Happy 10th Anniversary to Bop English - Constant Bop

Today we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Bop English's, Constant Bop

The only record (that RtBE knows of) released by White Denim frontman James Petralli under this alter ego and now that White Denim is basically a solo project, it is doubtful anymore Bop English albums show up!  RtBE loves this album, rating it as our favorite of 2015 and it made our list of the favorites of the past decade

Dylan Cover #637 Eric Bettencourt & Band "She Belongs to Me" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by Eric Bettencourt & Band playing "She Belongs To Me"

Thoughts on Original:
The first song in this series was a different cover of this track, here is what I wrote about it then and still feel the same way:
This is a gem of a song, a twisted tale that entwines beauty and deceit, darkness and sparkling Egyptian Red Rings. One of Dylan's best in it's mystery, elusiveness and bitter biting undertones; really pure Dylan and one of his all time classics.  Loved it when I first heard it, still love it today.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
This is our first time listening to Eric Bettencourt & Band. Bettencourt is an Austin, TX based artist. His top notch band this go around is Richard Corson - Electric Guitar ||| Pete Genova - Bass ||| Charles C. Gagne - Drums.

Thoughts on Cover
A really cool, upbeat, jammy arrangement of the classic tune with great singing, guitar work and groove. Two guitar solos are dynamite as the band gets loose around the lyrics. A fantastic cover and yet another reason we keep this series running, constant pleasant surprises.  Happy Monday.

Dylan Cover #572 Kezia Gill "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's artist, Kezia Gill performing a live cover of "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight"

Thoughts on Dylan Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this tune:
A simple little number coming off of John Wesley Harding it discards the lyrical wizardry for a down home spin.  We are rewarded with easy bliss, not often found in Dylan tunes. The emotions displayed by the singer here are heartfelt, hearty and easy going, just like the tune as a whole. Always a pleasant ride, bring that bottle over here...

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
This is RtBE's first time hearing Kezia who is an England based, country music artist. More info here

Thoughts on Cover
A straight ahead acoustic cover that stakes it's claim with Gill's fluttering vocals that can soar and vibrate wonderfully. A fine live cover.

Each January RtBE does a Jazz showcase and judging by the clicks, people just aren't as into it as we are. To make up for that, in February we go pop during our Full Show Friday series to blatantly attract page views.

This week we showcase Adele from 2015 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City:

Best Live Albums of the 2010's

Live music is religion. Capturing that in-the-moment feeling can be a tricky proposition though for every Live at The Regal or Live at The Isle of Wight, there are thousands of Love You Live's. For the majority of live albums are cash grabs meant to have people pay for shows that are not as good as their memories are. That said in the era of streaming, more live events are being captured and released so "official" album labels are starting to fade...

In looking back at this decade, it wasn't the best for albums as a whole which (we mentioned already in our Top 50 of 2010-2019), but things were much more barren when it came to live albums from the past decade. These aren't archival releases (which there were many great ones this decade), these are from current acts that recorded a live album and released it in the last ten years.

Most of these records on this list are fine, but far from life changing, however the topper is one of our favorite releases of the decade so RtBE wanted to do a post on it and needed some honorable mentions. Feel free to let us know about any we missed in the comments below.

As with all of our lists on RtBE these are meant to be conversation starters, not the be all end all final word.

Dylan Cover #406 Andy & Renee & Hard Rain "Sweetheart Like You" Live 2015

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a cover by Andy & Renee & Hard Rain playing "Sweetheart Like You"

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this song:
All of the songs on Infidels  stuck around to long in the Bards brain (which we talked about before). While "Jokerman" overwhelms as a rambling waterfall of a song the first time you hear it, "Sweetheart Like You" is clear evidence of that fact that things were left to simmer on the stove longer then needed. It is a mix of condescension, sexy, sexist, insecure and scattered. In fact those things make for an amazing Dylan tune, but in this case I don't feel it really adds up to a classic or much of a very good song at all.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
This is our first time coming across Andy & Renee & Hard Rain. Turns out they have a podcast on Dylan though so we may have to dig into them more.

Thoughts on Cover:
A damn fine cover of this lesser played Dylan tune. Tight, well played and sung with gusto. Excellent all around.

Also it needs to be mentioned that with the USA's current political climate more than ever this couplet from the song hits home:

Some months our Full Show Friday's will focus on specific artistsyearsvenues, festivals or some combo of it all. This month we focus on sets from Bonnaroo over the years.

Last week we posted a headliner we don't care for much. This week we post a late night show for a band we dig.

When we first got into RTJ was on RTJ2 which we reviewed and rated highly in our year end round up. We caught them live not long after that and loved it. We also dug their most recent release and rated it pretty high as well.

Dylan Cover #327 Mulholland "Wallflower" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's artists, Mulholland doing a live cover of "Wallflower"

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this tune:
Written in 1971 but not available to the ears until twenty years after the fact on the amazing Bootleg Vol 1-3, "Wallflower" is a sweet simple ditty that captures Bob in his folk/country phase of Self Portrait and New Morning. While not his deepest or most intense song it is a fine relaxed number that waltzes wonderfully light and free...getting naughty at the finish as well.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
RtBE has not come across Mulholland before. They are an Americana/Folk group from York England who fluctuated between five piece and two piece, they are a three piece here. You can find a bunch of videos from recent releases on their youtube channel

Thoughts on Cover:
This is a really fun live take with strong vocals and violin. The group even goes a step further by improvising a lyrical verse in the song. While it isn't mind altering it is an excellent take and one that would have been a joy to catch in a live setting.

Full Show Friday: Mavis Staples @ Museum of Making Music Carlsbad, CA 2015

These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...This week...Mavis Staples!

This week we shine a light on an American legend as Mavis Staples and her band take center stage for an hour of tunes. The soulful mix of gospel rock, funk and roots rock is infectious. We caught her on this tour opening for Bob Dylan out in Queens and last year we caught her with this lineup open once again for Bob Dylan. We should also share our lover for her Jeff Tweedy produced album even rating it high in our year end review.

On this night of music covers from The Talking Heads and Parliament Funkadelic are sprinkled in with originals for this great set. Not pro shot or pro sound, but pretty damn close...Enjoy:

This week we are going with one of the men who brought jazz back into the cool zone as Kamasi Washington performs The Epic live in downtown LA in 2015. While there is no doubt Kamasi has brought the spotlight back around for "in the know" music fans back towards Jazz, RtBE's personal taste leans more towards his contemporary who we showcased last week. Washington is damn good though and for fans of adventurous music who are hesitant to jump into jazz this is great place to try it out.

This is Jazz Night in America on NPR so you get an introduction and some amazing background. Needless to say, Pro Shot, Pro Sound, with setlist and players below. Enjoy:

Jazz Night In America features Kamasi Washington and the music of The Epic at its release party, and in its full glory. From the Regent Theater in Downtown L.A., Washington presents his new album with his working band, a choir, a string section and plenty of special guests.

Starting this 2018 off with some love for the bass. One of the best to ever pluck the strings, Marcus Miller and his band is the focus of our first Full Show Friday in Jazzy January. Miller is a Jazz legend and a virtuoso, but this set manages to stay fluid and enjoyable for any fan of tunes. The full set list is below and it is great as he riffs on both Dylan and Miles, not a bad twosome.

This is a great one, Pro-shot, Pro Sound. Enjoy:

With the holidays upon us, we figured we would get in the weird progressive metal spirit this year. What the hell? We are about to board a train to Albany so let's use the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's 2015 show at The Knick (it will never have another name for RtBE).

The odd thing about this band? Parents LOVE them. this group sells out arenas everywhere and bless them for it. So head-bang for Jesus and Santa or whatever with this Multi Camera Shot, Excellent Sounding (c'mon it is the Knick, great sound) recording. Enjoy:

Multi-camera mix full show captured in 1080p HD on the 2015 The Ghosts of Christmas Eve Tour TSO East. Captured from section 1, row A & the balcony at the Times Union Center, Albany, NY on December 13, 2015 at 7:30pm - edited and authored by Frank Anzalone.

This is turning out to be a good month of Full Show Friday's as we have a pro-shot, pro-sound Sleater-Kinney show from 2015 this week on tap. We loved their come back album and rated it high in our best of the year for 2015. While we weren't super pumped on the live album from the tour, this live video is killer. Thanks to NPR for posting it and capturing a great night of music from the classic band.

Photo From Here
Every April we have a special showcase for bands who are playing this years Jazzfest in NOLA. Today we will focus on Dumpstaphunk who will be playing the Acura Stage Saturday May 6th.

We decided to start this year with one of the best local NOLA acts who will be playing in the big fest and probably popping up around town throughout the two weekends, Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk

We have seen them a bunch and reviewed them often, really enjoying their live show as well as their last album which almost made our top ten list in 2013. Whenever we can catch them we will as they blend, funk, soul, rock, jamband exploration, Cajun spices, and just about everything else. In fact if there is a draw back it is probably that the band could use an editor of styles, but in the live setting they sure as shit know how to get down.

The players all will play multiple instruments and sing (lead and backups) and approach the stage like a family (which they are). This show is from 2015's LEAF Festival in Asheville, North Carolina.
While it is without our favorite drummer that the band had employed (the amazing Nikki Glaspie) it still is a hot set and even includes The Steel Town Horns early plus the fantastic Preservation Hall Jazz Band mid set. Lots of guests join this set as Roosevelt Collier pops up for a take on Zepplin's "Ramble On"as well.

The core of the group though, Tony Hall, Ivan Neville, Ian Neville, Nick Daniels III and Alvin Ford Jr. are tight when needed and loose when it calls for it over the course of this short (for them) festival set. All of them are top notch pro players who are captured here with Pro-Video, and Pro-Sound. So press play below and kick off this month of Full Show Friday's correctly. Enjoy:
