New Single/Video From The D.O.O.D. "Final Girl"

The Sarasota, FL based metal band The D.O.O.D have released a new single "Final Girl".

Check out the tune below:

Album Review: Max Boogie Overdrive - Stoned Again

Max Boogie Overdrive
Stoned Again
**and1/2 out of *****

The debut record from L.A. based hard rockers Max Boogie Overdrive is an ode to the smoke filled '70's heavy metal the band loves, as Stoned Again stomps out of speakers. From the album title and the retro cover art (that probably works under a black light) you know what the band is shooting for, and they deliver.

New Video/Single from The Hard Quartet "Rio's Song"

The second single released from The Hard Quartet is titled "Rio's Song" and while the video is a fun homage to The Rolling Stones "Waiting On A Friend", the song itself is a winner all around.

Dylan Cover #645 Jesse Stone Creatchman ft. Joel Zifkin & The Moonshiners "Isis" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune comes from Jesse Stone Creatchman ft. Joel Zifkin & The Moonshiners and is a live cover of "Isis"

Thoughts on Dylan Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this tune in the series:
Desire is such a thick album, Dylan's most complex story songs seem to hover in and around it, and not all are winners...."Isis" is though.  A great song that manages to engage even without a chorus. It is one of Bob's more "mystical" tunes and lures most people in the first time they hear it...before the mp3 age it came right after the powerful "Hurricane" and transforms the album from timely to timeless.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
RtBE have not heard of Jesse Stone Creatchman ft. Joel Zifkin & The Moonshiners before. Jesse Stone Creatchman is a Canadian musician, singer-songwriter and songwriter as are Joel Zifkin and the Moonshiners.

Thoughts on Cover:
An upbeat rocking version that moves quickly through the wild story song that has the crowd up and moving. Delivered well, with passion and power.

Dylan Cover #644 Bolt Hill Band "Tangled Up In Blue" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by Bolt Hill Band performing "Tangled Up In Blue"

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this track:
Wow. The song that never ends, the tune that might just best sum up Dylan, if that is remotely possible. Dylan constantly toyed with this song (check out the Rolling Thunder and Real Live version's if you haven't yet) and even he knows it can't stay stagnant in one form for long, so covering it is a good bet.  Needless to say it is in the top 5 greatest songs he ever wrote if we were ranking them...hmm.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
RtBE have never come across the Bolt Hill Band before, they are a bluegrass band from New England.

Thoughts on Cover:
The bluegrass twist is a nice touch, but this song is so great, any version would be pleasurable. That said, this is well done, with slight tempo shifts, solid singing and excellent musicianship.

Album Review: Little Feat - Sam's Place

Little Feat
Sam's Place
***and1/2 out of *****

The first studio album in over twelve years from the current incarnation of Little Feat is a bit of shift for the band. The group has always crisscrossed the American musical landscape playing everything from rock, funk, folk, jazz, country and New Orleans swamp boogie, back to back with ease. Now they focus on one genre throughout a full record, the blues, as Sam's Place features Sam Clayton on lead vocals as the group tackles a bunch of tunes made famous by Willie Dixon and Muddy Waters.

Dylan Cover #643 Todd Snider "Visions of Johanna" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's artists, Todd Snider performing a cover of "Visions of Johanna"

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this tune:
One of the clear high points in Dylan's poetic songwriting, "Visions of Johanna" is a complete stunner, especially the first time you encounter it. Now (on a personal note) if that first encounter just happens to be a hot sweaty night, in the heart of the urban village which Dylan roamed about 30 years before and you happened to be doing the same god damn thing, then so be it. Even if your personal take is different it is hard to wrap your brain around the lyrics and the more you listen the more the mystery deepens. It is elusive, bright, cunning, dismissive, iconic, ironic and tossed off all at once. It is mega and it is nothing...and I can't be more vague than that. Musically he couldn't get it right until he went down to Nashville and it says something that he stuck with this song (unlike say..."She Belongs To Me") and got a version that is magical musically as well, just listen to that bass line throughout from Joe South...a crowning success all around.
The closest I ever got to the sound I hear in my mind was on individual bands in the Blonde on Blonde album. It's that thin, that wild mercury sound. It's metallic and bright gold, with whatever that conjures up.
Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
RtBE really dig Todd Snider, and have talked about him multiple times in the past.

Thoughts on Cover:
Well Snider begins the song by saying he can't really do cover songs. While it isn't perfect, it is a fun run through from the troubadour. A valiant effort that is done well and moves along brightly.

Album Review: Dr. Dog - Dr. Dog

Dr. Dog
S/T
**** out of *****

The Philadelphia, PA based Dr. Dog just seemed like one of those bands that were lifers, locked into delivering their easy flowing retro rock for eternity. When they announced the end of their touring life and members went their separate ways in 2021 it was quite surprising, and while technically the band didn't "break-up" it sure felt like no new Dr. Dog tunes were going to be released following 2018's Critical Equation.

Album Review: Kibby - Whatever Happened To Honor

Kibby
Whatever Happened To Honor
*** out of *****

The Manhattan based artist Kibby developed a goal, to release a new album every year for ten straight years. Now, with Whatever Happened To Honor they are half way to that goal as the fifth release from Kibby is a mix of grunge/pop/rock all filtered through a bedroom based, DIY style.

Dylan Cover #642 Walk Off The Earth "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a cover by Walk Off The Earth playing " A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall"

Thoughts on Original
:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this song:
Dylan singing from a position of fear as he poetically discusses the Cuban Missile Crisis and the possibility of Nuclear annihilation. Dylan also mentioned in Chronicles that the song was inspired by a feeling he got when reading microfiche newspapers in the New York Public Library: "After a while you become aware of nothing but a culture of feeling, of black days, of schism, evil for evil, the common destiny of the human being getting thrown off course. It’s all one long funeral song." An apt description and a powerful song from a young songwriter.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
This is our first time coming across Walk Off The Earth

Thoughts on Cover:
An excellent acoustic duet that works on every level. It gives the song a bit of a twist with the male/female dynamic, but keeps the power of the original. Top notch cover.

Voodoo Club(暴動クラブ) Release New Single "Born to Kill"

The Japanese based retro rockers Voodoo Club(暴動クラブ) release their raw garage punk on their newest single "Born To Kill".

The track kicks ass with rough power, check it out below:

Remembering Jerry Garcia

On this day way back in 1942 Jerome Garcia was born and as we have done in the past we wanted to take a second to remember Jerry in the best possible way, by listening to his music.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/brentdpayne

To kick things off how about an interview with Branford Marsalis (Go Mets!) Scott Poulson-Bryant, Anthony Decurtis and others on what it was like to play with Jerry and the Grateful Dead.

In past years we have focused on full shows from The Grateful Dead (who we featured in our Master series as well), but here are a few Jerry Garcia Band songs.

Enjoy them on this great day...oh and also, Happy Birthday Meg!
