New Bootsy Collins Album Out This Fall

The bass legend Bootsy Collins has a new, guest star studded album arriving this October and it is lining up to be funky as all hell.
Glide Magazine has the full breakdown, but needless to say we are very excited for this release as some of our favorites (Chuck D, Buckethead, Bernie Worrell) are coming together to play with Bootzilla himself.

This is also a bass players dream lineup as one track alone has Victor Wooten, Stanley Clarke, Manou Gallo and Alissia Benveniste...that is a TON of funky bass. We will be looking forward to this one and will be grabbing the double vinyl. You can pre-order the album and peep the first single below:

Dylan Cover #290 Michael J Fillmore "Romance In Durango"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by Michael J Fillmore playing "Romance In Durango"
Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover version of this song:
Containing the best opening line of any Dylan song (which places it high on the best opening line of any song ever) "Romance In Durango" is a movie played out over violins, words, dead bodies, love, adventure and life. A western tinged Dylan tune that talks about a horse taking him to Durango. A fantastic burst of creative songwriting and exhilarating playing it is a timelessly fantastic tune.
Cover:

Thoughts On Cover Artist:
Michael J Fillmore posts a few different songs to youtube. We have not heard of him before.
Thoughts On Cover:
This one really surprised us as the playing is truly topnotch and the singing is grand as well. We will be checking out Mr. Fillmore's other uploads.

Album Review: Jen Cloher - Jen Cloher

Jen Cloher
S/T
**** out of *****

A veteran and standout of Melbourne’s DIY music scene, Jen Cloher has been recording for years but things have flourshied recently. Anytime an established artist decides to release a Self-Titled album there is usually a major reason behind it, a shift in tone, a declartion of a new beginning or a sense of an artistic high point. On Jen Cloher, the artist seems to be touching on all of these fronts.

Recorded mostly live with minimal overdubs with a comfortable band of friends and like minded friends the disk has a relaxed feel to it, but never dips into melancholy, kept interesting by oft-kilter riffs and noisy flashes all around the lengthy lyrics and breathy vocals from Cloher.

The opener "Forget Myself" paints a paranoid picture around Patti Smith poems (a clear connection for Cloher) and a lonely lover as the players move in a later day Sonic Youth style ("Kool Thing" even gets a lyrical nod on "Kinda Biblical"). That bands smoother/lighter tones as well as the mellower Wilco is the reference point for the majority of the songs here including the softly swelling "Regional Echo". The nervous lyrics, angular tones and sense of intimacy draws the listener instantly in.

A standout number that combines all of these elements is "Sensory Memory". Slowly working up with Cloher's strumming, lyrically describing an intimate portrait of home life and living with a touring musician, balancing the mundane everyday home life, with the mundane toll of the road. The music swells and majestically soars to close, wrapping up gorgeously.

Another influence comes with "Analysis Paralysis" a seven minute plus ramble that cracks open the artist head lyrically and also pulls in a Velvet Underground motoring sense of rhythm and cool. "Shoegazers" is a screed against critics "Most critics are pussies who want to look cool/Those who can, they do/Those who can’t review" that has a meaty muscular riff while "The Great Australian Bite" drifts in a glorious feedback sea.

"Strong Woman" does exactly what it sets out to do, but could use an extra injection of energy/abandon while "Loose Magic" starts folksy and might have ended better that way rather than injecting drums and guitars out of key. However, those are minor quibbles with, what is in the end, an excellent album from an artist who has a lot to say and sounds damn good saying it.

Cloher has long been in a relationship with Courtney Barnett (who also plays guitar here) and while Barnett has specifically named Cloher in songs it is easy to infer that 90% of these lyrics here are directed to her but that can be left to others as the feelings of unease, nervousness and wondering are universal. Cloher has increased her angst and pumped up her electric sound, fitting like a glove into those Patti Smith poems she mentioned early on, creating a successfully engaging disk in her own right with this self titled effort.

It is of DocFell & Co. newest release Dust Bowl Heart. The Oklahoma group puts fourth a disk full of Country and Americana sounds and a few of the tracks stand out. "The Less I Know" is one of those that really works well from the band, the female vocals are also a nice touch through out.

Dylan Cover #289 Yokey "Girl From The North Courtney" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune comes from Yokey and it is his live cover of "Girl From The North Country"
Thoughts on Dylan's Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover version of this song:
A fun little number that connects Dylan with folk's past. I heard Simon and Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair" first when I was growing up so I have always been a bit more partial to that version of this old folk tune even though Dylan changed a bunch of stuff around (obviously) with his recording that appeared on The Freewheeling Bob Dylan. His duet with Johnny Cash that highlights Nashville Skyline is something else entirely, a major sonic effort that I love. On an album that saw so many massive tunes come flowing out of the bard this one can be overshadowed yet his first version of this track is just a sweet folk ditty that has aged very, very well.
Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
We have not heard of Yokey before, but here is self written bio from his website:
I am Adrian Burruto, the man behind Yokey; a solo music project which was created to explore the art of song. I simply enjoy making art. I work in my quasi-home studio out in Melbourne’s west toying with sounds and trying to organise them into songs. Just as the visual artist has a studio to experiment with colours and textures, I try to use the studio with a similar approach. Yokey is more commonly seen as live act which currently consists of me armed with my guitar, voice and a couple of stories.
Thoughts on Cover:
This is a gorgeous live acoustic cover. The song fits folk singers and Yokey does a hell of a job.

Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Spoon's Best Record

One of RtBE Favorites Spoon is celebrating a milestone in 2017, the 10th Anniversary of their best disk Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. We think this is their peak release, however it may have the worst album title of any disk ever released.
To celebrate, the band will release a remastered version of the album combined with their Get Nice! EP on vinyl October 20th.

RtBE loves this disk, we rated it 28th on our top 50 record's of the 00's list and still listen to it often. It is funny though we normally don't like remastering, which often just means making things louder, but compared to the excellent sound of They Want My Soul, Ga Ga etc sounds thinner and a touch weak so we would like to hear the changes.

We already pre-ordered the vinyl and can't wait to spin it. Until then, here are some tunes from the disk:

Angels & Vagabonds Working With Rescuebox

It is with great excitement that we can announce Angels & Vagabonds has worked with Rescuebox  to help raise awareness to their great cause.
If you are unaware of the company here is their about us:
In the summer of 2015, the founders of RescueBox came together to brainstorm new and unique ways to help give back to the animal rescue community. After founding several successful companies in the pet industry such as Coupaw.com, Doggyloot.com and the Animal Rescue Site, as well as collectively donating nearly 500,000 pounds of food to shelter animals in need, the itch to make an even bigger impact in the space would simply not go away.
Their final idea was simple. Create an exciting, easy way to give back that will delight pets and their parents.
Collectively, our team has years of experience catering to the needs of pets and their parents. We’ve built relationships with the best vendors and local distributors in the industry. Like you, we have high standards when it comes to the products that they spoil their pets with. With every RescueBox, subscribers will receive a curated box filled with high-quality toys, delicious treats, and other tail-wagging products that have been vetted by the pets of our team. The best part? Every delivery will feature a rescue story that wouldn’t be possible without the generous donation that your purchase provides. RescueBox is a special monthly delivery that both you and your pet can truly get excited and feel GOOD about.
Millions of animals are abused and abandoned every single year. The team at RescueBox is working hard every single day to reduce that number. We couldn’t do it without your help.

Love,
Team RescueBox
Angels & Vagabonds have worked with them to help get the message out as our music is featured in their newest pro-active marketing message. Please watch (and listen) to the video below and help out if you can, also if you enjoy the music feel free to download/stream it for free on our bandcamp site or below the video.

Album Review: Aesop Rock & Homeboy Sandman - Triple Fat Lice

Aesop Rock & Homeboy Sandman
Triple Fat Lice
*** out of *****

Here comes the third EP from the pairing of two excellent NYC MC's, Aesop Rock & Homeboy Sandman. Coming on the heels of 2015's Fat Lice and the follow up Lice Two in 2016 is the aptly named (and gross concept of) Triple Fat Lice.

While RtBE missed the sequel we are here to review the third installment and it is more of the same dexterity and fluid beats from the duo and their guest producers. Opening with computerized voices of a mother daughter combo finding lice comes "Pins and Needles" that is an old school introduction to the EP with a throwback to A Tribe Called Quest over skittering piano laced beats from Cohenbeats. If anything, the short track ends too early as it moves along with swaggering strides.

The whole EP is an ode to the Native Tongues as "Comfy" takes harsher lyrics and melds them with smooth soul sounds from producer Oh No. The funky groove gets deeper as Ben Boogz uses Best In Show samples around blaxplotation era guitar/bass lines while the MC's deal with commercialism and calories on the best overall track on this EP.

The lows are never that deep though as this whole collection, and everything this duo has ever produced, is high quality. "Yoohoo" is a bit disjointed with bullet fast rhymes not pairing that well with Quelle Chris's syrupy slow beats while" Panacea" works better to close the EP as M Slago incorpates crackling vinyl sound along with atmospheric swells to support the MC's as they roll along.

An overall successful outing that proves Aesop Rock and Homeboy Sandman are consistently professional and confident in their style and power, and no matter the producer the duo continue to stick around your head...well, like Lice.

Dylan Cover #288 The Skyriders "The Mighty Quinn" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by The Skyriders playing "The Mighty Quinn"

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this tune:
Not officially released until 1970's audience and critic defying Self-Portrait "Quinn The Eskimo" first found life with Manfred Mann, before a lot of the world heard Dylan sing it himself. It had been on The Basement Tapes though and lots of bootleggers, underground fans and admiring fellow artists got to bask it its rollicking glory. A fun old ride that makes everyone from children to adults smile. A favorite purely because it is one of the plain funnest songs in Dylan's catalog one of my personal highlights regarding the song has nothing to do with the playing, it has to do with what Dylan himself wrote about it in Chronicles:
"On the way back to the house I passed the local movie theater on Prytania Street, where The Mighty Quinn was showing. Years earlier, I had written a song called 'The Mighty Quinn' which was a hit in England, and I wondered what the movie was about. Eventually, I'd sneak off and go there to see it. It was a mystery, suspense, Jamaican thriller with Denzel Washington as the Mighty Xavier Quinn a detective who solves crimes. Funny, that's just the way I imagined him when I wrote the song 'The Mighty Quinn,' Denzel Washington."
Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
We have not heard of the The Skyriders before this post. They seem to be a German band and lead singer Petra Stokkamp- Ballin has posted a few other live covers from various bands
Thoughts on Cover:
It is a sped up version that contains a jammed out midsection and is an upbeat fun take for a live interpretation of the tune. A good way to start this summer Monday.

Dylan Cover #287 Raign "Knockin' On Heavens Door"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a cover by Raign playing "Knockin' On Heavens Door"
Thoughts on Original:
The song that seems to have been covered by anyone, but when originally recorded it it was on one of Dylan's oddest releases yet. A straight ahead mournful number that just seems to work, it has invaded culture (possibly because of all the covers) and I would wager is one of Dylan's most widely known tunes...
Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
RtBE has not be clued into Raign before. She is Rachel Rabin a singer songwriter from England.
Thoughts on Cover:
This is an overly dramtaic version, and for any other Dylan track it would feel overwrought, however for "Knockin' On Heavens Door" it is par for the course. The drama works well and while it is a bit slow, again it works for this track.

Remembering Jerry Garcia

On this day way back in 1942 Jerome Garcia was born and as we have done in the past we wanted to take a second to remember Jerry in the best possible way, by his music.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/brentdpayne
In past years we have focused on full shows from The grateful dead, but this year we wanted to post a few Jerry Garcia Band songs. Enjoy them on this great day and always as RtBE will be highlighting Garcia more this month...oh and also, Happy Birthday Meg!
