Infinity Song
Metamorphosis Complete
***and1/2 out of *****
The sibling outfit Infinity Song return with Metamorphosis Complete on Roc Nation. The soft rock, throwback album focuses on the groups rich harmonies and easy singing.
The band, Abraham, Angel, Israel and Momo Boyd have mastered singing together from a young age and bring their gospel choir experience into the realm of singer/songwriter, '70's inspired efforts, while adding a few modern twists.
Opener "I Want You Back" feels straight out of Paul McCartney's mid 70's solo career even down to the outro guitar riff while "Lotus" strums acoustic guitar and recalls classic Fleetwood Mac. Infinity Song's love for Fleetwood Mac doesn't stop there though as the band deliver a strong cover of "Dreams" which is fairly stripped down musically, paying homage, but also focusing on the singing, allowing the vocalists to entwine and soar.
The lead single "Hater's Anthem" plays the most modern with a mix of odd acoustic instruments meshed into a bouncy backing as lyrics and singing calls attention to modern jealousies and strife. The strong power ballad "Slow Burn" is a winner, showcasing the vocals while emotionally hitting home via the rising backing sound.
The band takes some chances, such as on the overly dramatic "Comedy" which adds too much into the song, overloading the track with Broadway-like directness. Much better is when the band flirts with heavier rock stylings such as on the angsty "More Beautiful" which is moody and has rage vibrating at the edges or the tense building of the interestingly experimental "Metamorphosis" which plays like a Silversun Pickup's outtake in the best ways.
The quartet wrap up the record with the strong effort "The Sunshine", a bright pop offering that uses strings and more pristine vocals to close out Metamorphosis Complete on a shining note. Infinity Song use their talents with aplomb, resulting in a solid record from a group clearly on the rise.
