New Zealand songwriter and producer Fazerdaze (aka Amelia Murray) has shared her new single “Bigger”
Regarding the song Murray states:
“I have often felt that ambition and being in the public eye can be a point of tension in my romantic relationships. I think this song is me trying to explore and overcome that with someone I cared about. For the production, I was exploring writing an anti-chorus. The synths do all the work and the vocal melody drops into a talk. I wanted to experiment with strange bendy synths and lean into a cinematic night time world.”
We are now heading into the new normal with live music during the Covid-19 and beyond era. Live shows will need to be flexible and live streaming is a great way to keep music going. Streams have become essential for live music junkies like RtBE. Things are (hopefully) improving on the pandemic front but live streams will be an option for artists during the foreseeable future. We will highlight various shows/streams/virtual events for your viewing and listening pleasure and as a way to help out the artists. You can check out our weekly Full Show Friday series for concerts from the past and as always, please support the artists any which way you can.
Today is Lainey Wilson - Live from Red Rocks
Head on over to VEEPS for more info and tickets. To get in the mood, check out a tune from Wilson below:
In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover from Yopi and Lotta and it is a version of "One More Cup Of Coffee"
Thoughts on Dylan Original: From the first time we tackled a cover of this tune: Bob's story tunes seemed to crest on Desire and "One More Cup Of Coffee" fits in the Western/Biblical/Mystical motif of both "Isis" and "Romance In Durango" but puts fourth a more ominous feel than either. Singing with Emmylou Harris on the original recording a haunting combo of voices which gets along perfectly with violins and other rag tag players from the sessions. A damn good song.
Yopi Jay, Singer-/Songwriter, chant circle singer and sacred-song keeper, has been following the devotional path of Bhakti Yoga with his music for several years. Based in Cologne (Germany) he has been playing kirtan & chant circles all around Germany and Europe. Together with violin player Lotta Corradini and fellow musicians Yopi & Lotta have released an album with sacred world music, named „Namasté Pachamama“. Since 2021 Yopi, Lotta and the Indian Tabla Master Debasish Bhattacharjee have started a new album project named "Corazon del Mundo". Their songs invoke the sentiment of devotion and dedication to a higher consciousness, of Love and Oneness.
Together with the people Yopi sings Bhajans and Kirtan from ancient India, Medicine Songs from South America and Sacred Chants from other parts of the world and in various languages. Wherever he plays his voice and music have the ability to open hearts and make people sing along.
Thoughts on Cover:
A very nice cover, that is fairly straight ahead with acoustic guitar, violin and male/female vocals. A pleasant way to start the week.

Enjoy the Tiny Desk concert from NPR studios by Cypress Hill. Full info on the session below:
Bobby Carter | July 20, 2023 The first thing I noticed as Cypress Hill strolled into NPR headquarters was Sen Dog cradling his signature bucket hat. I asked him if my assumptions were correct; it was indeed the original hat seen in all the videos from the early '90s. Before I could process that confirmation, B Real asked me, "Yo, is your greenroom a greenroom?" We got everything we expected and more from Cypress Hill at the Tiny Desk. While the term "pioneer" is used loosely in pop culture today, few terms describe Cypress Hill's impact over the past three decades more adequately. They are the first Latino hip-hop group to achieve platinum and multi-platinum status. B Real, Sen and producer DJ Muggs crafted a sound in the '90s that stretched beyond regional boundaries. It was dark, psychedelic and at times directly addressed mental health before the topic was commonplace. Many dismissed the group as "stoner rappers," yet the members were fervent advocates for the legalization of weed long before it came to fruition. Touring members Eric Bobo and DJ Lord joined the duo along with Money Mark from Beastie Boys fame. The band summoned a horn section to fill out this rare minimalist approach to five, funky Cypress Hill things. Between each song, B Real took his time to shed some historic light on the group's journey thus far.

London-via-Cornwall indie-rock quartet The Velvet Hands are back with a new single, “Meet Me In The City”
The band explain:
“”Meet Me In The City” is one of the oldest tracks on ‘Sucker Punch’, it was the first song we wrote after our debut album. It’s a carefree and fun track, written in Falmouth back when the biggest drama was who was sleeping with who and when the next party was.”
It is almost officially Fall now, but this is a solid Spring album. Will make you yearn for the blooming of plants, def the best/most accurately titled album of the year.
Boston heavy metal unit BLOOD LIGHTNING (with members of GOZU, Sam Black Church, Worshipper, We're All Gonna Die) have released a new single "The Dying Starts".
In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by John Mayer playing "Buckets of Rain"
Thoughts on Original: From our first take on a cover of this tune: Dylan's mid career masterpiece closes out with this song and to me it always seemed tacked on whimsically. After going through a ton of raw emotion with "Idiot Wind" and other tunes, Blood on the Tracks finishes with this ditty. Honestly never one of my favorites, it acted more as a palate cleanser and a sweet one at that.
Cover:
Thoughts on Cover Artist: Having grown from TMZ focal point pop artist to now revered Dead & Co lead guitarist, Mayer has run the gamut musically and is still growing. Our only time seeing him we were really impressed with his playing...until he tried to cover Jimi Hendrix and then we thought this was a kid with a lot of talent who needed to age a bit in all aspects. He has done that admirably.
Thoughts on Cover:
This is a dynamite solo acoustic cover of the song. Mayer plays it serious and nails it on all fronts. Well done.

The UK Folk Artist, Beans on Toast, has a new album coming out, The Toothpaste and The Tube, and here is the first single "The Golden Lion".
Regarding the single:
“The characters in the “The Golden Lion” are real people, as is the bizarre history of the town that the song alludes to. I played a show at the pub last year and was so inspired by the town, the pub and its people that I couldn't help but write a folk song about it. As with the town, the song is quintessentially English, mysterious and boozy.”
It is of Organ Fairchild's newest release, Leisure Suit.
This is a cool collection of instrumentals that pulls from the jam band world with a lot of funky jazzy nuances thrown in. A fun trio from Buffalo worth keeping an eye on.
Oslo-native and up-and-coming DJ/producer WNDR is back with his brand-new single "Falling Down Down" via Icons Creating Evil Art.
Speaking of the new single, WNDR said:
"Falling Down" is one of my darker tracks. I’ve been experimenting with sound choices to give my sets a more dynamic feel. With this one I think my followers will be positively surprised, that’s what I’m hoping for at least..
The Queen Diva returns from a nine year break since her debut full length, 2014's Just Be Free. Central City is an ode to bounce, hip hop, New Orleans and more as Big Freedia throws it back fiercely throughout the head bopping, gut busting, ass shaking LP.
Freedia has of course released music, but now comes a full offering that combines his worlds and holds up well throughout the sixteen track, forty five minute run time, and while there are a few very high profile guests, Central City is all Big Freedia. Opening with the strong "Central City Freestyle" the bounce heavy beats blast out ominously, as if shaking that ass was the most important thing in the world...and it just might be.
That feeling flows directly into "Big Thyme" as danger lurks in the bass while digital bleeps rampage around and Freedia drops some NOLA inspired lyrics. Some of the more direct, conventional tracks lag such as "Life Lessons" and "Motivate Ya" (featuring Kelly Price) both seemingly out of place on the record.
However, two of the strongest tracks are fairly straight ahead as well, "Bitch You Want" (featuring Faith Evans) brings it back to hip-hop's glory years with a dynamite all around effort while "El Niño" (featuring Lil Wayne and Boyfriend) is a standout number with Weezy cramming bar after bar into his allotted slot; the only negative here is the track could have gone on even longer and still been bad ass.
Another winner is the pop/bounce gem of "$100 Bill" (featuring Ciara) matching the sweet voice of Ciara with the bombastic Freedia was a deft touch as producers Glasper, MadisonLST, and Max & Kyle spun gold. Freedia's hip-hop leanings push in the right direction as "Pop That" flourishes with huge beats, and "Bigfoot" slams with the most monstrous bass recorded in years; these drops go deep. Even when Freedia strips down for more minimalist modern hip-hop/r&b on "You Already Know" (featuring Sonyae) there are still percussive bounce parts to the procedures.
"Throw It Back" slams out the bounce Freedia is famous for while also getting funny and catty to end, the humor continues on the record's intermission as Freedia gets down with "Pepto Interlude" which is just what it says it is, over bumping beats.
That bounce style has infiltrated mainstream since Freedia first burst on the scene, but The Queen Diva still knows how to get the asses moving and the hardcore bounce appeal plays out on a number of great bangers here including "NOLA Babies" and "Booty Like A Drummer" while "Gin In My System" goes above and beyond, overloading the track with vocals, beats and layers upon layers of sound in positive, futuristic fashion.
A long time coming, Big Freedia returns to the top of the bounce mountain and beyond with her/his party popping, winning album, Central City.
The NYC based trio Princess Goes includes vocalist, lyricist, musician and actor Michael C. Hall (Dexter, Six Feet Under, Lazarus) alongside keyboardist Matt Katz-Bohen (Blondie, Cyndi Lauper) and drummer Peter Yanowitz (The Wallflowers, Morningwood), have released their official video for their new single “BLUR”.
In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by David Bromberg playing "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry"
Thoughts on Original: From the first time we tackled a cover of this song: One of my favorite titled songs in the Dylan catalog, for some reason the title just nails an elusive feeling and perfectly works with the tune. Also contains multiple epic lines, my favorite being "I wanna be your lover babe/I don't wanna be your boss", AMEN brother Bob. A pretty straight forward blues number musically that lends itself to cover attempts, leading to... Cover:
Thoughts on Cover Artist: David Bromberg was a contemporary of Dylan on the 60's Greenwich Village folk scene. He is also someone Bob had play on a lot of his studio efforts. It is fun to hear David step out and sing one of Bob's bluesy numbers.
Thoughts on Cover:
Very nuanced playing and singing by Bromberg, raising up this cover with a quiet sense of importance. A very cool take on the tune.

For the 20th entry into the GarciaLive collection we travel to June 18, 1982 at Cape Cod Coliseum in South Yarmouth, Massachusetts. The release also includes three bonus tracks from JGB's show from June 1st, 1981 at The Stone in San Francisco with a different, more scaled down version of the band and this certainly is a large bonus.
JGB constantly shifted and changed depending on moods, Garcia's choices etc. For the main portion of this release the lineup was Jerry Garcia – guitar, vocals, Melvin Seals – organ, Jimmy Warren – electric piano, John Kahn – bass, Bill Kreutzmann – drums, Liz Stires – vocals, Julie Stafford – vocals. This larger band has a full sound and while there are a few technical difficulties, overall things are solid on the production/sound front.
The night opens with just average to forgettable versions of "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" and "Valerie" as the first twenty minutes here are the longest slog of the show. Things really come into focus with a cover of The Beatles "Dear Prudence", which rides on the funky bass work of Kahn and excellent vocals/guitar flourishes from Garcia.
JGB could at times be a glacial affair, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. "Mississippi Moon" is a crawling, yet passionate ode to his long time friend Peter Rowan with Seals organ work a highlight, as is Garcia's multiple guitar tones. On the flip side, Garcia's version of "Simple Twist of Fate" is so slowly paced it is yawn inducing, killing any emotion the classic tune would normally bring.
"Don't Let Go" also begins life with a languid lope, but as the song evolves it turns into the most Grateful Dead sounding jam of the night, pushed forward by Kreutzmann's drumming which gets a solo showcase before the track wraps up.
The most energetic the outfit gets on this night is an upbeat workout during "Run for the Roses" which has great wah-wah work from Garcia, matching the strong organ work from Seals. This first portion of the release ends with a lightly funky version of "They Love Each Other", a showcase for Warren's electro-keys and the backup singers harmonizing with Garcia. If the main show was all that arrived with this release, it would be fine, say two and half stars; an average JGB release. However the added music from 6/1/81 elevates GarciaLive 20 higher.
The bonus material does not include Stires and Stafford, Kruetzmann is also off the kit with Daoud Shaw replacing him on the drum throne. While the opening "Sitting Here in Limbo" is fairly par for the JGB course, with a loose groove and excellent flurries up and down the fretboard from Garcia, "After Midnight" raises the figurative roof.
This explosion of energy is triggered by Shaw whose deploys an almost disco inspired, upbeat drum pattern to get the band kicking it all up about five gears; these sixteen and a half minutes are the most energetic JGB has ever sounded to these ears. The band knew they were onto something special as each one gets in on the act and they fly as a unit.
The energy stays incredibly high for the following "Deal" where Garcia's closing solo is burning as it slams itself directly into "Tangled Up in Blue". The two versions of Dylan tunes that JGB showcase on this release couldn't be more diametrically opposed, as the joyous rambunctiousness takes over for "Tangled Up In Blue" and goes over the top.
While the Grateful Dead were known for emotional journeys, peaks and valleys, Jerry Garcia Band has always been very laid back, at times to the groups detriment. The first part of GarciaLive 20 is fairly straight ahead with some highs and lows, but this release is worth it to hear the bubbling, upbeat bonus material alone.
Minneapolis-based band FènixDion Announce Debut Album Sugar out October 21; Share New Single & Video "Morals Might Bite"
About the song FènixDion's Keston Wright says:
"The song is about the fear of change as well as the inability to let go of emotional attachments which can inhibit our growth as individual people and communities."
The quartet from Asheville, North Carolina, Wednesday, put their '90's rock love and country twang side by side, and in some cases overlapping in what they call "country-gaze", as Rat Saw God is a coming of age album written in/about/during the internet era via the Southern states.
The group of Karly Hartzman - Guitar & Vocals, MJ Lenderman - Guitar & Back-up Vocals, Xandy Chelmis - Lap Steel, Margo Schultz - Bass, Alan Miller - Drums, were produced by Alex Farrar; the outfit has been at this for a few years now but this time feels like a break through.
The band uses the term country-gaze to describe themselves and that is spot on, they can shift from side to side of that spectrum, but overall, Hartzman's tales of backwoods bleakness mixed with humor fits snuggly within large loud guitars and pounding drums. Opener "Hot Rotten Grass Smell" is a barn burning, buzz bin blast from the mid '90's that cuts out too fast, but the album highlight arrives next.
"Bull Believer" is the essence of this outfit with Hatrzman both recalling specific details and yelping gutturally as she dives into the fuzz and crunch throughout the eight and half minute track that resolves with a huge My Bloody Valentine like ending. A dynamite song and one that defines this band.
It isn't the only winner here though as "Got Shocked" uses big drums from Miller with layers of strings from Lenderman, Chelmis and Hatrzman. "Bath Country" drives home a pulsing road-trip through the south by a daughter of god with Schultz's bass pushing the way forward throughout the overloaded feedback chaos of loud guitars.
The flip side to the shoegaze love is the loose country twang from the efforts like "Formula One" which keep Hartzman's specifics and humor front and center around the Americana sound. Things are pushed into Nashville pop rock territory for the smells like a single, "Chosen To Deserve" which is saved by Hartzman's less than saccharine lyrics and mild annoyance vocals. The details of "Quarry" also stand out as lived in, while the melody is reminiscent of The Kinks "Waterloo Sunset" and "Turkey Vultures" encompasses that country-gaze label exceptionally with building tension, squirrely guitars, and lap steel work.
The only negative here is the album ends with two fairly non-descript numbers ("What's So Funny" and "TV in the Gas Pump") after setting such a high bar previously. Not a bad problem to have when Hartzman's tales, and the bands power, shines through consistently on Wednesday's best effort of their career, Rat Saw God.
The Rochester, UK based artist Funke and The Two Tone Baby has a new single out, "Can't Stop The Music".
The artist says the following about the tune:
“”Can’t Stop The Music” is my feel-good summer hit. I gave it its first proper airing at Glastonbury 2023, and hearing a whole field singing this (as then) unknown song back at me full pelt was one of the greatest feelings I’ve had this year. The track’s final hook resonated heavily with the group, as well as with live audiences over the summer. “Can’t Stop The Music” is my ode to unbridled and wholehearted positivity. In the times when you’re the most sad, deflated and defeated, music is the one thing that will never stop, can never be taken away from you and, if you use it correctly, can change the mood of your entire day.”
In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by Before The Flood playing "Union Sundown"
Thoughts on Original: From what has become an annual tradition here and here: Wanted to pick this one for Labor Day as it is Dylan's take on the lack of US manufacturing jobs as well as the increasing flux of capitalism in society and the death of unions. The idea of greed taking over is nothing new, but this song seems to come from an impulsive Dylan (a lot do) and shows up on Infidel's of which Dylan has commented something along the lines of "Those songs stuck around too long". Ideas seem to be a bit jumbled on this disk, but not on this tune, his lament at no good paying job for American workers is clear, but he isn't passing the buck. It is all of HIS products that are foreign made, this isn't a plea for change as a younger Dylan might have done; it is a simple statement of fact...and a sad one at that. Having grown up in a extremely pro-Labor house hold I just wanted to point this tune out and the fact that Dylan wrote it almost 30 years ago, and things have only gotten worse... Happy Labor Day....

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
This is the first time we are hearing Before The Flood a Bob tribute group from Detroit. I am sure they have a lot of feelings about Unions.
Thoughts on Cover:
A fairly straight ahead cover that has muscle and energy with great backing vocals and heavy riffing.
