Dylan Cover #554 Patterson Hood & Jay Gonzalez "Blind Willie McTell"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a cover by Patterson Hood & Jay Gonzalez playing "Blind Willie McTell"

This month we are doing another special focus in RtBE's Dylan Covers series. In the past we have highlighted The ByrdsCoulson-Dean-McGuiness-FlintThe HolliesJoan OsbourneMountainBetty LeVette , Reggae Covers and many more.

This month we highlight Dylan...Revisited for a full month of Dylan Covers.

Thoughts on Dylan's Original:
(From the first time we tackled a cover of this tune)
Ahh...the forgotten masterpieceThis is the song that confirms that Dylan's outtakes are better then most artists best efforts.  Left off of Infidels and to this day only Dylan himself knows why, it was discovered by most via the amazing Bootleg Series 1-3.  There are few better then this haunting jaunt through East Texas, and including it on that 1983 record would have solidified a mixed release.  The lyrics seem to burn into your ears as the playing is up to the task as well.  Gorgeous all over.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
RtBE rate Hood and Gonzalez incredibly highly. The duo play in Drive-By Truckers, one of the best American Bands of all-time. We love DBT's albums, rating them in our end of decade look back and in 2020 as well. Also really dug Jay's solo album released last year.

Thoughts on Cover:
A cover that builds but moves at a slightly brisker pace. Patterson sings the haunting words while Gonzalez builds the sonic structure around him. Good but not quite great to these ears. Would still love to hear DBT tackle this live.

Celebrating The Halloween Spirit Through Songs

A few years ago, one of the best blogs out there, WFMU's Rock and Soul Ichiban put together a great collection of Halloween inspired tunes and playlists.

They have crafted one dealing with ghosts which you can directly download. Another that tackles vampires and you can grab that one directly as well. Now there is also Weird-O-Matic streaming and a you can also drink a spooky cup o' Alligator Wine!

All of these are fantastic and as always Ichiban gives us old songs that are brand new to RtBE and also flat out awesome!

I mean how could we have missed The Bar-Kay's "Holy Ghost" for all of these years?

Damn that is some funky stuff. WFMU Rock and Soul Ichiban always delivers the goods, but in 2014 they got some help from their friends over at Fringe Factory who offered up a Halloween themed show themselves right here.

Here are a few songs that jumped out to us from these shows/free downloads and of course it wouldn't be Halloween without the "Monster Mash" and Elvira. She closes out our Halloween focus with her Third Man Records release "2 Big Pumpkins" written by the B-52's Fred Schneider:

RIP Jerry Lee Lewis

Jerry Lee Lewis has passed away, he was 87

RtBE are huge fans of The Killer, and got the chance to see him live at Town Hall years ago and loved it, but he was a complicated man with many flaws.

The best rock bio we ever read was about Lewis, and we wrote about him when we did our Masters Series a few years ago, ranking his greatest hits only behind Little Richard and Chuck Berry, ahead of even Elvis. A giant when it comes to the birth of rock and roll, Lewis may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.

Turn the songs up load and let'em rip tonight:

Happy 25th Anniversary to Phish's Slip Stitch and Pass

Today marks the 25th anniversary of Phish's official live release Slip Stitch and Pass

So let's take a second to celebrate this record, the second 'official' live release from the jamband legends. Phish followed in the Grateful Dead's tradition of allowing fans to trade tapes of all of their live shows, so there were thousands of hours of live music already circulating from the band. Their most popular official album was A Live One released only three years earlier in 1995.

Album Review: Osees - A Foul Form

Osees
A Foul Form
***and1/2 out of *****

The newest offering from the long running, but constantly shapeshifting Osees (or Thee Oh See's, OSC etc) makes a move directly to hardcore, punk and post-punk offerings with roots in the early 80's for this release. A Foul Form is a lo-fi blast of static laced frenetic energy.

Live Review: Anthony D'Amato - Live at Mercury Lounge 10/22/22

Anthony D'Amato
Live at Mercury Lounge NYC 10/22/22

To celebrate the release of his new album At First There Was Nothing, Anthony D’Amato performed at Mercury Lounge on Saturday with some friends, onstage and in the crowd, helping out with singalongs. The early show (7pm start time) necessitated a tight set with little chatter between songs as the band and D’Amato got right to business.

New Single from Taylor Sanders "Firecracker"

The new single from Taylor Sanders is titled "Firecracker".

The tune is a mix of pop/country as Sanders uses sultry big beats and a touch of twang to deliver the tracks catchy chorus and verses.

Debut Single from The Sleeping Souls "Liar/Lover"

The debut single from The Sleeping Souls arrives as the slow burning "Liar/Lover".

The band came together backing Frank Turner and now release their first single, with the full album due out in Autumn 2023. Regarding the song:
“We lie to ourselves and each other as easy as drawing breath. Every lover lies. “Liar/Lover” is about that moment in the breakdown of a relationship when you accept that there’s no repair: only ownership of your own part in its failure.”

Dylan Cover #553 Courtney Marie Andrews "To Ramona"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a cover by Courtney Marie Andrews  playing "To Ramona"

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this tune:
"To Ramona" is on the personal quotient of Another Side of Bob Dylan as Dylan balanced political works like "Chimes of Freedom" with more intimate and humorous songs. That album is transitional while possessing some amazing songs and a lot which show the breezy greatness of Dylan. "To Ramona" in particular was recorded in one session as Dylan used a Mexican folk song for inspiration and his personal relationship with Joan Baez apparently as the lyrical topic. While the song seems so easy for Dylan, thousands of songwriters would kill for some of these stanzas, a really dynamite, if understated, tune.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
This is our first time coming across Courtney Marie Andrews

Thoughts on Cover:
A delicate, direct offering of the sweet soft song, sung and played beautifully by Andrews.

Album Review: Flagboy Giz - I Got Indian In My Family

Flagboy Giz
I Got Indian In My Family
**** out of *****

Back in 1976 The Wild Tchoupitoulas album fantastically melded the funk of The Meters and Allen Toussaint to Mardi Gras Indian chants while exposing the tradition to a much wider audience (and also inspiring The Neville Brothers to record together). Now in 2022 that tradition morphs with the times, but the emotions are the same as Flagboy Giz drops I Got Indian In My Family, a hip-hop and bounce banger, moving The Wild Tchoupitoulas back onto the radios of New Orleans and beyond.
