RtBE are massive Dead fans and have seen Weir live multiple times, while also reviewing his recent releases.. Ace lived a rich and varied life in music and he knew it.
On a personal fan level note, Bobby was the last member of the band to really sink in. Phil and Jerry hit it right away, Brent/Keith were loved early on, then the Rhythm Devils hit home, but it wasn't until a few years of listening to them we stopped skipping some Weir numbers. Since Garcia's passing with various incarnations of the group we were always Team Phil, but when the pandemic hit and we spent even more time with the group. Slowing down and digging deeper, Weir in particular added a fresh new dimension to our ears. Now, it is all good to us.
His strong work in the 80's (carrying the band at times), his underrated vocals, his unique style of rhythm guitar and of course amazing songs like "Black-Throated Wind", "Cassidy", "Greatest Story Ever Told" and "Playin' In The Band" are legendary.
Weir, perhaps more than most, was prepared for death, yet it is still a loss to all as he was still playing and performing strongly. Thankfully, his vast catalog of music will live on. Let's enjoy some of his music today.
