Live Review:Gov't Mule/Chris Robinson Brotherhood Summerstage, NYC 5/11/17

With their last record The Black Crowes really showed off their Band and Grateful Dead influences and now with Robinson's solo project it is clear that he was a driving force behind that. Each song during their opening set was fluid and shuffling, just like some of the best Dead songs in their catalog. While not able to jam them out for long, you get the feeling the tracks were prepared with just that in mind.
"Tomorrow's Blues" was a fine example over this style, never in a hurry to go much of anywhere, waltzing around gracefully in the summer sun. A newer song, "Blue Star Woman" continued the lazy pace with a piano intro and mid song break down before segueing excellently and jamming out for version of "California Hymn" that found Neal Casal's guitar leading the way; possessing clear flashes of "Shakedown Street". The band closed their short set with "Narcissus Soaking Wet" that allowed Robinson to get into story mode before segueing into "Shore Power", a perfect soundtrack to a New York City summer night.
Gov't Mule was actually celebrating it's 2000th show in their adopted hometown and would invite some guests out later in the night, but first the band warmed up with some of their hard rocking blues. The group's new record, titled Revolution Come...Revolution Go was featured throughout, but the group started of with heavy combo of "World Boss" off of Shout! from 2013 and "Brand New Angel" from High & Mighty,
Scaling it back for "About To Rage" Mule lost the head of steam they built up by incorporating more wandering solos and less powerful singing from front-man Warren Haynes. The old school groove lead by Matt Abts powerful drumming took the lead on "Rocking Horse" while the instrumental "Birth of The Mule" also worked. The band really pushed it up when the sun went down though with the powerful "Game Face" and extremely effecting "Banks Of The Deep End".
The highlight of the night came when the band brought out Casal on guitar along with surprise harmonica player Bruce Willis to burn through a solid take of the blues classic "Key To The Highway". With Warren revving up his slide guitar and wonderful organ work from Danny Louis the group was locked in and the guests augmented things perfectly Finishing their set with their burning theme song "Mule" and encoring with "Dreams & Songs" grateful fans filled out into the New York Night.

Live Review: Band of Horses 9/22/16 Central Park Summerstage
White Denim took the stage first and played their interesting mix of jam, pop, yacht rock as they moved through their nine song set. The lounge-y, blue eyed soul vibe from "Take It Easy [Ever After Lasting Love]" was a smooth way to work out the late day blues as beer lines grew to obscene lenghts (can Central Park please get some more vendors?!?!) . The energy got more raucous in a "Radar Love" way for closer "Holda Love (I'm Psycho)" jacking things up to fist pumping levels before ending their brief set.
The New York Night was ready for South Carolina based five piece to take the stage. Opening on a relaxed vibe Ben Bridwell let his pedal steel and gorgeous vocals soar over the restrained "Monsters". Not the expected opening, but the scene was set for a great show as the band kicked it up on "The First Song", which was really second on this night. The band is on tour for their recent Why Are You OK? but those songs did not feature much on this night. "Casual Party" and "Hag" were played early with "Throw My Mess Around" and "In A Drawer" mid-set, but the band seemed to be interested in showcasing their older songs.
The group sounded well oiled as "The Great Salt Lake" rolled out over the city (and Bridwell urged us all to wake up), while "Laredo" got things two stepping and "Detlef Schrempf" eased out into the now cooling night air. The band has a talent to make some of the simplest songs sound vital, what they don't normally do is cover other artists, so it was a great surprise to hear "Powderfinger" get shot off the stage. While not the feedback driven solo fest Neil Young and Crazy Horse may pull out, the band put its clean pop driven stamp on the song, providing an engaging twist on the original.
That began a closing run of some of the groups best numbers with an emotional "Marry Song", the always rousing "General Specific", the burning "Is There A Ghost?" and the slap happy "Weed Party". Closing with a mega "Funeral" the band proved once again that they are a blast live and no matter how restrained their studio albums are, they can still engage proper in the live setting.

Bob Geldof Interview on BV
One is even happening in Central Park this weekend, but that is not what the interview is primarily about about as Geldof's band The Boomtown Rats are playing shows in Boston and NYC.
It is a rambling read as Geldof pontificates on lots of things from U2 to plumbers. What is striking is his personal belief in the power of music and how it is no longer as strong communally. I concur slightly but I think he is making too small a box around "rock and roll" because all the acts he mentions are pop music, more specifically Popular music.
If music brings people together on any level it can still deliver powerful results, just in new and different forms perhaps. It is a fascinating time regarding music, the "industry" and what goes on with it is anyones guess. One thing is certain though...no one likes Mondays:

Guitar Guys Get After it in Central Park
We wrote about Brandon when we covered Shorty Fest this year as he was the clear highlight. Watch him steal the show yet again this time on Clark's own "Bright Lights"
Thanks Loren for sending this along. Niederaur is a fantastic talent, as we also know Clark's pretty damn great live as well, but keep an eye on Taz.

Live Review: Phil & Friends 5/31/14 NYC, NY
It is of Phil Lesh and Friends live in Central Park on 5/31/14.
We have always dug Phil's music post Dead and his friends lineup (especially the PLQ era) were some of the best Grateful Dead related tunes since '91 at least, maybe '89. Phil treats the music with the fluid ever changing level of respect it deserves. Nothing is sacred, not tempo, structure or phrasing; the music lives and breathes in the moment.
We have seen all this particular group of players before (minus Ross), and while Medeski, Scofield brought the jazz, Haynes carried the soul and Russo the energy. While the band did a lot to showcase Haynes voice they seemed more natural at just wandering around with ease no real sense of pace. That worked real well under the summer sun in Central Park. Read the review here, will post the full show stream when we find it, and peep some video below:
