Full Show Friday - The Detroit Cobras 10/7/05 - Magic Stick DETROIT, MI

We search the murky back waters of youtube to find full concerts and post them to the site weekly, come back every seven days to help us celebrate Full Show Friday's. These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...This week...The Detroit Cobras!

Been listening to the Cobras a lot this week and Rachel is missed. RtBE was lucky enough to catch this tour when they hit NYC with Cartwright's Reigning Sound opening. This is a hometown show for the Cobras and it smokes.

Fan shot, but it sounds great, and has perfect energy, like being in the crowd:

Live Stream: A Great Night In Harlem: A Benefit for Jazz Foundation of America

We are now heading into the new normal with live music during the Covid-19 and beyond era. Live shows will need to be flexible and live streaming is a great way to keep music going. Streams have become essential for live music junkies like RtBE. Things are (hopefully) improving on the pandemic front but live streams will be an option for artists during the foreseeable future. We will highlight various shows/streams/virtual events for your viewing and listening pleasure and as a way to help out the artists. You can check out our weekly Full Show Friday series for concerts from the past and as always, please support the artists any which way you can.

Today we feature: A Great Night In Harlem: A Benefit for Jazz Foundation of America

A killer lineup for this benefit uptown. Some of RtBE's favorites are there and it will be a very cool show.

Feel free to help out if you can and check it out tonight on FANS. To get in the mood here is Charles Tolliver's Big Band:

Happy Opening Day!

I see great things in baseball.  It's our game - the American game.  It will take our people out-of-doors, fill them with oxygen, give them a larger physical stoicism.  Tend to relieve us from being a nervous, dyspeptic set.  Repair these losses, and be a blessing to us.

~Walt Whitman

RtBE is here to wish you a Happy Opening Day! If you want to read a great piece about baseball check out this excerpt from Roger Angell's The Summer Game

Opening Day should be a national holiday, plain and simple. Once winter is gone (at least officially), Baseball can never arrive soon enough. Here's hoping your favorite team wins, especially if you are a fellow Mets fan. Let's Go Mets!

We know the ghost of Steve Goodman and Eddie Vedder are both rooting for those Cubbies...

Here are some more baseball inspired tunes to start the magical day, when we are all in first place:

Dylan Cover #624 David Broad "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" feat. James Shakeshaft

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's artist, David Broad "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" feat. James Shakeshaft performing a live cover of "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight"

Thoughts on Dylan Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this tune:
A simple little number coming off of John Wesley Harding it discards the lyrical wizardry for a down home spin.  We are rewarded with easy bliss, not often found in Dylan tunes. The emotions displayed by the singer here are heartfelt, hearty and easy going, just like the tune as a whole. Always a pleasant ride, bring that bottle over here...

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
This is RtBE's first time hearing David Broad and James Shakeshift who are guitar players and folk singers from Leeds.

Thoughts on Cover
A cool just straight ahead version of the song with two vocals, two acoustic guitars and a touch of wind int he background. Pleasant indeed.

Album Review: The Black Crowes - Happiness Bastards

Hey all, got a review up @glidemag which you can read Right C'here:

It is of The Black Crowes newest release, Happiness Bastards

RtBE are fans of the Crowes having seen them a ton and reviewed them a bunch. To these ears,
Before the Frost...Until the Freeze was the best from the band, yes, even better than their first two albums. It opened them up to a range of new tunes while they still could rock.

This record feels safe and a touch dull. Not awful, but not memorable or very exciting either.

That said, support the artists, buy the album, read the review and peep some video below:

Dylan Cover #623 AJ Lee & Blue Summit "Meet Me In The Morning"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by AJ Lee & Blue Summit playing "Meet Me In The Morning"

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this tune:
A swaggering track that rose out of the ashes of "Call Letter Blues" (which was later released on The Bootleg Series Volume 1-3) "Meet Me In The Morning" is a shot of blues after the blissfully mournful "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" as it kicks off side two of the famous Blood On The Tracks. The song is one of the ones Dylan recorded in NYC for Blood on the Tracks and it pulses with the city's energy. A cool note about this straight ahead song (which is tailored made for covering) is that Jack White is a big fan, playing it at times at his shows and got Dylan to perform it for the only time ever on 9/19/07 in Nashville, TN.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
This is the first time we have heard AJ Lee & Blue Summit, who are, AJ Lee, | Lead vocals & mandolin Scott Gates | guitar Sullivan Tuttle | guitar Morgan Blaney | bass Jan Purat | fiddle. and are playing this benefit for the Endometriosis Foundation of America at DROM in NYC.

Thoughts on Cover:
A more electric take than might be expected from this more bluegrass/folk leaning outfit, but a cool cover that is eerie and touch dark, yet not overwhelming. It also marks the first time RtBE has ever heard wah-wah on a mandolin which is pretty wild. A really cool cover for a good cause.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Wishing everyone a happy safe and fun St. Patrick's Day from RtBE and we might as well throw in a self plug.

Here is Angels & Vagabonds Irish inspired tune, "Queens Boulevard Serenade":

The story goes...in the lead up to our first St. Paddy's Day gig our band (Angels & Vagabonds) were working on some traditional Irish songs to play and our lead singer/keyboard player Don McNally realized they were basically all the same chords just re-arraigned.

So the Irish American from Woodside, Queens, NYC dug into his past and crafted QBS. He brought it to the group and after a few tweaks it was ready for prime time, we actually played it only about a week after it was written.

A little inside baseball into our process, now go celebrate by hoisting a pint....Happy St. Paddy's!

Album Review: Kim Gordon - The Collective

Hey all, got a review up @glidemag which you can read Right C'here:

It is of Kim Gordon's newest album The Collective

RtBE are huge fans of Gordon and respected more than enjoyed her proper solo debut in 2019's No Home Record

This time around shit has gotten real. While we don't agree with the overhyped title of the review (which we didn't write) the album is top notch. We used the phrase "mental breakdown dance music" in the review and think that sums it up.  Gordon herself has stated:
“On this record, I wanted to express the absolute craziness I feel around me right now. This is a moment when nobody really knows what truth is, when facts don’t necessarily sway people, when everyone has their own side, creating a general sense of paranoia. To soothe, to dream, escape with drugs, TV shows, shopping, the internet, everything is easy, smooth, convenient, branded. It made me want to disrupt, to follow something unknown, maybe even to fail.”
She nailed it, all except the fail part, this record is wild in a good way and a clear success.

Live Review: Phil Lesh Quintet - 3/6/24 @ The Capitol Theatre Port Chester, NY

Phil Lesh Quintet
Live 3/6/24 Capitol Theatre, Port Chester, NY

The most interesting, and consistently excellent, Grateful Dead related music this millennium showed up from 2000-2003 when Phil Lesh formed the “Q” , his quintet of Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, Rob Barraco and John Molo. Lesh knew it was a good thing and a real band as the Q recorded an album and has reformed sporadically over the years. Now as Lesh amazingly celebrates his 84th birthday he brought them back together for two nights at the Capitol Theatre, in Port Chester, NY.

Dylan Cover #622 Lia Havlena "Love Minus Zero/No Limit"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune comes from Lia Havlena and is a live cover of "Love Minus Zero/No Limit".

Thought's on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this tune:
A personal gateway song, the first Dylan love offering that truly spoke to me was "Love Minus Zero/No Limit". It is an easy song to like, with it's sweet melody and one that gets deeper and deeper the more you contemplate the lyrics. Dylan uses some insane imagery to put true love into words with surreal phrasing that delivers the goods in a way that is tough to describe. In one sense, this is peak Dylan, moving with grace, describing things uniquely and just out of reach.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
This is RtBE's first time hearing Lia Havlena who is a folk singer from Nebraska.

Thoughts on Cover:
A pleasant straight ahead, live acoustic cover that showcases Havlena's vocals and strumming. Never over singing or playing, she just delivers the tune in easygoing fashion.  Great way to start the week.

Album Review: Grateful Dead - Dave's Picks 49: Frost Amphitheater 1985

Grateful Dead
Dave's Picks 49: 4/28 & 29/1985
Frost Amphitheater Palo Alto, CA
** out of *****

Standard disclaimer: When reviewing the Dave's Picks series, and really any Grateful Dead release at this point, it needs to be noted that a lot of the truly great shows from the band have already been professionally released. (If new to the band, check out RtBE's Beginners Guide to The Grateful Dead Part's one and two.) With their vast back catalog on archive.org and all of their previous releases The band's selections are running thin when it comes to must own, professionally released shows.

That said, this series still exists for a reason, obsessive fans (like RtBE) will always listen to anything from the band as Dave and his team continue to unearth rare gems.

Dylan Cover #621 Lisa Bastoni "Workingman's Blues #2"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a cover by Lisa Bastoni playing "Workingman's Blues #2"

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this song:
One of Dylan's late career highlights, "Workingman's Blues #2" first appeared on Modern Times and was a stunning reminder of how Dylan can just completely nail it sometimes. The ease with which the piano and song flows out reminds of Dylan's best work, as if the song has always been there and he is just breathing it into existence at this time and place. It owes a debt to Merle Haggard, the Civil War, poet Henry Timrod and thousands of others, but is perfectly Dylan when it comes to the lyrics which bounce all over. A folk song, mistitled a blues song, for the workingman that feels aloof, pure Dylan

I may have been a bit down on the music of Modern Times in my original review (I have softened my stance a bit), but I was right about "Workingman's Blues #2", it stands with the greatest songs he has ever produced.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
RtBE is new to Lisa Bastoni who is a Massachusetts based singer songwriter.

Thoughts on Cover:
This is a fantastic cover of a lesser played Dylan song. Bastoni nails it sonically and sings fantastically. A great cover of a great tune.
