Interview: Stoo Odom - New Orleans Bassist

Our second New Orleanian jazz artist we are lucky enough to talk about (and talk to) on RtBE today as we direct you to our interview with Stoo Odom which Glide Magazine was nice enough to publish.

We have known Stoo for a few years now and after a recent trip south we discussed his new album coming out, as well as his upcoming tour of Japan. This was a perfect time to conduct a formal interview with Mr. Odom and include it both on Glide as well as RtBE's Jazzy January.

Please support the artist, read the interview, check out his bandcamp site and peep some video below:

Big Sam's Funky Nation New Song and Interview on Glide

With Jazzfest only two days away the excitement is peaking. Coincidentally @glidemagazine posted an interview and new song from NOLA staple, Big Sam's Funky Nation.

That song "Porkchop" can be seen below and the full interview including his up coming tour dates can be read here. The tune is a mix of P-Funk electro bass, Nola trumpet, and heaping helping of bounce, it is sure to be a hit in the Crescent City.

We dig Big Sam having seen him up here in NYC and down in NOLA and hope to catch him again when he plays the fairgrounds on May 3rd. He will also be releasing a new LP and we hope to review that as well in the near future.

To get in the mood for Jazzfest here are a few more Big Sam numbers to get you grooving and ready for the best festival in the country.

Interview With Frank Migliorelli On Glide Magazine

Hey all, got a new interview up @glidemag which you can read Right C'here!!!
It was a great time chatting with Frank who we have known for a few years now, but never really got a chance to chat at length with. Now with the release of his newest disk Bass Drums Guitars & Organs it was the perfect time to kick back, grab some beers and discuss a wide range of topics.

Frank has been active in the NYC music scene for decades and still loves to talk, play and write music. We dug into a lot of topics, but could have kept going and going as he has an encyclopedia like knowledge of tunes and players. Thanks to Frank for chatting and we should have a review of his disk up on Glide shortly, until then dig into the interview

Support the artist, buy the album, stream it/buy it on bandcamp (or below) peep some video as well:

10 Years With Glide Magazine: A Look Back Part 1

Wow, @glidemag, has it really been 10 years since I first contributed to the website? That is hard to believe, time flies. In chatting with the sites fantastic editor, Shane Handler, about this series it turns out I have been the longest continual contributor to Glide, that's a fun feat. It continues to be a great ride but since everyone likes round numbers, I decided to take some time to look back at my favorite writings for the site.

To start this retrospective I wanted to focus on my first interview for Glide, which was also my first reporting interview anywhere. It was with an emerging band from Philly who were just starting to break out, Dr. Dog.
The band had just released We All Belong and were hitting the national radar for the first time. You can read the full piece here, but I want to reminisce on the experience.

Neil Young Interviewed by Howard Stern

Thanks to Ed for sending over this interview that Howard Stern conducted with Uncle Neil:

I really enjoy Howard Stern interviews when he is not talking to a porn star. Neil Young is a lot of things but porn star is not one of them.
I dig when he talks about his voice, he has such an identifiable tone, which can't be classified as good, but IS great. He is his own muse, he goes where the vibe takes him, even in his personal life apparently. Fantastic, this is a in depth listen so give it a shot. When your done with this give this song a listen, a personal favorite of ours:

Bob Geldof Interview on BV

Over on Brooklyn Vegan they posted an interview with Bob Geldorf. A philanthropist rock and roller Geldof helped solidify charity concerts to worthwhile causes as something that can and should be done to help make the world a better place.
One is even happening in Central Park this weekend, but that is not what the interview is primarily about about as Geldof's band The Boomtown Rats are playing shows in Boston and NYC

It is a rambling read as Geldof pontificates on lots of things from U2 to plumbers. What is striking is his personal belief in the power of music and how it is no longer as strong communally. I concur slightly but I think he is making too small a box around "rock and roll" because all the acts he mentions are pop music, more specifically Popular music.

If music brings people together on any level it can still deliver powerful results, just in new and different forms perhaps. It is a fascinating time regarding music, the "industry" and what goes on with it is anyones guess. One thing is certain though...no one likes Mondays:
