New Single/Video from Ghostly Kisses "Keep It Real"

French-Canadians Margaux Sauvé and Louis-Étienne Santais are Ghostly Kisses. They are sharing a new song titled "Keep It Real"

Sauvé explains the track:
“stands out for us as the darkest and one of the most impactful tracks on the album. It was inspired by the narratives shared in the Box of Secrets, where individuals wrestled with deciphering the thoughts of others and sought to shed light on complex situations.”

New Single/Video from crêpe girl "Keep It Simple"

French-American, indie-pop artist crêpe girl (Eliza Grégoire) has a new single, "Keep It Simple"

About the song notes Grégoire states:
“‘KEEP IT SIMPLE!’ is about wanting to be with someone so much even if they don’t want anything real with you, and clinging on to them while thinking you have tough enough skin to endure that. It hurt writing and definitely brought up a lot of things emotionally for me… It’s one of my most honest songs.”

Album Review: The Allman Brothers Band - Live at Manley Field House, Syracuse University 1972

The Allman Brothers Band
Live at Manley Field House, Syracuse University
**** out of *****

The newest archival release from The Allman Brothers Band shines a light on a brief period in their history when they were a five piece outfit. Live at Manley Field House, Syracuse University 1972, was recorded just six months after the death of guitar great Duane Allman and features the Brothers as a leaner blues rock band.

New Single/Video from Salt Cathedral "Terminal Woes"

New video from Bogota Colombia based Salt Cathedral for their song titled "Terminal Woes"

Regarding the song Juli states:

The creative process is mostly unexplainable and unique in that it’s not repeatable. Anyone who’s dabbled into art making will identify with the feeling of not knowing how you got to something and not being sure you’ll ever be able to make anything like it again. That is perhaps what makes this process so magical.

In music, songwriting specifically, phonetics or stream of consciousness words that come out might lead to an idea that becomes transcendental. Sometimes, I find my subconscious knowing what I really think and feel before I do. Just like in Jonathan Haidt’s theory of the elephant and the rider where the elephant is our subconscious and the rider our consciousness, (the logic with which we retroactively justify the elephant’s behavior) I too find ways to justify my brain’s phonetics or random word choices as ideas that may have existed in my subconscious.

Finding what fits my gibberish is a process of imagination. That’s how I came up with ‘Terminal Woes’. If a melody comes into existence with a certain sequence of vowels, I have a sense that it must live there. When I came onto the phrase ‘Terminal Woes,’ it spoke to me and sparked all these ideas around what it entailed. It spoke to my fears of the future in this planet, to my rage against corporate greed, to my love for nature and to my fear for an entire future generation/the thought of having children.

“who’ll dance at the break of dawn, when the heat’s begun, when our mother’s gone?

last chance! every living thing, every breathing being, everything that’s green

it’s not just a human’s world, just a human’s world just a human’s world

we’ve got to reverse this flight for our future child, for continued life”

Nico had produced the marching like beat and once we had the verse and “terminal woes” phrase we knew there was an idea worth developing. In a thrift store, I’d picked up a record of Ravi Shankar playing his Concerto for Sitar and Orchestra alongside the London Symphony Orchestra. It played on repeat and I think some of it’s spirit seeped into the vocal melodies on this song (and some guitars in other songs on the record.)

Check out "Terminal Woes"

Dylan Cover #620 John Mayer "Like A Rolling Stone" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's artists, John Mayer performing a live cover of "Like A Rolling Stone"

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover:
The song that launched a true revolution, with an opening snare drum like a dead man's last pistol shot baby. "Like A Rolling Stone" is mega in all fashions, Dylan is accusatory, mad, feed up, zoned out, poetic, rambling and always moving with he sound as the track is large and in charge even today. One of the Bard's top 3 songs any which way you break them down, Like A Rolling Stone has been covered by a ton of people and it (usually) always kicks ass.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
Having grown from TMZ focal point pop artist to now revered Dead & Co lead guitarist, Mayer has run the gamut musically and is still growing. Our only time seeing him we were really impressed with his playing...until he tried to cover Jimi Hendrix and then we thought this was a kid with a lot of talent who needed to age a bit in all aspects. He has now done that admirably.

Thoughts on Cover:
An upbeat, energetic, well delivered live take on the tune, that features some excellent solo's from Mayer.

Dylan Cover #619 Beth Orton & M. Ward - "Buckets of Rain"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by Beth Orton & M. Ward playing "Buckets of Rain"

Thoughts on Original:
From our first take on a cover of this tune:
Dylan's mid career masterpiece closes out with this song and to me it always seemed tacked on whimsically.  After going through a ton of raw emotion with "Idiot Wind" and other tunes, Blood on the Tracks finishes with this ditty.  Honestly never one of my favorites, it acted more as a palate cleanser and a sweet one at that.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
Have reviewed M Ward here before and have enjoyed Beth Orton when we have heard her as well.

Thoughts on Cover
:
A gorgeous acoustic duet for this cover, which changes the meaning of the original lyrics by having two distinct voices sing it. Excellent all around.

RIP Kerry 'Fatman' Hunter

Unfortunately Kerry 'Fatman' Hunter was killed by a drunk driver in New Orleans.

Sad news:

RtBE dug Fatman having seen him play with The New Orleans Nightcrawlers and New Birth Brass Band

We loved the Nightcrawlers album that they won a Grammy for and had a song dedicated to Hunter. It was titled Atmosphere and we rated it as one of our favorites of 2020. Here is his song:

Dylan Cover #618 Jessica Rhaye and the Ramshackle Parade "Blowin' In The Wind"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by Jessica Rhaye and the Ramshackle Parade playing "Blowin' In The Wind"

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this song:
The classic Dylan song, if you asked 100 people to name you the first Bob Dylan song they thought of, or his best known song, I am guessing 95-99 of them would answer "Blowin' In The Wind".  It is an epic, vital song in the history of recorded music. The lyrics tell a stirring tale, the melody is enchanting, it is pretty spot on perfect, and when it originally came out if announced to the world the greatness that was/is/always will be Bob Dylan.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
This is our first time hearing Jessica Rhaye and the Ramshackle Parade

Thoughts on Cover:
A safe and pretty cover of the tune that is much closer to the Peter Paul and Mary version than the original, but fun none the less.

New Video/Single from LiveKill "Scum of my Life"

The South Florida based death metal outfit LiveKill have released a new video/single, "Scum of my Life"

About the song, guitarist/producer John Snell states:

"This was the first song I could hear the guitar riff in my head before I played it. A lot of songs speed up half-way into the song. I did the opposite with "Scum Of My Life" slowing it down, letting it breathe and creating the emotion that draws you in. It’s one of those songs that when you finish you can’t wait for everyone to experience it."

Dylan Cover #617 Huntley and Niall Horan "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a cover by Huntley and Niall Horan  playing "Knockin' On Heaven's Door'"

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this tune:
The song that seems to have been covered by every and any one, but when originally recorded it it was featured on one of Dylan's oddest releases yet. A straight ahead mournful number that just seems to work somehow and like a lot of Dylan tunes has grown beyond it's humble beginning. The song is really a testament to his amazing songwriting which can seem simple at times. The tune has invaded culture (possibly because of all the covers) and I would wager it is one of Dylan's most widely known tunes...

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
This is RtBE's first time hearing both Huntley and Niall Horan as we are not Voice fans.

Thoughts on Cover:
A totally fine, straight ahead cover of the song that doesn't do a whole lot, except deliver the tune.

Regarding the song frontman Johnny Marriott says:

“We wanted to subvert the tired rock n roll "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead!" mentality and celebrate both the million mile an hour touring lifestyle and, well, being in our own beds, too! When you're on the road for months you pine for home. When you're at home you're always thinking ahead to the next tour. To us, this is the ultimate" Intermittent Fast Living" song. Singalong, high energy, filterless reality. Sex, drugs, booze, snooze. Perfect!”

Album Review: Gruff Rhys - Sadness Sets Me Free

Gruff Rhys
Sadness Sets Me Free
*** out of *****

Collectively, this will be the 25th album from the Welsh artist Gruff Rhys who has spanned the globe with his sounds, inspiration, and songwriting. His newest effort is titled Sadness Sets Me Free as the music and lyrics/vocals have a tug of war between optimism and pessimism; the title of the record certainly does the songs justice.
