Dylan Cover #506 The Lumineers - "Subterranean Homesick Blues" Mountain Jam 2013

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by The Lumineers playing "Subterranean Homesick Blues".

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we posted a cover version of this tune:
One of the most iconic songs from Dylan's most famous period and a very early showing of how powerful a music video could be. Dylan nods to beat poetry, current events, Chuck Berry's "No More Monkey Business", paranoia, and the Vietnam War all in around two minutes of linked lyrics over one of his earliest electric recordings. There is also the sly sense of humor which Dylan never gets enough credit for, while raging against the proverbial machine. A classic '60's tune in all respects and one non-Dylan fans usually love as well.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
Wrote about them when we covered a different Dylan cover of theirs for this series.

Thoughts on Cover:
This is an interesting cover as the lyrics are sped through then things drop down for the breaks.  Not our favorite cover in this series, but a different guest heavy percussive based take on the old tune.

Live Streams: Ruby Amanfu

With live music on lock down (like everything else currently in New York City) live streams and old concerts have become essential for live music junkies like RtBE. While this current state of pandemic separation is in order we will highlight various shows/streams/virtual events for your viewing and listening pleasure and you can always check out or weekly Full Show Friday series for concerts from the past. Please support the artists any which way you can.

Today we highlight: Ruby Amanfu

RtBE have loved Ruby ever since we heard her sing with Jack White, were blown away by seeing her cover Bob Dylan live and really enjoyed her solo album of covers. Today the Grammy Nominated singer-songwriter will be talking with Tamar Smithers on Facebook Live at 5pm CST:

To get ready for tonight's chat here is Ruby amazingly covering "Not Dark Yet" in stunning live fashion from 2013:

Dylan Cover #416 Wes Dance "Romance In Durango" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by Wes Dance playing "Romance In Durango"

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover version of this song:
Containing the best opening line of any Dylan song (which places it high on the best opening line of any song ever) "Romance In Durango" is a movie played out over violins, words, dead bodies, love, adventure and life. A western tinged Dylan tune that talks about a horse taking him to Durango. A fantastic burst of creative songwriting and exhilarating playing it is a timelessly fantastic tune.
Cover:

Thoughts On Cover Artist:
RtBE is first finding out about Wes Dance with this posting. He released an album in 2009 on Bandcamp.
Thoughts On Cover:
A little bit of a rough cover with parts and lyrics mixed up, but a valiant effort and that is all anyone can ever give on a Monday.

We kick off Jazzy January Full Show Friday's with a doozy of a concert celebrating John Zorn at 60 which took place back in 2013. The Masters: The Who - Best Live Albums

RtBE loves listening to new music and prides itself on keeping tabs on up and coming artists but in 2019 we are also going to have a monthly spotlight on legendary artists who we really love. We are calling this series The Masters. It will focus on the best albums, live records, transcendent shows and other odd ways we appreciate the artists and their contribution to music, culture and our formation.

For September The Masters focuses on The Who.

A band that was a force of nature. In their prime The Who were a must catch live act. From the magical timing of the sun coming up at Woodstock as if it was a light show to the story about Monterrey Pop and the rift between Jimi Hendrix and The Who which is a classic...
Townshend says “I’ve heard Roger talk about it as a jam session, but it wasn’t a jam session. It was just Jimi on a chair playing at me. Playing at me like ‘Don’t f—k with me, you little sh-t.’”
The musical quarrel came down to Townshend’s insecurity over The Who playing after Jimi Hendrix at Monterey, a gig that he considered to be a “critical concert.” Attempting to negotiate with Jimi didn’t go well, as Hendrix said “that’s not what you really mean. What you really mean is that you don’t want me to go first. You want to be first up there with the guitar smashing,” to which Townshend replied “Jimi, I swear, that’s not what it’s about.”
In the end, the discussion cooled down and Hendrix suggested a coin toss to determine who would go first and The Who came out on the winning side of that toss.
Watching Hendrix’s performance later from the crowd with Mama Cass, she told Townshend, “he’s stealing your act” and Townshend said “no, he’s not stealing my act – he’s doing my act.” Explaining further, Townshend says “for me, it was an act and for him, it was something else. It was an extension of what he was doing.”

They have memorable live moments, both good and bad and as a band continue to tour with two of the original members. While their hey day is clearly behind them, their recent past gets some love on our live albums list below. RtBE was not alive to catch the group as a four piece but we have caught them a few times as well as variations of their work and love every minute of it.

So let's get to their top five live albums below. As a reminder this list is meant to start conversations, not end them....

This week we travel back five years for Green Day's set at The Reading Festival in 2013. While we here at RtBE have never been big fans of the band, their version of poppy theatrical punk hit it big and we can't begrudge them even if we never loved them. Why not check in on them for this Full Show Friday?

With the Benefit for Jimmy G going down tomorrow in Tompkins Square Park we wanted to focus on him this Full Show Friday.

Here is Murphy's Law playing St. Vitus on October 11th, 2013. The show was part of the now defunct CBGB Fest. They were opening for another RtBE NYHC favorite, Judge which makes for some interesting banter from Jimmy inbetween songs in regards to the straight edge crew (and lots of others) in attendance.

As a reminder if you can't make the show you can still donate to help Jimmy out.

Not pro shot, but pretty god damn solid all around. Enjoy:

Still recovering a bit from our southern adventure at Jazzfest, we are keeping it light and airy for this week, all though in bluegrass circles these fellows play pretty damned hard. We are going back to 2013 for a full Trampled By Turtles show from their hometown of Duluth, MN. There are a few interviews in the show as it was recorded for Public Access TV in their home state.

We were slightly disappointed in the last Trampled By Turtles disk we reviewed, but they are fun for a live show and fit well for this Full Show Friday.

Full Show Friday: Dave Matthews Band 5/25/13 SPAC Saratoga, NY

These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...This week...Dave Matthews Band!
August is a special month for us here at RtBE and the main reason why is the perfect little upstate New York town of Saratoga which blooms in full each summer. Live music at the gorgeous Saratoga Performing Arts Center is a major reason for that affection, so this month we will be picking shows from SPAC to present for our Full Show Fridays

Well there is certainly a theme with the last few big band posts as the RtBE staff are split when it comes to Dave Matthews Band, some love them, some hate them. What can not be disputed is the bands draw in upstate NY and really everywhere they tours that has suburban semi-hippies living within a two hour driving radius. When we were in high school it was a major draw each summer, but yet your humble writer never saw them once (thank god) and still can't stand the mans voice.

Our esteemed Editor however has enjoyed them multiple times, but not in many a moon. Because of that we decided to showcase a fairly recent set from the band to kick off our SPAC month here at RtBE. Enjoy:
