Dylan Cover #501 David Sanborn & Michael Kamen & Eric Clapton "Knockin' On Heavens Door"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a cover by David Sanborn, Michael Karmen and Eric Clapton playing "Knockin' On Heaven's Door".

This month we have a special focus on artists who will be playing the 2021 Jazzfest in New Orleans. Today we highlight David Sanborn who played the Festival Sunday the 10th

Once again Jazzfest is canceled due to Covid. Hopefully it happens in April-May of 2022.

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this tune:
The song that seems to have been covered by every and any one, but when originally recorded it it was featured on one of Dylan's oddest releases yet. A straight ahead mournful number that just seems to work somehow and like a lot of Dylan tunes has grown beyond it's humble beginning. The song is really a testament to his amazing songwriting which can seem simple at times. The tune has invaded culture (possibly because of all the covers) and I would wager is one of Dylan's most widely known tunes...

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
David Sanborn is a smooth jazz saxophonist who is incredibly successful playing on a number of well known tunes.

Thoughts on Cover:
This is a wacky one, but this is a wacky year for Jazzfest so why not highlight it?  From Lethal Weapon 2, in the scene when apparently Riggs died...even though (spoiler alert) he was in Lethal Weapon 3 and 4...hmmm? More of a instrumental motif based around Dylan's tune with Clapton singing the chorus, but the best part is probably Sanborn's sax lines.

Live Streams: John Waters in conversation with Jim Jarmusch

With live music on lock down (like everything else currently in New York City) live streams and old concerts have become essential for live music junkies like RtBE. While this current state of pandemic separation is in order we will highlight various shows/streams/virtual events for your viewing and listening pleasure and you can always check out or weekly Full Show Friday series for concerts from the past. Please support the artists any which way you can.

Today we highlight:  John Waters in conversation with Jim Jarmusch

Two great indie artists with film as their predominate medium, have a conversation tonight over at Murmrr at 7:30PM:

To get in the mood here is "Doin Time For Being Young" from John Waters biggest film, Cry-Baby and our favorite music from any Jim Jarmusch film, Neil Young's amazing work from the super underrated Dead Man. Both films oddly staring Johnny Deep, I wonder if they will talk about him tonight:

MST3K Returns Friday! A Look Back Part 2: Our Favorites

It is pretty amazing that one of the smartest television ideas/written shows is returning this Friday with new episodes on Netflix. Mystery Science Theater 3000 gets a full on reboot on the streaming service starting, April 14th.
Original creator Joel Hodgson did a crowd sourcing campaign to get the Satellite of Love back into space, to be tormented by bad movies and it was wildly successful. For those not aware of the original show, the gimmick was bad movies (really bad movies) would play and a human with two robot sidekicks would make quick fire sarcastic retorts, 70's cultural references and intelligent quips that you had to really think about at the screen and with the viewer. The humor was all over the map, from fart jokes to grand sociological statements.

That may sound like high praise, but the show clearly took a lot from the great Monty Python in that they played up to their audience always expecting them to be smart enough to get the jokes, they did win a Peabody after all.

Yesterday we focused on the shows classic episodes. Those are pretty rock solid and almost all fans would agree those five are their most known/beloved episodes, however everybody has their personal choices for various reasons.

For instance, one episode that just missed this list is Time of The Apes a Japanese TV show cut together and then showed as a movie somehow. I use the quote "I Don't Care!" on a daily basis, and every time I watch the beginning of that episode I still laugh:

There are countless moments like these so click on that read more button and dive in...we got movie sign!!!

MST3K Returns Friday! A Look Back Part 1: The Classics

It is pretty amazing that one of the smartest television ideas/written shows is returning this Friday with new episodes on Netflix. Mystery Science Theater 3000 gets a full reboot on the streaming service starting April 14th.
Original creator Joel Hodgson did a crowd sourcing campaign to get the Satellite of Love back in the stratosphere to be tormented by bad movies and it was wildly successful. For those not aware of the original show, the gimmick was bad movies (really bad movies) would play and a human with two robot sidekicks would make quick fire sarcastic retorts, 70's cultural references and intelligent quips. The humor was all over the map, from fart jokes to grand sociological statements.

That may sound like high praise, but the show clearly took a lot from the great Monty Python in that they played up to their audience, always expecting them to be smart enough to get the jokes, they did win a Peabody after all.

There is also a direct musical connection (not including the countless musical references during the shows themselves) as Joel mentioned in past interviews that he got the idea for the look of the main scenes from an insert picture on Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

Over the last year, we've had some extra time on our hands and the show we've watched the most without question is MST3K, they are constantly funny and immensely re-watchable. Thanks to the amazing fans there are tons of episodes online.

To commemorate the return of the show we wanted to take some time on RtBE to talk up our favorites. These posts are not meant to be comprehensive, you can go to other sites for more info as the internet is full of them. We are however dedicating two posts it, which will highlight 10 episodes total. Today we will focus on The Classic Episodes, tomorrow our Personal Favorite's. Click that read more below to dive into Part 1: The Classics

Album Review: Miss Sharon Jones! Soundtrack

Hey all, got a new review up @glidemag which you can read Right C'here!!!
It is of the soundtrack of the new documentary film Miss Sharon Jones! The soundtrack takes live tracks from Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings from throughout the bands amazing career. We have written about the band before, but still don't think they get enough credit for basically creating that retro-soul sound that seems to be everywhere right now.

The trailer for the film is below as well as a song from the soundtrack. Read the review and enjoy the film.

Friday Funday - Howlin' For this to be made into a full length

The Black Keys album Brothers was my favorite from 2010 and it keeps giving in 2011.  Not just with it's joyous tunes that sound killer on vinyl but with some pretty kick arse videos....If you haven't peeped "Howlin' For You" yet, you need too...this NEEDS to be made into a full length, check it:

Holy 70's Thrill ride Batman, that is pure BOOSH!  Easily the front runner for video of the year...

I love seeing the duo create a mini movie and act poorly as Mariachi serenader's, why don't more bands do this?!?  Then again this is top quality stuff that few can pull off.  For example:

The Flying Tomato Shaun White getting strangled with a bike chain post-coitus by the leather clad seductress and brutal assassin Tricia Helfer, what is better then that?!?!  How about Sir Todd Bridges

as the ass kicking priest who drops the best line in the mini flick, "I am pretty sure God would consider it a sin not to glorify that ass!" can't be topped right?  Well maybe it can...by that ass in question; the uber-babe and hysterical tweeter Diora Baird

(Follow that broad she is funny and sexy)

Muscle cars, Top Hats, White Stallions, Swords, Guns, Knifed Eyes leading to Eye Patches,  Babes, Corbin F'n Bernsen and LAS TECLAS DE NEGRO.  This shit is bumpin' b, give it a go and support all involved, lets get this piece made into a full length...or I will choke a chupacabra with my bare hands!!!

Enjoy the weekend all.

Movie Timeout: Exit Through the Gift Shop

We here at RTBE, usually stick to what we know best, but today we are taking a Movie Timeout.  Vince over at the excellently hysterical Filmdrunk recently directed his readers to an interview with the creator of the most engaging movie (and probably the best) RTBE saw last year (and Filmdrunks movie of the year)...Exit Through the Gift Shop.
Years ago my friend Paul introduced me to Banksy who at the time was posting his art in museums:

I was fascinated by him then and shouldn't have been surprised how much I loved this documentary now.  I don't want to give too much away about the film, but will simply say, see it.  It is completely worth your time if you love graffiti, hate street art, have no idea who Banksy even is...none of that matters.  It is an amazing film that gets you to think about art/marketing/commercialism and the twisted realm everything populates at some point.   Here are 5 minutes of the film...but find the rest yourself:
Anyway, after you watch the whole thing, go read this interview with the films creator at All These Wonderful Things.  I am in the camp that the whole thing is 100% real...I don't think you can write things like that, shit just happens.  However, I have had conversations with those who disagree wholeheartedly thinking it 100% Bullshit, you be the judge.  This is a doozy of a film and worth your time, the more people I can bump into and have conversations about it the better, so hop too it.
