The five piece punk players from Perth, Australia, Aborted Tortoise just released their newest EP, a four song burner titled Scale Model Subsistence Vendor. The band, Connor Lane- Vocals, Tom Milan- Guitar, Charles Wickham- Guitar, John Peers- Bass, Alex Patching- Drums, have been doing this since 2013 but they have not lost their youthful vigor and angst.
The group's style is a mix of raw thrashing and melodic surf rock guitars recalling early Suicidal Tendencies and early British pop punk.Opener "Making A Mint" is a blast of back and forth riffs and slamming drums that drive the band forward with head banging stop/start power. "Plastic Orgasm" is more a straight ahead banger that shouts it's title while upbeat guitars slam dance before each instrument gets a micro solo.
"Factory" recalls Buzzcocks pop flair and angular guitar lines around satisfied snarls around a topic of monotonous work while that same style colors "Violent Consumers" which predates the quarantined panic shopping but nails the resulting chaos around a motoring bass line and riffing guitars.
The quick blasting of these four tracks are invigorating during locked down times as Aborted Tortoise smart and snarky tunes linger in the brain after the short Scale Model Subsistence Vendor EP wraps up.

We reviewed his most recent studio album for Glide, the man and his band are super talented. To get in the mood here is a live tune from them titled "Taking Water":
Super surprised by this record as I know Dillon as a metal loving punk rock fusion jazz guy, but this record is melodic and smooth as hell and really great. I didn't use the word "mature" in the review but it could be applied I guess as things have certainly mellowed out without diminishing the appeal.
The Raconteurs have released a live EP and documentary about their time at Electric Lady Studios in NYC where they performed for fans in 2019, simply titled Live at Electric Lady.
After an intro describing them as "messy sophisticated" and multiple thanks to the corporate sponsors the band breaks into their distortion drenched new rocker "Born and Razed". The coolest part of the short EP arrives next as the band tackles a cover of "Blank Generation" by Richard Hell & the Voidoids for the hometown. The cover features the wailing guitars of Jack White and Brendan Benson as well as lots of backing vocal 'oooh's and ahh's'.
One of the band's oldest originals "Level" showcases the true power of The Raconteurs as a live act. Bassist Jack Lawrence and drummer Patrick Keeler (both of The Greenhornes) are a powerhouse low end combo which push each song forward via power, grace and energy; while White and Benson may get the headlines, this band is really propelled by their rhythm section.
"Old Enough" is delivered expertly with Benson's vocals ringing true while the title track of their newest release "Help Me Stranger" gets a disco influx from keyboardist Dean Fertita along with more cool drumming from Keeler. "Only Child" contains a killer guitar solo with warbling pedal effects that ends too soon while the EP wraps up with strong vocals and rocking guitar from White on "Sunday Driver".
The EP contains a studio version of "Blank Generation" for good measure and while short, Live at Electric Lady proves they are a force to be reckoned with from the live stage. Other recent live releases like the Third Man Records Vault release Live In Tulsa capture the elongated full night of arena shaking capabilities of the band, but this brief outing scratches the 2020 live music itch.

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a cover by The Black Crowes playing "When Night Comes Falling From the Sky"
Thoughts on Original: From the first time we tackled a cover of this tune:
In the fog and haze of 80's Dylan comes one of his most perplexing songs, "When Night Comes Falling From The Sky". The lyrics are some of his best from this period, but holy god of your choice...the production was the cheesiest of his career. Empire Burlesque had a few flops on it, and it is hard not to say this track is one of them, just check out the original video for it.
What saves this song from the scrap heap is the balls out awesome version on the amazing Bootlegs Series 1-3 which was recorded with Steven Van Zandt and Roy Bitton from The E-Street Band. This yet again shows that Dylan could not pick out his best work when it came time to release it officially from the studio sessions. While the Bootleg version isn't perfect, the vocals in particular are recorded low but sung so strongly it is exciting, it makes the listener examine the tune without the "Disco Dylan" cheese playing in their ear. A song which is perfect for interpretation, and one that should probably get a definitive version at some point as it it is one of Dylan true hidden gems.

Thoughts on Cover Artist: RtBE dig on The Black Crowes. We are in the minority though as we think Before the Frost...After The Freeze was their best album and they were reaching new levels when they broke up in 2011 with the lineup we have pictured up on this post (Luther Dickinson fit the band amazingly). The brothers are back, strictly for a money grab, and even knowing that, we will catch them when they return to the road post Covid. Thoughts on Cover:
Full on over top production smacks you in the ear when this cover starts as the Crowes complete with backing vocals come roaring out of the gate. Then the track has a stop/start blues groove to it before some ripping guitar work and very lively piano action. Chris Robinson truly digs into the vocals (while cutting out some) as drums slam powerfully. A very unique take that is pretty interesting in every aspect.

One of RtBE's all-time favorite hip hop groups A Tribe Called Quest is our Full Show Friday entry today. This is The Art Of Moving Butts In Europe recorded in 1990.
The debut self titled record from Soakie is a 13 minute blast of fast fresh punk/hardcore which reverberates around your brain with raw power. The band members are split between Melbourne and NYC and the old school New York Hard Core vibe is clearly present in this ripping release.
Opener "Nuke The Frats" declares war on the patriarchy while shouting out scrambled lyrics before the track slaps into a grooving finale. "Or You Or You" finds vocalist Summer Perlow getting her whine on in classic punk fashion while "Power Tool" starts poppy before moving into more Perlow screams and a slamming drum movement from Austin Burkey.
The slashing riffs of Samuel Willoughby support the plain spoken complaint that there are too many "Boys On Stage" while the rumbling low end from Nellie Pearson propels "What's Your Gender?" before closer "Don't Talk Back" screeches and slams with defiant power.
The group sings about modern issues directly raging against the proverbial machine and while the musical backing has power Perlow's voice is distinct enough to stand out, but is at a register that can burn out quickly no matter how in the right they are with their politics.
The whirlwind blitzkrieg of "Ditch The Rich" is a bad ass example of Soakie's ferocious power at it's zenith as they slam ahead while throwing in enough musical curve balls to keep fans and newcomers to the genre engaged and enraged.

RtBE has loved Lillie Mae, having seen her supporting Jack White, at her album release party in Brooklyn and reviewed her recent album. Here is one of our favorite live versions of her playing a killer version of "El Cumbanchero" to get ready for tonight:
It is of the My Morning Jacket's newest release, Waterfalls II.
The album is solid, especially for an "outtakes" record. As a side note, a friend of the site brought up that all of My Morning Jacket and Jim James solo releases sound good, then for some reason don't stick around in the brain and we couldn't agree more.
RtBE had completely forgotten about Uniformed Distortion until we started doing research for Waterfalls II. It is a good album, just never went back to it. Perhaps this new one will lodge in the gray matter more.
