Today we highlight: 'Round Midnight Preserves: Preservation Hall & Guests
Tonight and tomorrow there is a stellar show centered around the institution themselves, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, but also including a wide ranging collection of A-Listers:
Last year this was one of the streams that RtBE loved the most during lockdown. Surely this year will be just as solid. To get in the mood here is a classic from the Hall:
We search the murky back waters of youtube to find full concerts and post them to the site weekly, come back every seven days to help us celebrate Full Show Friday's. These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...This week...The Neville Brothers!
In non pandemic years this would be one of the best weekends of the year, the second weekend of The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Covid-19 canceled it last year and this year it has been delayed, it is currently slated for October (fingers crossed).
So to cheer us up and get in the funky mood today, here are the Neville's from Tip's back in 1991. Make sure to check out WWOZ's Festing in Place all weekend as well. Pro shot, pro sound, full set list below. Enjoy:

In just about an hour WWOZ will start their excellent Festing In Place program, a celebration of New Orleans music in place of the usual Jazz Fest celebration which normally takes place this week in the Crescent City.
Last year it was a ray of musical sunshine that got RtBE and many others through some difficult times, and now it returns with a great selection of artists. The breakdown of the set times into Jazz Fest like cubes are here:
The second weekend looks even better than the first and some of the sets we are really looking forward to dancing in our apartment to are the legendary Irma Thomas, Wilson Pickett, Dr. John and Miles Davis from Jazz Fest's past.
Special attention needs to be brought to one of the first sets this weekend. We can not wait to relive the 2019 set from Samantha Fish which starts at 12pm CDT today. This was one of the best sets we have ever seen over our 11 years of attending the festival and are very excited to relive it.
To get in the mood here is Charmaine Neville singing the classic "You've Got the Right Key, But the Wrong Keyhole":
The New Orleans based piano player Kyle Rousselhas released his newest single, and his debut as a vocalist, titled "Daylight".
A few years back we caught Roussel for the first time in the Jazz Tent down in New Orleans and were blown away. He is super talented and can't wait to hear more from him as "Daylight" combines 2nd line percussion and horns, with modern R&B and gospel. A great mix and here's hoping a full length is coming soon from the artist.
It is of the recent live New York Hardcore show in Tompkins Square Park on Saturday April 24th
This was RtBE's first show since the Drive By Truckers on February 21st 2020. It was just over 14 months between shows and worlds away mentally/physically/emotionally as the world has shifted unthinkably in that time.
While we wished more masks were worn and hope the majority of people were vaccinated, we are over two weeks from our second vaccine and felt the need to see the show. It was a joyous occasion and we were glad to see so many friends who we hadn't seen in months.
While the bands were all very good, they were secondary to the gathering which brought a sense of community back to the LES. While that is not without controversy, RtBE had a great time.
Yola had one of the better debut albums in recent years with 2019's Walk Through Fire. RtBE loved it when it was first heard, dug her live debut in NYC and ranked it high on our year end list. Now she returns with Stand For Myself.
The album will be out on July 30th via Easy Eye Sound Records.
It is of Dinosaur Jr's newest release Sweep It Into Space.
When the trio released their last album, Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not, we ranked all of the Dino Jr albums for Glide. This new release is top notch and would probably fit in around 4th or 5th as this one is truly solid, but every single Dino Jr album is great.

Today we highlight: WWOZ Piano Night
Tonight is a benefit for the best radio station in the universe as WWOZ hosts Piano Night:
In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's artists, Melissa Buckley performing a live cover of "Most of the Time"
Thoughts on Dylan Original From our first cover take on this tune: One of the best songs in Dylan's repertoire from any of his era's and also one of the most important, "Most Of The Time" proved Dylan was far from done as an artist. Showing up on the return to form album Oh Mercy, "Most Of The Time" is a revelation with it's descending bass line and powerfully stark lyrics. There is a palpable sense of desperation, longing, sadness, a nervous sense of things are falling apart around me; this tune touches a nerve and makes you stand up and take notice. Cover:
This is a unique cover that plays with almost spoken word interpretation before singing in a high register. RtBE always digs different takes on Dylan, and this is certainly one.

Today we highlight: TheDirty Dozen Brass Band
After enjoying Festing in Place and our Full Show Friday today how about ending the night with a live show from one of the all time greats who are playing Live From The Funky Uncle:
Today the Rolling Stones album Sticky Fingers turns 50.
When RtBE discussed the Stones in our Masters SeriesSticky Fingers topped our list of favorite studio albums from the band. It is fantastic and deserves to played loud today as it still delivers dangerous rock and roll, adventurous playing and unique English twists on the blues.
It is a quintessential rock and roll record, so to celebrate here are three songs off of it.
We search the murky back waters of youtube to find full concerts and post them to the site weekly, come back every seven days to help us celebrate Full Show Friday's. These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...This week...Galactic featuring Maggie Koerner!
This, in non-pandemic years, would be the first weekend of New Orleans Jazz Fest. So to celebrate let's get down to some Galactic, who play the Fair Grounds every year. The band are ambassadors for their home city as well owning the club Tipitina's and bringing the NOLA flavor everywhere they go.
The festival itself hopes to come back this October, so keep your fingers crossed and enjoy the funky styling of these musicians playing the festival back in 2014 with special guest Maggie Koerner.

To get in the mood here is a tune from the fellows:
It is with great excitement that the first outdoor live show taking place, that RtBE will be attending in over 14 months, is a return of New York Hardcore in Tompkins Square Park on Saturday April 24th.
Black and Blue Productions are putting on the show with NYHC legends Madball and Murphy's Law co-headlining. One of RtBE's favorite new/old hardcore bands Bloodclot will also be on the bill (we loved their debut record, it made our top Ten of 2017) as will The Capturers.
This is a very exciting announcement and we are pumped to attend with our mask safely on. To get in the mood here are some tunes from the artists on the bill. Live Music Lives!
Neil Young has been going through his archive in recent years and releasing lots of material, Way Down in the Rust Bucket is at the top of the heap when it comes to these type of releases from the artist. From the first notes Young and Crazy Horse are on and everything sounds fuzzy and fantastic in their warm lumbering distorted way. The album has a relaxed feeling of an enhanced practice session and that is right in the wheelhouse of one of the best garage bands of all-time.
After the release of the excellent Ragged Glory, Young and Crazy Horse (Ralph Molina – drums, vocals Frank Sampedro – guitar, Stringman, vocals Billy Talbot – bass guitar, vocals) prepped for a world tour with a small show at The Catalyst in Santa Cruz, CA on November 13, 1990. The three set show has long been bootlegged by fans (RtBE included) and delivers three sets of prime Horse in their element. While billed as a tune up show for their world tour the band are loose yet locked in, like only they can be.
One of the appeals of this set for long time fans are rarely played tracks like "Surfer Joe and Moe The Sleaze" "T-Bone" and "Bite The Bullet" but classics are well represented also. Everything off of Ragged Glory gets an airing and every song is played in woolly Horse fashion, Songs like "Country Home", "Love To Burn", "Sedan Delivery", "Mansion on the Hill" and a flowing "Over and Over Again" all are dynamite.
Each live track is worth hearing but some rise even higher as an extended "Danger Bird" soars while the closing trio of "Like a Hurricane", "Love and Only Love" and "Cortez the Killer" are world class, making you think the band could just keep playing forever in this mode.
The only issue with the release is the exclusion of "Cowgirl in the Sand" from this show. It was not officially released because of a minor power outage messed up the recording, but is included on the DVD of the show with lesser front of house mixes. Needless to say Young's detail to sound quality is everywhere as the album sounds glorious.
This album is a must for Crazy Horse fans and if people are interested in diving in deep to the Horse, Way Down in the Rust Bucket isn't a bad starting place. A few years back we dove into Young for our Masters series and ranked his live albums, Weld was released at the end of this tour, a collection of huge arena rockers. After years of listening to the bootleg of this show, the upgraded sound and great album art lead us to place this one above Weld in our personal rankings, but both display the dynamic alchemy onstage when Young and the Horse get rocking.
