show Friday's. These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...This week...Section 8!

For December RtBE is having a special focus with our Full Show Friday's. This month we will showcase live shows, that we were at and also were huge influences on our musical tastes. We will also be trying to get some outside perspectives when we can. This will be a fun and personal month for us, hope you enjoy.

To start the month we are going back to our youth and one of the first bands that really broke us out of the MTV world of the early to mid 90's, as we focus on the Clifton Park, NY based hardcore/metal band Section 8. Today's Full Show Friday is a piece of history as it is the bands first show in the legendary QE2 in Albany from 1994.

We were lucky enough to head down to the show with some friends as three of the band members went to our high school and were from our suburban town. This is the first time we were able to see actual friends, play in an actual clubs, with actually GREAT music. It made the idea, of bands, music, and honestly life, realer in a sense that things were palpable and possible. Looking back it was inspiring on many levels.

We recently had the pleasure of chatting with our friend and Section 8 drummer Tim Parent, his memory of the bands first show were as follows:
"I think we were all just pretty overwhelmed at the feedback and did not expect what kind of response we would get. The support was definitely amazing and unexpected for sure, but much appreciated."
As a fan, we were hooked immediately, in fact we still have the bands first four track demo tape and old school t-shirts. When the show starts it is pretty amazing that we still know all the words and remember instantly all the great tunes the band created. This show, being the first, is pretty amazing as the band is on point right from their creation, the tracks are fully formed and exhilarating.

The songs really opened our world to local hardcore/punk/metal scene and in retrospect Section 8 were the perfect conduit as they incorporated a lot of Black Sabbath who we already dug. We instantly got into the Albany scene via bands like Withstand and One King Down (Rob from One King Down does the intro at the show below), then moved to the Upstate NY straight edge scene with Earth Crisis and Snapcase. After enjoying that we traveled south to the New York City Hardcore scene with bands like Cro-Mags, Agnostic Front, Murphy's Law and Judge. Now as the scene ages, so do we but we still love it and revisiting with great bands makes it all worth it.

It was a great few years discovering heavy, aggressive bands that really hit home for us, We have Section 8 themselves, Tim, Andras, Mike and Kasey to thank for opening up our ears and whole world view with their gloriously dark sounds, thanks fellows.

Now feel free to Enjoy:

01:00 Intro
02:18 Strife
05:23 Forth to War
07:53 Torn
13:15 Words of Love
16:43 Flatline
20:12 Nightfall
24:36 No One
And as a bonus two songs of Section 8 live from their November '95 show that was a treat, crowd was insane on that night, so was Drew's t-shirt if I remember correctly.
