Sally Baby's Silver Dollars
S/T
**** out of *****
The debut release from the New Orleans, LA based Sally Baby's Silver Dollars is a self titled collection of six tunes that show off this talented new group as the tracks were deeply inspired by their home cities rich musical past.
Front man Salvatore Geloso steals the show with passionate, unique vocals that shine bright. The band of Geloso on vocals, guitar, Zach Valentine – upright bass, Nathan Wolman – trumpet, James Beaumont – saxophone, Oliver Tuttle – trombone, Steve De Troy – piano, Jesse Armerding – drums, percussion, play everything from trad jazz to blues to r&b as the outfit let those classic New Orleans sound seep into their tunes.
Old timey jazz starts things off with Geloso's voice ringing out for the dirge like offering "The Fool" before an r&b bass and drum groove lead the hip-shaking "Devil's Shoe String" which manages to shake the ya-ya's out.
The classical blues offering "I've Got No More Tears Left to Cry" is a weepy horn showcase while "Souvenir" is a gorgeous throwback r&b/soul number that feels passionate, raw and perfectly executed with supportive horn lines and solos, piano and more passionate singing from Geloso.
The most dynamic offering here, "Mother Mary" starts off with bass and one-mic traditional jazz call and response, then kicks up with energetic horn and low end work that cooks before boiling over the top with a theatrical, vamped up ending. The tune expertly captures the band's robust sounds and style while album closer "Down in New Orleans" rumbles and shakes with Caribbean flair, a great groove and giddy confidence.
A surefooted debut, Sally Baby's Silver Dollars self-titled offering gives the world a glimpse into their confident mix of jazz, soul, and blues.
