Album Review: Los Lobos - Native Sons

When an established act decides to release an album of covers it is usually not to be taken all that seriously, a treat for their fans and a stop gap release for the band until inspiration truly strikes. However in the hands of one of the most underrated bands going, Los Lobos new cover album of songs written by Los Angeles artists, Native Sons, is a unique tribute to their hometown.
The twelve covers here range from well known tunes to lesser known artists who many listeners will be discovering for the first time and in the talented Los Lobos hands, each achieves a high level of connection. The rhythm and blues opener brings the horns and energy of Thee Midnighters to the forefront as "Love Special Delivery" pumps, kicking off the album with aplomb.
The roots rock outfit deliver a mix of styles, they get their garage rocking '50's swing kicking with "Father John", "Flat Top Joint" and "Los Chucos Suaves" which cooks with a searing sax while more psychedelic covers spring fourth via Buffalo Springfield's "Bluebird/For What It's Worth". The flexible band get jazzy on Percy Mayfield's "Never No More" and "Dichoso" from Willie Bobo, before putting their touch on smooth SoCal pop from Jackson Browne "Jamaica Say You Will" and The Beach Boys "Sail On, Sailor".
The lone original in the mix is the title track, a relaxed shuffle that cools things out before the extended take on War's "The World is a Ghetto" helped out by Little Willie G. and Barrence Whitfield on vocals. The record wraps with the sweet doo-wop inspired instrumental cover of "Where Lovers Go" from The Jaguars.
This collection finds Los Lobos delivering a true love letter to the city that shaped their band, inspirations and sounds. Native Sons elevates common cover albums as Los Lobos continues there dynamic music making.

New Single From MOSES "Magic Mirror" Out Tomorrow
The newest single from the London based rock band MOSES is out tomorrow (11/17) on Space & I Records.
The new track, "Magic Mirror", is a mix of indie rock styles from decades past yet still kicks in the modern age. It is produced by Gavin Monaghan at Wolverhampton's Magic Garden Studio, it heralds their second album - recorded there over lockdown and due for release in Spring.

New Album from Earthless Coming in January
The rockers Earthless are releasing Night Parade of One Hundred Demons in January.
The band has some reason for the very metal sounding title:
The album and its title were inspired by an ancient Japanese legend in which a horde of demons, ghosts and other terrifying ghouls descend upon sleeping villages at night, once a year. Known as Hyakki Yagyō, or the “Night Parade of One Hundred Demons,” one version of the tale states that anyone who witnesses this otherworldly procession will die instantly—or be carried off by the creatures of the night. As a result, the villagers hide in their homes, lest they become victims of these supernatural invaders. “My son and I came across the ‘Night Parade of One Hundred Demons’ in a book of traditional Japanese ghost stories,” bassist Mike Eginton explains. “I like the idea of people hiding and being able to hear the madness but not see it. It’s the fear of the unknown.”
Night Parade of One Hundred is only two songs as the psych rockers let fucking loose. RtBE can not wait to hear it. Check out a teaser for the album below:

A excellent Dylan tune from any era but one that in particular screamed "I'm Still Alive And Kickin'!" on Time Out Of Mind at a phase when Dylan was simply an after thought in current popular music scene. One of Dylan's most haunting tracks; it is hard not to feel his emotions and finality of the coming darkness as Dylan sings this lyric set. An all-time great that is mysterious, foreboding, honest and powerful. First class Bob.

Two New Albums from Jack White Coming in 2022
Jack White is coming out with two separate albums in 2022. Fear of the Dawn and Entering Heaven Alive will be released in April and July respectively.
RtBE are super fans of White and can not wait to hear these. Below is the official video for "Taking Me Back" which will be on Fear of the Dawn.
Album Review: Grateful Dead - Fox Theatre, St. Louis, MO 12-10-71

1971 was a transitional year for the Grateful Dead with keyboardist Keith Godchaux joining the band and Ron "Pigpen" McKernan phasing out of things with health issues. The band has released other shows from this period, but this show at the Fox Theater in St. Louis on December 10th 1971 definitely was special, as both keyboardists played at a high level with the group on this night.
The two keyboardists are actually the highlights for the full show and start the festivities early as Godchaux plays wonderfully jazzy on "Sugaree" and "Loser" while Pigpen takes to his front man post with ease for great versions of "Mr. Charlie" and "Next Time You See Me". A fiery "Beat It On Down The Line" and a loose "Tennessee Jed" along with Jerry Garcia's dexterous playing on "El Paso" make up the first set highlights.
A fun "Run Run Rudolph" also gets the holiday cheer flowing as Pigpen leads the way with Godchaux right behind on piano continuing the keyboardists successful night. A long and wandering "Good Lovin'" throws Pigpen out in front of the band, but things never really take off, showing that the group were evolving out of their 60's psych blues days when Pigpen was the defacto front man. The band was moving into their folksie cosmic cowboy era and tunes like "Brokedown Palace" and "Comes a Time" really strike a chord as the harmonies and the playing is gorgeous for both.
That's not to say the band was not stretching out and experimenting still, this is the Dead after all. The best of the far out playing comes in the form of "The Other One" for this show. The tune rises out of a "Truckin' >Drums" pairing like a phoenix and blazes into existence before weirdly dipping into "Sitting On Top Of The World" only to fall back into "The Other One" with pounding fury and fee jazz abandon. The closing "Not Fade Away > Going Down The Road Feeling Bad > Not Fade Away" is a spirited sandwich and the overall the strong show ends with "One More Saturday Night" as a pumping finale.
1971 was an interesting time for the band and while we may prefer other nights from around this one, It is hard to argue with the quality of this release. From the the gorgeous cover art to the larger Listen to the River: St. Louis '71 '72 '73 box set this comes from, the Grateful Dead team consistently puts out top notch offerings from the band and the stand alone Fox Theatre, St. Louis, MO 12-10-71 continues that successful trend.

North Mississippi All-Stars To Release New Album, Set Sail
An RtBE Favorite the North Mississippi All-Stars are back with a new record, Set Sail, to be released on January 28th. You can pre-order the album now.

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by Ellen Andersson playing "With God On Our Side"
From the first time we talked about around Veterans Day as well:
Perhaps the most poignant and lasting song Dylan has written and that speaks volumes. Lyrically it is perfect; using history, the warping of religion and politics to get across the point that man will rationalize anything, even war. Only played live 30 times since it's debut at Dylan's historic Town Hall show the song has added weight and meaning when it is played.
Morality and War, Religion and Righteousness, all just words when it comes down to it, hold life inside those letters. Musically stark Dylan uses his impressive lyrics to express the confusion perfectly. Should be mandatory listing in every history classroom.

We have talked about this song on Veterans Day (or the week of) every year since we started doing this series and we will continue to until we close up shop. This is a strong straight ahead acoustic live cover, from Andersson showcasing the soaring vocals of the group and the lyrics from Dylan expertly.
