Live Review: The Who - 8/30/25 Madison Square Garden, NYC

The Who
8/30/25 Madison Square Garden NYC

On a pleasant summer Saturday Night in New York City, rock and roll legends The Who played Madison Square Garden on their supposed farewell tour titled The Song Is Over. Before the band started up Pete Towshend stated that The Who had played MSG 36 times and that this would "probably" be the last time, so the door is still open to a return.

Live Review: The Who - Madison Square Garden 5/26/22

Hey all, got a review up @glidemag which you can read Right C'here!

It is of The Who's live show on Thursday May 26th at MSG in NYC.

I went in not knowing setlists or what The Who Two were doing this tour and was simply blown away. RtBE have written about The Who in our Masters series and hold them in super high regard, but seeing them live these days has not been a major priority...this show might have changed that.

Starting with a half hour straight of Tommy and ending with Quadrophenia?! 8,395 person orchestra??! Amazing. Daltrey was in fine voice and Pete was engaged throughout, this was a killer night of wide ranging rock.

Support the band, catch them live, read the review and peep some video below:

Album Review: The Who - WHO

The Who
WHO
*** out of *****

What hits the listener on The Who's first album of new material in almost thirteen years is that this sounds like a proper Who record which is a surprise as only Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey remain from the band's hey days and they recorded separately with a host of studio musicians/friends contributing to that sound. The second thing that stands out is how well Daltrey's voice has recovered as he is in fine form propelling this collection of songs forward on that patented Who overblown rock and roll sound. The third is that it is a pretty solid collection of Who songs and a worthy addition to the bands catalog, while not coming close to their heyday, but still worlds beyond their last release of new music, the laughable Endless Wire.

'The Who Two' are both staring at seventy five years old and have no need for new music but Townshend has always been one of the more astute rockers capturing a time/moment/feeling and being able to lyrically express it through Daltrey's tough guys vocals. Now he faces old age as a rocker, impotent at times, disgusted at others while facing mortality.

While clearly not a rock opera, the album it is thematic in that growing old sense. "Rockin' In Rage" is the core centerpiece with classic Who tense string passages, pianos and cymbals supporting the lyrics. Opener "All This Music Must Fade" also expertly grapples with being out of touch and old, using ooh's and ah's around dynamite synth work from Benmont Tench, fantastic Townshend strumming and Pino Palladino/Zak Starkey low end work. "Break The News" successfully looks at old love and pain while "I'll Be Back" goes a step further as Townshend takes over lead vocals to declare he will be back for reincarnation to visit his love around folk rock complete with harmonicas and torrents of lyrics that at time seems cluttered, a touch sappy, but honest.

The Who never really did the blues, they rawk, but the music on first single "Ball and Chain" grooves around piano, meaty riffs, massive Starkey hits, and odd lyrics protesting injustice of Guantanamo. "I Don't Want To Get Wise" starts marching around Carla Azar's drumming, Tench's synths and some of Daltrey's strongest vocals while "Hero Ground Zero" musically fits right in The Who's mid 70's wheelhouse.

More of a mixed bag is "Detour" which throws it back to the Who's earliest days but gets scattered along the way, the new wave on "Beads on One String" and "Street Song" both lack a proper punch, but all have moments that remind that this is one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

This is not your classic must hear Who of Keith Moon and John Entwistle, yet this album is a fine late career entry into the bands catalog. At this point WHO will probably serve as proud final note for their studio recording career; it is an album that they and their fans can be proud of.

NOLA Jazzfest 2020, Artist Predictions

The lineup for the 2019 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival will be announced tomorrow but RtBE got the early scoop...

Actually no we don't...but since it is fun to predict, lets look into the crystal ball and guess who will be and who should be playing.

We will exclude the brass bands and local acts (even though they are truly the main reason we go) including nationally touring NOLA acts like Irma Thomas, Kermit Ruffins, Big Sam,  GalacticTrombone Shorty all the Brass Bands who will all be there.

Also we are obviously skipping the great jazz, blues and gospel acts who will be the foundation of the festival in their respective tents. Lets just talk about the bigger national touring artists for now....We will focus more on locals closer to the show.
To get in the southern festive NOLA mood, here is a great video done by Jeronimo Acero that my friend the fantastic Lu Brow sent north to warm me up during the winter.
Now on to the predictions....

Dylan Cover #394 Pete Townshend "Corrina, Corrina" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by Pete Townshend performing "Corrina, Corrina"
Thoughts on Original:
Early Dylan took folk songs that had been out there forever, placed sometimes small, sometimes large changes onto them and re-wrote the suckers making history. "Corrina, Corrina" is one of those which showed up on The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. Originally recorded by Bo Carter in 1928 the tune has had tons of covers, everyone from The Mississippi Sheiks to Blind Lemon Jefferson, each adding their own flair to the number. Bob's rendition is a short jaunty tune which has a good beat, bounces around and features Dylan's harmonica, acoustic and great vocals. Not deep, just pretty and sweet.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
We are celebrating The Who all month in our Masters series. They are one of RtBE's all-time favorites. This is Pete solo, which is pretty damn great.

Thoughts on Cover:
Pete explains why he covers this song at the beginning of the video, very very cool. I wish we could hear these explanations for all of the people we have featured in this cover series which is now pushing 400!  The discussion at the beginning is even cooler than the song, which is delicate, fragile twinkling take on the folk tune.

For September The Masters Focuses on The Who

Here is a show from the fellows from 1981 with Kenny Jones playing drums. While this version of the Who is not our favorite Jones did a solid job and this show is a burner, just listen to the Ox's bass, killer. They mix up some versions of favorites here, "Can't Explain" is one example, and things aren't as bad as Roger's hair do would lead you to believe.

The Masters: The Who - Best Live Albums

RtBE loves listening to new music and prides itself on keeping tabs on up and coming artists but in 2019 we are also going to have a monthly spotlight on legendary artists who we really love. We are calling this series The Masters. It will focus on the best albums, live records, transcendent shows and other odd ways we appreciate the artists and their contribution to music, culture and our formation.

For September The Masters focuses on The Who.

A band that was a force of nature. In their prime The Who were a must catch live act. From the magical timing of the sun coming up at Woodstock as if it was a light show to the story about Monterrey Pop and the rift between Jimi Hendrix and The Who which is a classic...
Townshend says “I’ve heard Roger talk about it as a jam session, but it wasn’t a jam session. It was just Jimi on a chair playing at me. Playing at me like ‘Don’t f—k with me, you little sh-t.’”
The musical quarrel came down to Townshend’s insecurity over The Who playing after Jimi Hendrix at Monterey, a gig that he considered to be a “critical concert.” Attempting to negotiate with Jimi didn’t go well, as Hendrix said “that’s not what you really mean. What you really mean is that you don’t want me to go first. You want to be first up there with the guitar smashing,” to which Townshend replied “Jimi, I swear, that’s not what it’s about.”
In the end, the discussion cooled down and Hendrix suggested a coin toss to determine who would go first and The Who came out on the winning side of that toss.
Watching Hendrix’s performance later from the crowd with Mama Cass, she told Townshend, “he’s stealing your act” and Townshend said “no, he’s not stealing my act – he’s doing my act.” Explaining further, Townshend says “for me, it was an act and for him, it was something else. It was an extension of what he was doing.”

They have memorable live moments, both good and bad and as a band continue to tour with two of the original members. While their hey day is clearly behind them, their recent past gets some love on our live albums list below. RtBE was not alive to catch the group as a four piece but we have caught them a few times as well as variations of their work and love every minute of it.

So let's get to their top five live albums below. As a reminder this list is meant to start conversations, not end them....

The Who Release New Song, Brand New Full Length Coming in November

Just like last month, when our Masters spotlight artist Neil Young announced a brand new Crazy Horse album, this months artists, The Who, announce their first album in thirteen Years.

WHO (cleverly titled) is the first record of new material since the awful Endless Wire and while RtBE loves the band, we do not have high hopes for this full length. Townshend talked about the album:
“This album is almost all new songs written last year, with just two exceptions. There is no theme, no concept, no story, just a set of songs that I (and my brother Simon) wrote to give Roger Daltrey some inspiration, challenges and scope for his newly revived singing voice. Roger and I are both old men now, by any measure, so I’ve tried to stay away from romance, but also from nostalgia if I can. I didn’t want to make anyone feel uncomfortable. Memories are OK, and some of the songs refer to the explosive state of things today. I made new home studio demos of all these songs in the summer of 2018 using a wide collection of instruments old and new. We started recording as The Who in March 2019, and have finished now in late August just in time to make some vinyl………maybe even some cassettes……ready for release in November”.

The first song "Ball & Chain" has been released and you can listen to it:

Full Show Friday: The Who Live in Houston, TX 1975

These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...This week...The Who!
For September The Masters Focuses on The Who

This is a killer recording from The Who's 1975 tour in support of their Who By Numbers album, That one didn't make our top five studio albums and only three songs from this night come from that (and only one from Quadrophenia) as the tour was more of a Tommy Revisited adventure as the movie just came out.

This is a ripping show from Houston. Just listen to Entwistle's bass on "I Can't Explain"...loose booty rockin'. The band is in fine form. I don't think it is pro shot, but sound is dynamite. Full set list below, Enjoy:

Dylan Cover # 392 Roger Daltrey & Wilko Johnson "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a cover by Wilko Johnson & Roger Daltrey performing "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?"

Thoughts on Original:
(From the first time in this series we tackled a cover of this song)
A rambling transitional tune from Dylan as he moved from folk to his rock phase backed by The Hawks and push that wild thin mercury sound which Dylan was just starting to dabble with. Perhaps because of it's rarity, not appearing on any official album it is always a joy to listen to when it pops up, but there are better tracks in this vein such as the unfinished "She's Your Lover Now" but that is a whole separate post....

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
We are celebrating The Who all month in our Masters series. They are one of RtBE's all-time favorites. That covers half of this duo with Roger Daltrey and Wilko Johnson did some cool stuff with Dr. Feelgood, but those guys don't make our Masters series.

Thoughts on Cover:
A pumped up rollicking version with Daltery's stout vocals, a shaking tambourine and jangle. A lot like the original in the end, a fairly straight ahead cover.

Full Show Friday: The Who Live @ Monterrey Pop 6/18/67

We search the murky back waters of youtube to find full concerts and post them to the site weekly, come back every seven days to help us celebrate Full Show Friday's. These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...This week...The Who!

For September The Masters Focuses on The Who

Let's get started at the beginning, well not the exact beginning, but the show which broke the band for American audiences. Monterrey Pop changed popular music in 1967 and The Who were one of the major acts who smashed down the door.

We have the full set, with no video, and then a few clips of the band playing the opening and closing numbers with full visual destructive action. Enjoy:

The Masters: The Who - Best Studio Albums

RtBE loves listening to new music and prides itself on keeping tabs on up and coming artists but in 2019 we are also going to have a monthly spotlight on legendary artists who we really love. We are calling this series The Masters. It will focus on the best albums, live records, transcendent shows and other odd ways we appreciate the artists and their contribution to music, culture and our formation.
For September The Masters focuses on The Who.

When RtBE hears the term 'Rock Band' (not rock and roll mind you) The Who are always the band who jumps to mind. The group were heavy/hard before there was punk/metal. They were over the top, before there was prog. They were in touch with their feelings like folkies, but would make you start a mosh before that was a thing and they never backed down from a fight.

Pete Townshend, Roger Daltry, John Entwistle and Keith Moon were the perfect rock quartet.  Each played their roles, were amazing at their craft and produced some of the greatest albums in rock history. They were not prolific in the studio, but each record we talk about today could be in talks for best ever.

Unlike a lot of other British Invasion acts, The Who didn't owe very much to the blues masters that came before them, they were much more influenced by the early American rock and roll inspired by those artists, almost a second generation influence. Unlike the Beatles and the Stones they kept the "roll" out of it and went more for a blasting, the already mentioned metal/punk/prog approach to their songs as they grew as a unit.

Townshend as a songwriter also tapped into constant themes of childhood abuse, teenage angst and mental confusion. The best part about his songs is that he somehow managed to keep a sense of humor about him and his lyrics. The Who were fun, deep, exciting and a kick ass band so let's dig into their top 5 studio albums....As a reminder, this list is meant to start discussions, not end them....

Year In Review 2017- Favorite Live Show

The live show is a slippery thing. There are lots of variables at play, most having little to do with the performance itself. Does the venue have enough bathrooms? Is it going to rain? What day of the week is it on? Did I have a shitty day at work before hand? Did tickets cost waaay too much? All of this effects one's opinion of a live show before the band even tunes up and with reason, but when the stars align, there is no place RtBE would rather be than in the moment of magic occurring spontaneously from the stage.
Live Music Has No Equal!
Taken By The Fantastic Megan Donohue
While we can't see every show that is out there, we try our hardest to see as many as we can here at RtBE. Sure there are a few left in the calendar year, but for now, here is a listing of of the best concerts we were fortunate enough to have seen in 2017. There are links to show reviews in the titles, also because who doesn't love arbitrary rankings, one show at the bottom took the top prize as RtBE's 2017 Favorite Live Show. Live Review: Classic Quadrophenia Live 9/9/17 @ The MET NY, NY

Hey all, got a new review up @glidemag which you can read Right C'here!!!
It is of Pete Townshend's Classic Quadrophenia Live at The Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. For those new to RtBE Quadrophenia holds a special place in this sites digital heart, it is our favorite album of all time.

We can write a book on the album and should probably do something based around that at some point, and we have seen the band do it in 2013 down by the Sea and Sand in Atlantic City. That show had some issues, but we had a fucking blast. Same with this show, it was goofy, over the top and not true to the original...but we had a great night anyway.

The venue was gorgeous, company was top fucking notch and the music was divine. Enjoy the review, feel free to catch it live if you can, buy the vinyl or DVD. Hey and peep some video below:

Classic Quadrophenia Comes To Metropolitan Opera House

One of the greatest rock and roll song writers of all time is partnering with a full on orchestra to bring his best album to life at a gorgeous venue.

Pete Townshend''s amazing Quadrophenia will be supported by a full orchestra and vocalists including Billy Idol this September for four United States shows. We are pumped to be hitting the September 9th show at the pristine Met Opera House.

We have talked about this before on the site, but this is our all time favorite rock and roll album. While we saw The Who play it by the Sea and Sand a few years back, catching it in this fashion will be exhilarating...and being able to walk up to the venue is a sweet touch as well.

Here is some video to get you prepped for the fall shows, and a full list of the mini tour is below:

Classic Quadrophenia Tour Dates

September 2 – Lenox, MA @ Tanglewood
September 9 – New York, NY @ Metropolitan Opera House
September 10 – New York, NY @ Metropolitan Opera House
September 16 – Los Angeles, CA @ The Greek Theatre

Full Show Friday: The Tubes 8/24/79 Oakland Aud

We search the murky back waters of youtube to find full concerts and post them to the site weekly, come back every seven days to help us celebrate Full Show Friday's. These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...This week...The Tubes!

When we were in NOLA on Saturday night we caught one of the best (and our favorite) groups playing anywhere today, The Rough Seven slayed it at Vaughn's. The show was amazing as always, we will probably discuss it on it's own at another time.

An interesting thing happened though, a fellow fan in the crowd was wearing a Tubes t-shirt, we hadn't thought about them in so long that when we came home we looked online to revisit their tunes and loved this show...so here it is for Full Show Friday.

The San Fran Band is an oddball mix of showmanship, musicianship and art rock. "White Punks on Dope" is classic satire and for this show they end with some Who covers. For those who don't know the keyboardist here, Vince Welnick, went on to join The Grateful Dead in 1990 until the end of their run.

Black and white with great audio and video from Bill Graham's vault. Setlist and a lot more information regarding the recording and show after the jump. Enjoy:

Desert Trip Festival: Classic Rock Fans & Money Makers Dream Come True

By now it's been announced for a few days but if you haven't seen it, there is a new festival called the Desert Trip Festival.

You can read all about it from the NY Times, but the crux is the biggest names in rock and roll history (who are still playing) are coming together for a three day festival in Indio, California outside of Palm Springs and also the site of Coachella.

Beatles and Stones and Dylan Oh My!

This will be an epic show on many fronts, boomers will find it hard to pass up. There will be huge dollars for scalpers but there will probably never be a lineup like this ever again.Something about it doesn't sit right with us though and we can't put our finger on it?

Maybe it is because we just got back from Jazzfest and are festival'ed out, but we are not chomping at the bit to grab tickets and we can't figure out why? Granted are all time favorites are playing, but we are not super excited by it and are a bit confused by that. Feel free to post your thoughts below some recent live video from the big name fest players.
