The group is a personal favorite of RtBE and we reviewed their records and showcased them a while back. We wish we were in New Orleans, but this is the next best thing. To get in the mood here is a tune from the band:
It is of The Stooges LIVE AT GOOSE LAKE: AUGUST 8TH, 1970
This is a cool piece of history and we have been digging on The Stooges a lot this summer in particular. We wrote a lot about this live record in the review, so we will just post a tune and move on.
The first album from Coriky finds the husband and wife team of guitarist Ian MacKaye and Amy drummer Farina teaming up with MacKaye's Fugazi bandmate Joe Lally on bass. The result is a strong self titled debut that has flashes of MacKaye's punk past and lots of Fugazi's angular noise grooves with a more mellowed vibe.
"Clean Kill" the trio's opener and "Too Many Husbands" have both been released for sometime now and the tracks are on the more aggressive side of things with revving guitars and tempos shifts coming in at odd times. Along with songs like "Hard To Explain" they sum up where this collective are with their lives, the tone is menacing and tightly wound, but the tracks end where in the past they would have exploded.
"Have A Cup Of Tea" could be the trios theme song as Lalley's bass line thumps ominously while digital squeaks and a light marching drum move the sounds along as MacKaye sings about still making malotov's in a restrained voice as harmonies with Farina sound sweet as a tale of aged out/stagnate rebels sit down and have the title beverage.
"BQM" displays brief punk aggression as it riffs around with accelerated pace, while Lalley's strong work directs the snake like "Last thing". The chugging "Jack Says" spiffs up a "Louie Louie" groove around Farina's strong vocals before a low key Sonic Youth vibe flows through the Trump take down "Inauguration Day" and album closer "Woulda Coulda" stretches out with blissful ease. Throughout the debut the three participants work incredibly well with each other musically and full band harmonizing adds a new layer to the sound.
More than simply the same style trio (a husband/wife, guitarist/drummer friendly bass player), Yo La Tengo came to mind often as Coriky's songs have an edge to them, but could also be listened to on Sunday morning as they never truly overwhelm with aggression. Who knows if Coriky is a one off outing or will evolve into a lasting Yo La Tengo like project, but whichever way they evolve, their beginnings are strong. _______________________________________ Support the artist, buy the album, stream it on bandcamp or below and peep some video:

This powerful call of hell-fire and brimstone rained down from the mountaintop as Dylan proclaimed his faith proudly, and this was the first song that most of the public heard confirming the fact that Bob did indeed "Go Jesus". It is point and fact with its belief and message. You gotta serve somebody... can't be simpler then that when it comes to faith can it? The original has a driving beat and a propulsion to it that sounds urgent, but not as urgent as Bob sings, reinforcing the proclamation through his powerful lyrics and leaving no man or woman on the sidelines...he brings everyone into this spiritual battle, and whatever your beliefs it is impossible not to feel Bob is committed as he runs through the verses and chorus.

A real great combo the fire and brimstone of religious Dylan and groove of reggae are a perfect match as many artists in this genre dip back into the ancient preaching ways as Dylan did with this tune. The crew on this cover Nasio & Drummie Zeb featuring Incline do a great job as laser like electro keys, toasting freestyle, a killer guitar solo and backup vocals fill out the song in glorious style. A def highlight of this months album focus.
Each August RtBE has had a yearly tradition dating back over twenty years, go to the Travers Stakes in gorgeous Saratoga, NY.
We have attended each year of the horse race since 1998 and the string ends in 2020 (with so many other things) as there will be no fans in attendance at the mid-summer Derby today.
In past years we have posted songs about horses, feeling lucky and playing the ponies, while we are not a big gambler, this annual tradition will be missed. Saratoga is gorgeous this time of year and we even wrote a series about The Grateful Dead enjoying the town in the early days of this site.
Whether it was Lemon Drop Kid, the first Travers winner we picked, or Bernadini holding off Bluegrass Cat in 2006 . Keen Ice upsetting American Pharoah (we had that one) or Arrogate blowing away the field in the fastest race we ever saw (didn't have that one) each Travers day has been special.
The race has been moved up in the racing season, just one more wrinkle for this Covid scared year. While we hope Tiz The Law keeps on trucking, Uncle Chuck scares us and he may be our pick come race time:
While the horses are nice it is the people that make this special and one more thing which can't happen this year has put a damper on the spirits as gathering with long time friends to chat, reminisce and relax will not be happening. 2020 has brought about so many cancellations and changes, but this one ends a very long streak and special event for us. Perhaps we start a new Travers streak next year, or evolve into some other Summer tradition, any which way it shakes out we will have the memories.
