I see great things in baseball. It's our game - the American game. It will take our people out-of-doors, fill them with oxygen, give them a larger physical stoicism. Tend to relieve us from being a nervous, dyspeptic set. Repair these losses, and be a blessing to us.
Opening Day should be a national holiday, plain and simple. Once winter is gone (at least officially), Baseball can never arrive soon enough. Here's hoping your favorite team wins, especially if you are a fellow Mets fan. Let's Go Mets!
We know the ghost of Steve Goodman and Eddie Vedder are both rooting for those Cubbies...

This is a super cool piece and it may be an idea we steal in the future. Quite a few Mets fans are in this, and since they are the smartest fans in baseball we will highlight them. Who knew George Thorogood was a Mets supporter? Julian Casablancas yes, but Bad Religion's (and Minor Threat's) Brian Baker? That is a new cool one to find out about. Chris Forsyth and Josh Kolenik are new to the site as Mets fans and musicians so that is doubly exciting!
It is fun how half the people take it seriously and half are phoning it in (or sarcasm doesn't really work on email baseball prediction interviews) but we really like Riley Breckenridge's take on the shitty Angels ownership decisions, Kevin Morby, David Cook and Jim Suptic are super engaged Royals fans, Pete Yorn delivers as a delusional Yankee fan and Matt Muse must be smarting over that Eloy Jimenez injury....
Lots of Yankee/Dodgers world series predictions going down and those are definitely the favorites. RtBE will just be happy for a full season and catching a game at Citi Field when the time is right. Hopefully we will bump into Thorogood, Casablancas, Baker, Forsyth and Kolenik working on a new Mets song...until then here is Baker's first band Minor Threat, The Strokes, Chris Forsyth, Small Black and George Thorogood. #LFGM!

If RtBE were gamblers we may put some dollars on those stacked Cubs...We know the ghost of Steve Goodman is rooting for them to win it again.

Last year was the Cubbies year. We know the ghost of Steve Goodman is still rooting for them.

Well it looks like the Mets won't be the only players (god willing) rocking Citifield this October. The Meadows will be a new festival thrown in Queens, right off the 7 train in Flushing Meadow Park and the Citifield parking lot.
It is a pop/hip hop focused lineup with Kanye West, The Weekend and Chance The Rapper headlining. Honestly it is very underwhelming to us but a few RtBE Favs are mixed in as well with Charles Bradley and Frightened Rabbit both joining the lineup.
Tickets go onsale to the general public tomorrow, those ticket holders who got washed out of Sunday's Governors Ball can buy tickets starting today. All this and more can be found at The Meadows website. Enjoy some video of the artists playing below:

Today should be a national holiday, plain and simple. We will be taking the afternoon off to watch as many games as we can. After a brutal Northeast winter, Baseball can not come soon enough. Here's hoping your favorite team wins, unless you're a Nats fan, let's go Mets!

If that last tune is lost on you, check out the full amazing story here.
We have expressed our love for both NOLA and Game of Thrones here before but this is a pretty god damn cool combo of the two:
The Swamp Donkeys just jumped onto our radar big time. This is a geeky funky way to get after it. When we were in Toronto last year catching some baseball, we were pumped to hear RA Dickey use the original GoT Theme as his entrance music as we have written about that before as well.
Pretty sweet all around. On a sporting note, today starts the World Cup...hope everyone stockpiled sick days....Let's get it started: We Bring The Noise, We Bring The Ruckus....USA AIN'T NUTIN' TA FUCK WIT!!!

Then again baseball should cut out games in Australia if they want to make opening day even more special.
Some good ones today as our Mets take on the Nationals and for a second year in a row we will be eying that Cubbie Pirates match-up because of great fantasy implications (can't get enough of The Shark
and now Liriano joins the squad....oyevey!). We are ecstatic that baseball is back. To celebrate, how about a weird mix of some baseball tunes, also be sure to check out this list Nick Morrison put together for NPR a few years ago about the great mix of jazz and baseball. Have a great day:
A doozy of 2 headliners as RtBE fav's OutKast and our man crush Jack White will be headlining. We aren't too fond of the other headliner, but hell this 3 day festival is going to have to get hit for the first time by us.
Wow those 2 performances are LIVE! Going to be some great sets...and love Big Boi rocking the Dwight Gooden!
The deep acts don't nearly draw us in like the deep acts at Jazzfest, but we will happily cruise the grounds and give them a listen. Here's hoping June in NYC is some nice weather for the action.
So Pearl Jam played Wrigley last week and while the show was interrupted by weather related delay's there were still some cool happenings in Chicago.
One of the biggest was having Mr. Cub himself come out and sing "All The Way" with Eddie Vedder who is a big baseball fan and loves his Cubs.
Below is a video of the song which was inspired by Ernie Banks himself as Banks welcomes everyone to his house.
Pretty cool all around, combining our love of Pearl Jam and Baseball, two things near and dear to our hearts. We can't wait to see Pearl Jam rock out in New Orleans at Voodoo Fest. Here is the full version of the song now:
This is one of our favorite conversations to have at a baseball game as it combines music and America's past time (usually with a beer in hand). We have heard some great answers, everything from deathmetal to the National Anthem to a deathmetal national anthem.
The idea of the National Anthem was a great one from Tom, saying if he was a relief pitcher he would use it so everyone would have to stand up and no one would boo him. Classic.
It is amusing that Lyle Overbay still uses the song that was popular (kinda) when he first got called up in 2001. This post also makes me kinda like Eric Chavez a bit more. While Domonic Brown goes in your face, Chavez is subversive with the "Ice Cream Paint Job", I may have gone Lil' Wayne's take on the beat from No Ceilings though...
You can download that full mixtape here by the way if you don't have it and wonder why people love Wheezy.
My choice for walk up song always changes, I used to say the build up in "Run Like An Antelope" or "Raining In Blood" but I am constantly changing and am sure I will come up with a new one at the next game I attend...
Do you have one? Feel free to leave your choices in the comments...
Big sports day here for RTBE. This morning we had our favorites Chelsea FC holding on for a narrow win in the quarterfinals over the hated Man U via an amazing goal from Demba Ba (with service from Juan Mata)
Bring on Man City at Wembley, the FA Cup will be staying at Stamford Bridge!
So we start the day off on a fantastic note, but things will get even better as the main event starts this afternoon...Opening Day is upon us!!

Today's also a historic day in NYC as both the Mets and the Yanks open the season at home, the first time since 1956 that two teams from this city did that, then it was the Giants and Dodgers who play each other today at 4 on the left coast. I just wish the two NY C games were at staggered times because each game on opening day (hell the whole season) is special.
There are some other intriguing match-ups too, we will be amped for that Reds v Angels duel at 4 which could be a World Series preview and the Cubs v Pirates will have our personal attention for fantasy purposes (C'mon Samardzija!).
Since we often talk music here on the site, let's end the post with some tunes to get you in the mood for what SHOULD be a national holiday. See you at the ballpark!
John Fogerty with the E-Street Band "Center Field"
Hey everybody. This post got delayed a bit, but I have a blog post up on NYPL's site that I think you might get a kick out of regarding the Baseball Hall of Fame and Nicknames:
This summer when Jeff, Hot Tub, Mike and myself drove up to Cooperstown to catch Lee Ranaldo and Wilco play (review here and pics here) we made the obvious trip to the Hall of Fame to check out the history etched there. For those who read the site or know me, my love of baseball knows very few boundaries, and a trip to Cooperstown needs to be done every few years. So much goodness can be seen in those halls and hours can get lost. While checking out the plaques I started taking pictures of some of my favorite nicknames and it was suggested I should do a blog post for this. So during the world series I got one up on NYPL blogs.
Give it a read, feel free to comment (here or there) and let me know what you think....excitingly Spring Training is only a few months away!
RtBE doesn't subscribe to fake opening days, today actually is the real deal in our book, so like last year, let's celebrate with a quote from the patron saint of this blog:

Today we get a fun Verlander vs. Lester Matchup in the early shift as well as my favorite Mets beginning their quest for greatness against the hated Braves. Sure everyone is predicting the Queens Team to have a shatty year, but we are currently in first place...and anything can happen. That is the beautiful thing about opening day...everybody's got a chance.
I will be spending this holiday with some good friends taking in all of the action, you should be too..after all this is America...this is Baseball...this is Opening Day!
Say Hey, It's Opening Day!!! Let's Get It Started!
People
ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you
what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring. ~Rogers Hornsby

It sure as hell doesn't feel like spring out there, but hopefully the Yanks will start on time vs.the Tigers and we can get CC vs. Verlander to start the best season in the world off right. My Mets kick it off tomorrow, so I will be double dipping for the opener this year, and I can't tell if I like the split yet...will know more by Monday.
What is both surprising and delightful is that spectators are allowed, and even expected, to join in the vocal part of the game.... There is no reason why the field should not try to put the batsman off his stroke at the critical moment by neatly timed disparagements of his wife's fidelity and his mother's respectability. ~George Bernard Shaw
So enjoy the event and a special shout out to the Rockem Sockem boys who I will be celebrating with...Ten years fellas...ain't that something?
With those who don't give a damn about baseball, I can only sympathize. I do not resent them. I am even willing to concede that many of them are physically clean, good to their mothers and in favor of world peace. But while the game is on, I can't think of anything to say to them. ~Art Hill
It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. ~A. Bartlett Giamatti
