Dylan Cover #667 Matt Borrello "John Brown" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by Matt Borrello playing "John Brown"

Thoughts on Original:
From our first time tackling a cover of this song:
An absolutely crushing anti-war song, that is a monster from Dylan and should be more well known. While "Masters of War" breaks down the war machine, "John Brown" addresses the human toll expertly. Musically it takes from the folk tradition, as lots of Dylan's early tunes do, but lyrically it expands upon the topics of patriotism, passion, and pain. A chilling tale of hurt and the cost of war, "John Brown" is an all-time great Dylan tune, an artistic protest song.

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
This is the first time RtBE has heard of Matt Borrello.

Thoughts on Cover:
An excellent live cover of the powerful song...in today's political climate it couldn't be more on point. Which is sad.

Dylan Cover #656 doppelfinger & OSKA "With God On Our Side"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by doppelfinger & OSKA playing "With God On Our Side"

Thoughts on Original
From the first time we talked about around Veterans Day as well:
Perhaps the most poignant and lasting song Dylan has written and that speaks volumes. Lyrically it is perfect; using history, the warping of religion and politics to get across the point that man will rationalize anything, even war. Only played live 30 times since it's debut at Dylan's historic Town Hall show the song has added weight and meaning when it is played.

Morality and War, Religion and Righteousness, all just words when it comes down to it, hold life inside those letters. Musically stark, Dylan uses his impressive lyrics to express the confusion perfectly. Should be mandatory listing in every history classroom.

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
This is the first time we have heard doppelfinger & OSKA who are German folk singers.

Thoughts on Cover:
We have talked about this song on Veterans Day (or the week of) every year since we started doing this series and we will continue to until we close up shop.

This is a very affecting straight ahead acoustic live cover, from the German singer who adjusts the WW2 verse to make it hit home even more. Great playing and singing from this duo delivering an impressive version of this powerful tune.

You can listen to bad ass tune below following the perfect Patton quote that the group used to intro it:
No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.

We have talked about this song on Veterans Day (or the week of) every year since we started doing this series and we will continue to, Odetta takes center stage with a version this year. the acoustic instrumentation seems to be banging into each other in intoxicating fashion. In fact we like the intricate playing much more then Odetta's dramatic vocals. A cool version, Thanks Ceez.

Thoughts on Cover
Well number 350 in our series just happened to fall on Veterans Day 2018 and gives us a chance to make this one special. While we paid tribute to the Veterans with some NYHC earlier today, we go lyrically heavy for our Dylan Cover now. Joan is tied to Bob and vice versa and this tune and presentation is both tearful and manages to piss you off at the same time. Great song, Great cover not much more needs to be said.

Thoughts on Cover Artist
Bon Iver has never been one of our favorites, but we did love his production on the Last Blind Boys disk. He has had an interesting career though to say the least.
Thoughts on Cover
This cover is a great take on the track, especially with that huge baritone sax adding to the mix. The massive band swells adding dramatically to a powerful as all hell song. In a year with so much violent turmoil this song continues to resonate and unfortunately war over religion will never go away. Oh well, we have talked about this song on Veterans Day (or the week of) every year since we started doing this series and we will continue to, this version will probably rank as one of the best.
