RIP Shane MacGowan

Shane MacGowan has died, he was 65.

The front man of The Pogues (amongst other musical endeavors) was a rebel poet, a world class addict with a Sarlacc Pit of a mouth, and a special symbol to punks with a tinge of the Irish blood (RtBE included). It is amazing he lived to this age with all the abuse he gave his body, yet by extending his life and career, it allowed me to see him at his best and at his worst.

Let's get the worst out of the way first, it was the inaugural Guinness Fleadh at Randall's Island in 1997. Young and excited, I took a bus up with a crew of feisty NYC friends and drunks, a good chunk of whom grew up in Ireland. Having never seen MacGowan he was the clear must see on this day, which hosted a ton of RtBE favorites (Black 47, John Prine, Steve Earle etc.).

Getting a few beers loose then getting close to the stage for his set with the Popes, excitement ran high in the crowd, probably for MacGowan as well as he was completely blitzed, slurring, unintelligible and making it only through a few songs before passing out and being carried off stage while bleeding. Obviously not the best performance, it lived up to the myth and since there were other bands to check out I always will remember it fondly.

I was also lucky enough to catch a reunited Pogues a few times and that was something I never thought I would get to see. Shane got new teeth, and the band was excellent, never better than the first time I saw them in 2006, which I wrote happily wrote about. Seeing him waltzing under the fake snow in NYC was something I will never forget.

MacGowan used to frequent (and get thrown out of) bars I have drank at in Belfast, I have covered his songs in my band, and there has always been that flicker of disturbed glee behind his lyrics and slurred performances. He had that special something, he was the real deal, and if anyone would want you to raise a pint to him when he is gone it is Shane MacGowan, so please do so and play his tunes loud today:

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Wishing everyone a happy safe and fun St. Patrick's Day from RtBE and we might as well throw in a self plug.

Here is Angels & Vagabonds Irish inspired tune, "Queens Boulevard Serenade":

The story goes...in the lead up to our first St. Paddy's Day gig we were working on some traditional Irish songs to play and our lead singer/keyboard player Don McNally realized they were basically all the same chords just re-arraigned.

So the Irish American from Woodside, NY dug into his past and crafted QBS. He brought it to the group and after a few tweaks it was ready for prime time, we actually played it only about a week after it was written. A little inside baseball into our process, now go celebrate by hoisting a pint....Happy St. Paddy's!

Poguetry In Motion Again, March Tour Dates Announced

The Lost Bayou Ramblers are teaming  up with Spider Stacy and Cáit O'Riordan from The Pogues to deliver Poguetry. Their mix of Cajun folk and Irish punk toured right before the pandemic in 2020 and had events cut short (like all of us) so they are hitting the road again.

They will be playing some select cities and hip venues including Brooklyn Bowl in March. RtBE is very excited for this one.

Below is some video to hype up this super cool tour:

Dylan Cover #512 Herbie Hancock and Friends "The Times They Are A Changin'"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a cover by Herbie Hancock & Friends  playing "The Times They Are a' Changin'"

Jazzy January has invade Mondays! All this month we will check out various artists covering Dylan with a jazz vibe.

Thoughts on Original:
Short and sweet from the first time we tackled a cover of this tune:
Well it is his most famous song for a reason, it is one of the greatest ever produced in any genre, ever.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
Herbie Hancock is a jazz legend, and his friends on this track The Chieftains are Irish folk legends. They pair up on this cover and invite even more legends to help out with Toumani Diabaté on kora, as well as Lisa Hannigan - Vocal, Manu Katché - Drums, Larry Klein - Bass, Rhani Krija - Percussion, Lionel Loueke - Guitar.  This is one star studded cover, and on a personal note I got a chance to see both Hancock and The Chieftains (separately) with my father over the years, and both contributed to my personal love of music.

Thoughts on Cover:
RtBE is starting the month with one of the best Dylan covers we have covered in this series as Hancock and crew do a phenomenal job re-imagining this classic. The end of this song feels like it could roll on forever with the musicians all talking to each other with Diabaté's Kora leading the way.

Happy Bloomsday!

Happy BloomsdayRtBE hope to be toasting to the fantastic James Joyce very soon...

See, the best read Joyce...
Here are some ways to celebrate the nerdy holiday.

A man of genius makes no mistakes. His errors are volitional and are the portals of discovery.

We are no geniuses here at RtBE, but we do love us some James Joyce. Just look at this guy:

And his writing is some of the best the English language has ever produced.

Plenty to see and hear and feel yet. Feel live warm beings near you. They aren't going to get me this innings. Warm beds: warm full blooded life.

Amen Brother...RtBE also got to give a cheers to Tom and Lindsey on their anniversary....Slainte!

Album Review: Lankum - The Livelong Day

Lankum
The Livelong Day
***and1/2 out of *****

The contemporary Irish folk band Lankum from Dublin take century old tunes (along with some originals) and embedded them with cryptic haunting arraignments, playing on the dread and bleak desolation folk music can contain, as well as a small glimmer of hope on the horizon.

The opening "Wild Rover" is a good example of this as the track is usually played upbeat and for cheers/laughs. Here the band slows things down and thematically add instrumentation, electricity and a brooding sense of doom. There is a major SunnO))) drone metal element to the folk proceedings as repetition grows into something grander, vibrating on multiple levels.

The band (Ian Lynch – vocals, Uilleann pipes, concertina, tin whistle, percussion Daragh Lynch – vocals, guitar, percussion, piano Cormac MacDiarmada – vocals, fiddle, viola, banjo, double bass, vibraphone, piano, percussion Radie Peat – vocals, bayan, concertina, harmonium, organ, piano, electric organ, harp, mellotron) seem to start small and intimate before layering growing sounds on top of each other.

The droning increases around Peat's haunting vocals for "Katie Cruel" as the song almost stops in it's own muddy tracks a few times as if the band can barely deal with the pain, not particularly enjoyable but certainly affecting. "Bear Creel" and "Ode to Lullaby" are two sides of an instrumental coin as the first uses a fiddle to brighten the mood while the second is based around a booming low end that slowly swells.

The harmonies begin "The Dark Eyed Gypsy" in standard folk fashion before half way through the sonic levels rise while the traditional upbeat "The Pride of Petravore" buries it's tin whistles and lighthearted romps under levels of ominous sludgy warbling, drowning the hope in sonic layers of chaos. Album closer "Hunting The Wren" uses a bass thumping to set the tone and a molasses pace with rising strings and vibrations to close.

While the band uses this glacial pace to increase tension things can also be a bit dull in the moment. However a track like the "The Young People" shows just how this style can be perfectly blended into something larger than it's whole as the acoustic strumming and delicate vocals build then descend then build again, adding a journey that is more nuanced than straight uphill; the track is a highlight on this adventurous album.

Drone-Folk is a genre that at first blush may seem absurd, but Lankum prove that going slowly where others pick fast opens up a world of songs for whole new interpretations on The Livelong Day.
