Enjoy The 4th of July with The Grateful Dead

The United States celebrates it's Independence today, and while the country has deep rooted issues and problems we are dealing (and not dealing) with, it is still the best country mankind has founded in our sordid history. So enjoy the outdoors, hanging safely with friends and living life. What better soundtrack for that is there than The Grateful Dead?!?!

We took the opportunity a few years back to talk about the Best American Band question on July 4th. Now we are just giving you our answer in concert form, the Grateful Dead's July 4th 1989 concert. What a doozy! It is the perfect time to bust it back out and get Truckin' Up To Buffalo.

This was played/filmed up at Rich Stadium, home of the Buffalo Bills and captures the Dead in one of their better late period shows, pro audio and video to boot. From the opening "Bertha" to the 1st set closing "Deal" Jerry is just on and seems to be in a great mood, playing and singing with energy, leading the band as only he could. A few personal favorites of RtBE's are in their ("Stagger Lee", "Row Jimmy") adding to us digging on this set.

Not many setlist surprises, just on point playing from the group. The second set starts with their lone hit "Touch of Grey" before the reggae tinge of "Man Smart, Woman Smarter".  "Terrapin Station" is always a welcomed second set addition and Garcia takes over for a whirlwind "All Along The Watchtower" and "Morning Dew" mid set combo. RtBE are always a sucker for Brent's work on "I Will Take You Home" as it just melts our hearts and what better encore for the 4th of July then "US Blue's"?

The full set list is below, Enjoy:

Set 1
Bertha
Greatest Story Ever Told
Cold Rain and Snow
Walkin' Blues
Row Jimmy
When I Paint My Masterpiece
Stagger Lee
Looks Like Rain
Deal

Set 2

Veterans Day 2019

Veterans Day is an important one in our history, read more about it here.

Since this is a music site we will pay homage in our way and especially since our friend Glen has recorded a song with his great NYHC band Billyclub Sandwich titled "Veteran's Day". You can listen to bad ass tune below following the perfect Patton quote that the group used to intro it:
No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.

Bandcamp Donates All Proceeds To Voting Rights Project Today

Today Bandcamp, one of RtBE's favorite sites for finding, hosting and distributing music for artists, is donating all of their proceeds to the Voting Rights Project.

You yourself can give directly to the project, and you can also grab great music to go along with that. There are tons of artists that are on their and many are donating all proceeds as well.

My band Angels & Vagabonds have 2 EP's on the site, The A&V EP and the acoustic based Anyways... that you can grab from bandcamp to help out, as we will be donating to the good cause as well. You can stream the records below, but feel free to purchase them to help out.

Enjoy The Fourth of July with The Grateful Dead

The United States celebrates it's Independence today, so enjoy the outdoors, hanging with friends and living life. What better soundtrack for that is there than The Grateful Dead?!?!
(This is RtBE's 4th of July tradition)

We took the opportunity a few years back to talk about the Best American Band question on July 4th. Now we are just giving you our answer in concert form, the Grateful Dead's July 4th 1989 concert. What a doozy! It is the perfect time to bust it back out.

From the opening "Bertha" to the 1st set closing "Deal" Jerry is just on and seems to be in a great mood. A few personal favorites of RtBE's are sprinkled in ("Stagger Lee", "Greatest Story Ever Told", "Row Jimmy") adding to us digging on this set.

Not many surprises, just on point playing from the group and Garcia in particular. The second set starts with a great "Touch of Grey" before the reggae tinge of "Man Smart, Woman Smarter" which is our favorite version of this cover tune. "Terrapin Station" is always a welcomed 2nd set addition and RtBE are suckers for Brent's work on "I Will Take You Home" as it just melts our hearts.

A powerful Dylan cover and a great slightly slower rendition of "Not Fade Away" to close out the set. What better Encore for the 4th of July then "US Blue's"? While no where near the best show ever played, this is a great capturing of later day Dead with Brent in their arena late 80's summer phase.

The full set list is below, Enjoy:

Dylan Cover #292 Caitlin Gilligan "Let Me Die In My Footsteps"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is by Caitlin Gilligan and it is a live cover of "Let Me Die In My Footsteps"
Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this track:
A Dylan track that for once you don't have to wonder what he is singing about. This is Dylan's reaction to nuclear war and the cold war scare that was happening, "Let Me Die In My Footsteps" is a defiant statement against to the idea of bomb shelters and fear. A proud American song that still resonates today and an early Dylan track we go back to periodically. Also sounding a whole hell of a lot like "Long Black Veil" helps things out too. Quick side note, it was the first Dylan song we put on the morning of September 11th 2001. (We thought it was appropriate to put a cover of it up today, unfortunately it is relevant in more ways than one)
Cover:

Thoughts on The Cover Artist:
We do not know much of  Caitlin Gilligan, she is a Scottish singer-songwriter and  she shares her youtube clips.

Thoughts on Cover:
This is a excellent delicate version of a great song.

Rotana's New Single is the Pop Strutting "Daddy"

In a season when American values are seriously getting turned on their head, a new pop track from an L.A. based newcomer shouldn't make much of a wave, but when you hear the back story of Rotana, you will see where the present day idiocy called politics and confident dance music intersect.
First the important thing, her music. Her newest single is "Daddy" a stuttering funk minimalist pop/dance number that contains a marching fire musically while delivering vocal passion that leaps into your ears.

Check it out on Spotify or below:

Second, a mini backstory of who she is. Her story is like a of pop star hopefuls but with one major twist; the place she was born would never allow her to even think about doing anything close to it. Being born in Saudi Arabia Rotana Tarabzouni has stated in interviews she couldn't even dream of a career singing and that in Saudi Arabia:
"Possibility and dreaming [in Saudi] isn't that easy," she explains. "[Your mind] doesn't even allow it because it doesn't know it. There's no frame of reference. Your mind doesn't have proof that the unimaginable can happen."
This will happen when your country of birth is ranked 134th out of 145 countries by the Global Gender Gap Report. Not only can't women drive cars in Saudi Arabia, they must always have a male guardian (regardless of age) and can't even try on clothes while shopping. It is one of the most gender segregated countries on the planet and thankfully Rotana came to study towards her Masters Degree at U.S.C. Once in Los Angeles she became inspired and started living her dream of singing in public and doing a damn good job of it.

During February we like to focus on pop music more and this new artist cooks musically and reminds us that people yearn to be in this country pursuing their dreams that they may have never even dared to think about in the country they happened to be born in. Music knows no boundaries, has no travel bans, doesn't discriminate by gender; music just shines hope.

For more on Rotana check out this mini documentary from 2015 that goes more in depth to her story:

Full Show Friday: Grateful Dead 7/4/1989

Last year we searched the murky back waters of youtube to find full concerts and posted them to the site monthly.  That was all well and good but this year RtBE is upping the ante with a show every week to celebrate Full Show Friday's.  These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...This week...The Grateful Dead!
