Dylan Cover #443 The Mighty Diamonds "Lay Lady Lay"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a cover by The Mighty Diamonds playing "Lay Lady Lay".

This month we are doing another special focus in RtBE's Dylan Covers series. In the past we have highlighted The ByrdsCoulson-Dean-McGuiness-FlintThe HolliesJoan OsbourneMountainBetty LeVette and more. Now the spotlight shines on various reggae artists from Is It Rolling Bob? A Reggae Tribute to Bob Dylan.
We have covered a song from this collection in our Dylan Cover Series before, so we will skip Toots this month even though that is a good one from this collection.

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we addressed a cover of this tune:
Excellent track and the first time the world heard Dylan's new singing style, which would only last for Nashville Skyline. This song is the standout track from this album, it is a classic and so simple, yet sweet and timeless. One of Dylan's best tracks, this phase was the the closest to "country" he ever got and "Lay Lady Lay" is an overall fantastic piece of music.

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
RtBE knew about The Mighty Diamonds before ever hearing them sing a note as one of our favorite Phish covers has always been "Have Mercy". We found the original and have dug their sweet singing styled reggae ever since.

Thoughts on Cover:
A chill cover that just stays out of that easy listening reggae-light zone. We hope you enjoyed this month's focus on reggae covers of Bob Dylan tunes.  Support all the artists and buy the album for even more covers.

Tom Petty's Wildflowers & All The Rest Coming in October

RtBE has written in the past about how much we enjoy Tom Petty's Wildflowers, now comes news that there is a re-release with bonus tracks coming titled Wildflowers & All The Rest.

Very exciting news and Glide has the full breakdown but this stood out to us:
Tom had always intended to release the second half of the album—a collection he named All The Rest, featuring ten songs from the Wildflowers recording sessions that were left off the original version and five unreleased tracks (different versions of four other songs would appear on the soundtrack to the 1996 film, She’s The One).

Here is the title tracks home recording as we look forward to this release on 10/16:

RIP Riley Gale

Riley Gale, lead singer of Power Trip has passed away, he was 34.

In one of the oddest coincidences, RtBE just published a review of Power Trip's recent live release this morning (scheduled for today weeks ago) and now see the news that sadly the lead singer of the band has passed away. We dig their studio album Nightmare Logic rating it highly among 2017 releases

Sad news as he was just 34 years old and the band was on the rise. Here is some of his music to mark his passing:

Album Review: Power Trip - Live in Seattle 05.28.2018

Power Trip
Live in Seattle 05.28.2018
*** out of *****
The Dallas, TX based metal band Power Trip have released a live album to their fans while the groups is locked down from touring due to Covid-19. The album captures the bands tour from a few years ago as Live in Seattle 05.28.2018 finds the players (Riley Gale (vocals), Chris Ulsh (drums), Chris Whetzel (bass), Blake Ibanez (guitar), and Nick Stewart (guitar)) in fiery form.

Opening with the brief "Drown (Intro)". the band gets the crowd raging before "Divine Apprehension" sets the screeching Slayer meets Pantera tone for this evenings chaos. Ulsh drums dominate "Suffer No Fool" which is dedicated to longtime fans as Gale screams through "Sould Sacrifice" the ripping opener from their best studio album Nightmare Logic.

The crossover thrash sound keeps pummeling for "Executioners Tax" and "Crucifixation" which hit like sledgehammers with their mosh ready sections, flights of si string fury and trudging low end. "Heretic's Fork" and "Firing Squad" use the Ibanez and Stewart guitar riffs as they blast around each other with chunky down strokes and lightning fast solos, as the band constitutes slamming forward.

Album and set closer on this night, "Crossbreaker", is an old tune that wraps up the set and album with a deep pocket groove around swaggering arena ready riffs, gang vocals and Whetzel's bass thumping along.

This capturing of the bands powerful live show is a great keepsake for those who have caught them, or those who haven't yet for any reason. While Power Trip's studio albums contain more energy and cleaner sound, Live in Seattle 05.28.2018 is a testament to the bands live talents.

It is of Emma Swift's newest release Blonde on the Tracks.

A cover album of Dylan tunes? That's right up our alley.  We reviewed the album for Glide and we will probably showcase these down the road in our Monday Dylan Cover series so we won't say much more here.

RIP Justin Townes Earle

Justin Townes Earle passed away, he was 38.

Unlike a lot of the other people we talk about when they pass, we were not big fans, we were just getting into JTE and that is why the young loss of life hurts. We reviewed his last album and were keeping tabs on him, hoping to catch him live and see what else he had in store.

He will be missed, but his music will live on:

Dylan Cover #442 Sizzla "Subterranean Homesick Blues"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a cover by Sizzla playing "Subterranean Homesick Bluest".

From the first time we posted a cover version of this tune:
One of the most iconic songs from Dylan's most famous period and a very early showing of how powerful a music video could be. Dylan nods to beat poetry, current events, Chuck Berry's "No More Monkey Business", paranoia, and the Vietnam War all in around two minutes of linked lyrics over one of his earliest electric recordings. There is also the sly sense of humor which Dylan never gets enough credit for, while raging against the proverbial machine. A classic '60's tune in all respects and one non-Dylan fans usually love as well.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
Sizzla is artist RtBE became familiar in the late 90's with his reggae/dancehall sound. While we strongly disagree with his anti-LGBT stance and believe it is flat out stupid, we wanted to showcase the most interesting cover on the album...

Thoughts on Cover:
The song that would seem the oddest fit for a reggae style cover is Dylan's pseudo 60's rap poetry, but Sizzla does a cool job of interpreting the tune.  Now if he could only open his mind to the modern world he might be on to something.

The fantastic Valerie June is this weeks Full Show Friday. RtBE has loved both of June's releases that we have reviewed, Pushin' Against A Stone and The Order Of Time. Both albums also made our top ten lists in both 2013 and 2017.

We have never caught her live yet so this is the next best thing a set of her from Knuckleheads Garage in early 2017:

Today we highlight: Halfway to Mardi Gras with John Papa Gros

While it remains to be seen if 2021 will return us to any sense of normalcy connected to pre-Covid times in this country, New Orleans based piano player John Papa Gros is remaining positive. He is hosting a "Halfway to Mardi Gras" stream tonight at 8pm CST:

Here's hoping he is right and Mardi Gras happens next year. A perfect reason to mask up, as long as this virus has receded and a vaccine is in motion. To keep the positive party vibes, here is Gros playing a tune from his recent album Central City titled simply "Mardi Gras":

New Song from North Mississippi Allstars: "Catfish" Featuring Cedric Burnside

The North Mississippi Allstars have a new tune out, with Cedric Burnside guesting, titled "Catfish".

The artists teamed up on NMAS last album as well and we dig NMAS and Burnside having reviewed both of them in the past and caught NMAS live a few times. This is a good one to listen to on this hot summer day:

Album Review: Alison Mosshart - Sound Wheel

Hey all, got a new review up @glidemag which you can read Right C'here!!

It is of Alison Mosshart's Sound Wheel.

The spoken word album was an interesting one to review because it ties to her book of poetry and photos titled Car Ma. Mosshart is an artist who works in multiple mediums, she even released videos for these offerings after the release of the book and album.

We caught her gallery opening in NYC years back and appreciate her craft. Here's hoping she continues to follow her muse wherever it leads her.

Buy the release, read the review and peep some video below:

Dylan Cover #441 JC Lodge "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a cover by JC Lodge playing "Don't Think Twice It's Alright".

This month we are doing another special focus in RtBE's Dylan Covers series. We have covered a song from this collection in our Dylan Cover Series before, so we will skip Toots this month even though that is a good one from this collection.
Thought's on Original:
This song is so iconic and flat out awesome, even people who dislike Dylan have to enjoy this tune right? Biting and yet not bitter, a toss off of the grandest proportions, "Don' Think Twice, It's All Right" is epic and yet so straight forwardly simple. It easily ranks as one of the bard's best works, truly a classic and has been covered by so many people in so many ways.
Cover:
Thoughts on Cover Artist:
RtBE is new to JC Lodge.
Thoughts on Cover:
Not our favorite cover. This one falls into the easy listening section far too easily with programmed drums and soft floating vocals and soprano sax.
