Dylan Cover #528 The Black Crowes "Girl From The North Country" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's artists, The Black Crowes covering "Girl From the North Country" live.

Every April (and first week of May) we have a special focus in our ongoing Monday Bob Dylan Cover Series on artists who will be playing Jazzfest in New Orleans. Today we highlight, The Black Crowes who play the best festival in America on Friday May 6th..

Thoughts on Dylan's Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover version of this song:
A fun little number that connects Dylan with folk's past. I heard Simon and Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair" first when I was growing up so I have always been a bit more partial to that version of this old folk tune even though Dylan changed a bunch of stuff around (obviously) with his recording that appeared on The Freewheeling Bob Dylan. His duet with Johnny Cash that highlights Nashville Skyline is something else entirely, a major sonic effort that I love. On an album that saw so many massive tunes come flowing out of the bard this one can be overshadowed yet his first version of this track is just a sweet folk ditty that has aged very, very well.

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
RtBE dig the Crowes.  We've seen them a bunch, reviewed them and ranked their album Before The Frost....Until The Freeze, in our top 50 of the '00 decade on Glide. We like that album even better than their debut, which they will be playing in it's entirety at Jazzfest this friday!

Thoughts on Cover:
A really solid acoustic cover from the Brother Crowes. Not a bad word to say, they nailed this jam.

Full Show Friday: Esperanza Spalding Quartet - Jazz Sous Les Pommiers 2008

We search the murky back waters of youtube to find full concerts and post them to the site weekly, come back every seven days to help us celebrate Full Show Friday's. These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...This week...Esperanza Spalding Quartet!

It's Jazzy January again here at RtBE, so get ready to kick off 2022 with some different styled shows every Friday. For this series we skew into new (or more recent) jazz lands. Keeping it current proves there is amazing live jazz still being performed no matter what Ken Burns says.

The supremely talented Esperanza Spalding leads her outfit through a moving concert at the 2008 Jazz Sous Les Pommiers.

These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...This week...Anthony Hamilton!

Every April we have a special showcase for bands who are playing this years Jazzfest in NOLA. Today we will focus on Anthony Hamilton who will be playing today, Friday April 24th.

Unfortunately due to the outbreak of Covid19, Jazzfest has been rescheduled for October (no official date as of yet). Hopefully all of the scheduled acts are healthy and will be performing then, but since we crafted these posts before the outbreak, RtBE will still post them this month and will regroup/revisit things in the fall when (hopefully) things return to semi-normal.

Update: the 2020 version of Jazzfest has been officially canceled

Anthony Hamilton delivers some rocking funky soul music with his group at their first Newport Jazz Fest set back in 2008.  He will bring this energy, gorgeous vocals and soul strutting today to the FairgroundsRtBE wish we were there to get down with Hamilton and crew.

Dylan Cover #395 Mudcrutch "Most Likely You Go Your Way And I'll Go Mine"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's artists, Mudcrutch doing a live cover of "Most Likely You Go Your Way And I'll Go Mine"

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this song:
It's that thin, that wild mercury sound. It's metallic and bright gold, with whatever that conjures up. Those are the phrases that Dylan himself used to describe the sound that he wanted on Blonde on Blonde. Safe to say he got it and perhaps never more so than on "Most Likely You Go Your Way And I'll Go Mine". That whirling organ that sounds like it may actually take flight, the tempo, the cutting lyric, hot damn this song is a joy. RtBE actually got to see him open a show way back with this one and it was a hoot, not as good as the original, but a gem to see live and hear anytime.
The closest I ever got to the sound I hear in my mind was on individual bands in the Blonde on Blonde album. It's that thin, that wild mercury sound. It's metallic and bright gold, with whatever that conjures up.

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
We have reviewed Mudcrutch in the past and dig their blues rock sound, but not their name. Fun that Tom Petty gave these guys a late career, very very cool of him.

Thoughts on Cover:
A pretty solid fan video which starts a bit late but captures the spirit and song performance very well. In fact if their are better versions of the band doing this one let us know in the comments and we will update the video as this is a fun, if straight ahead cover.

Full Show Friday: Robert Cray Live in 2008

We search the murky back waters of youtube to find full concerts and post them to the site weekly, come back every seven days to help us celebrate Full Show Friday's. These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...This week...Robert Cray!

Our focus this month in our ongoing Masters series are The Blues

One of the people we almost put on the list for our top five favorite Blues studio albums, but just missed the cut was Robert Cray and his brilliant 1986 record Strong Persuader. Robert Christgau clued us into this record and it is some excellent blues work, especially from a time when things were getting a bit wonky...the eighties.

One of those tunes makes an appearance at today's show with "Right Next Door (Because of Me)" but this whole show proves how polished Cray still is. A really cool night of tunes from 2008 for some clean and crisp blues playing from the band. Pro Shot, pro sound with full set list, times, and band info below.

Enjoy:

Live Review: The Hold Steady @ White Eagle Hall 7/25/18

Hey all, got a new review up @glidemag which you can read Right C'here!!!

Last week we got the pleasure to catch one of RtBE's Favorites, The Hold Steady celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Stay Positive.

While Stay Positive was never our favorite record the show delivered on all fronts. The new venue is excellent with great site lines, bars, catching up with family and friends (Happy Birthday Meg) and easy access to the city. The band was on point having clearly practiced some of their lesser played numbers from that album.

The group is embarking on a mini tour centered around the album this summer playing some great venues so support the band, read the review, go see them live and peep some video from the show below:

Happy 10th Birthday to Drive-By Truckers, Brighter Than Creation's Dark

Earlier today we wished Dr. John and Gris-Gris a Happy 50th and now we stay in the south and wish the Drive-By Truckers a Happy 10th on their acclaimed release, Brighter Than Creation's Dark.
The album was the first for DBT without Jason Isbell since their breakthrough Southern Rock Opera. It is a huge record that benefited from the band playing some acoustic based shows on the Dirt Underneath Tour which found the players augmented by Spooner Oldham on keys. The legendary Spooner stuck around for this recording and the whole record is a musical tour-de-force.

It is a loooooong disk, nineteen tracks and all of them have a lot to say either lyrically or musically. Banjo, acoustic guitars, harmonicas and pedal steels gets more love and the tone overall is softer than the majority of their releases putting a focus on the strength of the lyrics.

Patterson Hood pens nine of them and opens with the heartbreaking story song of "Two Daughters and a Beautiful Wife" about Bryan Harvey and his families senseless murders and closes things with the the cinematic John Neff pedal steel laced "Monument Valley".

Like all of the Truckers efforts (at least to these ears) Mike Cooley pulls the best lines, while Shonna Tucker holds her own with three tracks. Cooley's "A Ghost to Most" is his visceral reaction to the lack of relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina and he also supplied the gorgeous title as it is a line in "Checkout Time in Vegas".

From the fuzz guitars on "3 Dimes Down" to the solemn drums on "The Home Front" to the swirling psychedelia of "That Man I Shot" to the defiant balls rock of "The Righteous Path" the group sound so locked in and confident; it is grand.

While personal tastes finds RtBE gravitating more towards It's Great To Be Alive and for studio work Decoration Day, there is no denying what an artistic achievement Brighter Than Creation's Dark is. In fact one of our favorite writers on music Robert Christgau pegs it as the bands high-point. Check out his full review:
OK, 19 songs, gotta be filler here somewhere, and there is, only it isn't melodic--with all music credited to the band, Shonna Tucker's muzzier lyrics and Mike Cooley's more elusive ones sound as well-turned as those of Patterson Hood, who's never written better. In Hood's songs, an opening act, an alcoholic, a crankhead, a heroic suicide, a heroic survivor and two different soldiers in Iraq fall between an opener where heaven is Saturday morning with your wife and kids and a closer that contemplates "the ironic nature of history." Cooley remains the lowlife specialist, most warmly with lost party girl Lisa and hometown gay guy Bob. Some complain "Bob" is the corniest country song they ever wrote. That's the point--one of several. A
Pretty spot on and elusive...just like this fantastic release from the Truckers. Enjoy a few tracks from it below, buy the record and most importantly catch them live ASAP

After the frigid January Jazz month we usually like to go big names for February. The Police aren't our favorite rock band, but there is no doubting how popular they are. This show happens in 2008 on the bands reunion tour and is in the world famous Tokyo Dome.

This is pro shot, pro sound and a fantastic capture of the band. Enjoy:
