Full Show Friday: Superjam Bonnaroo 2014 (plus Tedeschi Trucks Band)

We search the murky back waters of youtube to find full concerts and post them to the site weekly, come back every seven days to help us celebrate Full Show Friday's. These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...
This week...SuperJam lead by Derek Trucks featuring Chaka Khan, Taj Mahal, Eric Krasno, James Gadson, David Hidalgo, Willie Weeks, Nigel Hall, Ryan Zoidis, Eric Bloom and Adam Deitch with special guests Andrew Bird, Susan Tedeschi, Karl Denson, Ben Folds, and more!

This month we have a special focus on Full Sets from the 2014 Bonnaroo Festival which took place in June down in Tennessee.

We end our monthly live show look back at this years Bonnaroo with a performance which makes the Tennessee festival so special, their Super Jams. Bonnaroo spread from Super Fly Productions which started in New Orleans and were known for putting together great artists for late night jams around Jazzfest...anyone remember that first Oysterhead show

These late night jam sessions make Bonnaroo unlike most shows and each one is highly anticipated. Sometimes they underwhelm and sometimes they are amazing. With all the talent on hand for this one it would be a shame if it was disappointing, thank goodness it isn't. Derek Trucks curated this event and he does a bang up job bringing in A-list talent.

Enjoy: (QUICK NOTE: the original video got taken down before this post went live, it was the full set. Below are a few fan clips from the Superjam and as a bonus some of the Tedeschi Trucks Band set from Bonnaroo this year)

Tedeschi Trucks Band:

(I am sure people who read this site often thought I would end the month with Jack White's set from this years festival, but the SuperJam is pure Bonnaroo and we will talk more about Jack in the near future I am sure.)

Album Review: J Mascis- Tied To A Star

Hey all got a new review up @glidemag which you can read Right C'here!!!
It is of J Mascis new solo disk Tied To A Star.  We have never been shy about our love for J and Dino Jr, he is one of the best guitarists alive and his songs are still undervalued. This disk really impressed us and feels light years better then his first acoustic solo disk, which we actually still like a lot as well. That 4 stars would be about a 7 as well in the new glide rating system.

This one just feels more flushed out, confident and unique. Def worth checking out.

Album Revierw: Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas- Secret Evil

Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas
Secret Evil
***and1/2 out of *****
After some struggles to get released Secret Evil finally sees the light of day and is a winning combo of pop-dance-rock from Detroit's Jessica Hernandez & The Delta's. The artists signed to Blue Note but when the label folded the disk was in limbo, it finally got released on Instant Records and thankfully it was worth the wait.

Hernandez has a unique voice that can act sunshiny and slick as on the single ready "Dead Brains" or get night club sultry like when she dominates a hectic "Downtown Man".  The soulful combo of "Sorry I Stole Your Man" and "Cry Cry Cry" get the retro groove vibe pulsing as Hernadez does her best lounge singer workouts. The disk closer is the sparest arraignment as "Lovers First" gives her a platform to let her voice soar and yet still feel personal.

The modern style of The Deltas ebbs and flows like the tide at times upping the beat and other times relaxing letting Hernandez own the spotlight. The pulsing dance floor ready "Over" pumps the jam as does the Blondie-like disco rock of "Now Place Left To Hide" while the strutting electric guitars and B3 sprinkle flavor on the rock and roll fueled "Caught Up". Those all work better then mid-tempo radio friendly pop of "Neck Tattoo" but things don't stay status quo for long though as "Run Run Run" takes a circus like approach with organs, maracas and dynamic vocals.

That old style of multi-genre Detroit is alive on Secret Evil as rock and roll sits comfortably next to dance pop and R&B. A standout and perhaps the best combination of the band and Hernandez's style is "Tired Oaks" an enigmatic track that pushes along on organ twists and fuzzy bass before an upbeat chorus, all of which is surrounded by an eerie vocal undercurrent. There is a lot to like on the this debut disk and hopefully their second release finds an easier path to public ears.

More Basement Tapes from Dylan and The Band

Our Uncle's over @glidemag have broken the good news that one of the hero's of this site will be dipping into his back catalog from one of the most fertile periods of his history for his next release. Bob Dylan will be releasing his 11th Bootleg Series and this time he is giving us more Basement Tapes.
This period from when the bard played with the band is some of the best American popular music ever recorded. We downloaded some bootleg quality collection titled "The Real" Basement Tapes years back, and this may be the same thing (hopefully with better audio quality) but any which way more music from Big Pink is welcomed.

We love The Band and obviously Bobby so much, so we are looking forward to this. Until then here is an enlightening speech from Robby Robertson talking about that era:

I think it's more then "OK" Robbie....

Dylan Cover #152 The Five Believers "From A Buick 6"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live  performance by The Five Believers doing a cover of "From A Buick 6"
Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we reviewed a cover of this tune:
The electric Dylan and one of the few songs where the Band Bob played with overshadows his early talents. Namely Al Kooper on organ and the great Mike Bloomfield on guitar as the two rip it open.  Bob is in a lighter mood and recalling old blues tunes like "Milk Cow Blues" but he also has a stream of consciousness appeal to the lyrics. Nowhere near one of his best, but one that lots of musicians like to cover because of it's kick ass blues rock feel.
Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
I have not heard of The Five Believers before but I am going to go out on a limb and and guess they are a Dylan Cover band. You can see more of their performances here
Thoughts on Cover:
A pretty straight ahead working of the song with a good beat and better guitar solo to break things up. One thing we can not get into in this series is when people put on a Bob Dylan voice and the lead singer does that here. Sorry not our cup of meat as some singer sings...

This week...Jonathan Wilson!

This month we have a special focus on Full Sets from the 2014 Bonnaroo Festival which took place in June down in Tennessee.

Unlike last week with a band we listen to and reviewed on the site, Jonathan Wilson is brand new to us here at RtBE. Wow, we are impressed. Bluesy pop tinged guitar rock that grooves all over in the vein of Gary Clark Jr. Definitely need to find out more about this artist after listening to this set. It is finding great artists that you never heard of at a festival very exciting, and you can do it without having to use a Port-O-John all weekend....Pro-shot, Pro-Sound

Album Review: Benjamin Booker- Benjamin Booker

Hey all got a new review up @glidemag which you can read Right C'here!!!
It is of Benjamin Booker's first self titled release and it is a doozy of roots retro rock and roll.

This kid has got talent for days and it is great to hear this sound in rock and from NOLA as well. We mentioned Khatib in the review but we see a lot of parallels between the two disks. Both are stripped down no nonsense rock and roll that flows with a retro vibe. Khatib is more polished, Booker more raw. Anyway the disk is pretty Boosh.

Thank You Tom Durkin!

Well it is Travers week and we are excited to be going again. We are not sure, but we are at least up to 12 in a row at this point and are glad that the tradition continues and our friends and family still join us for a great weekend in Saratoga, New York.
To help amp up our excitement, the last few years we have written some of our favorite (and most popular) posts regarding the event. Two years ago we talked about Songs for Gambling on Horses, three years ago we took the money out of it and just talked about Songs for Horses. Last year we addressed maybe the most important aspect to playing the horses, Songs about Luck. This year we are switching it up a bit to pay tribute to one of the most important aspects of Saratoga, Tom Durkin

Album Review: Cymbals Eat Guitars- Lose

Cymbals Eat Guitars
Lose
***and1/2 out of *****
The third album from the Staten Island rockers find them sticking to their guns and blazing their 6-string driven sound straight out of the late 90's into the middle of the '10's. There are lots of touch points for the sound and style on Lose, Built to Spill and Modest Mouse are two quick ones that come to mind but Cymbals Eat Guitars are more then their influences.

Lyrically the group pulls in teen angst, drugs, regret for watching Faces of Death and other touchstones of punk power while vocals still struggle to keep from being buried under the layers of sound. That can be frustrating as the band has something to say and unlike other post/indie/whatever rock bands the vocals are more then just another sound added to the mix. The album is chock full of fantastic lines if you dig a bit. The high point opener "Jackson" is just one example as it is tied up with the emotions of lose, death, love and fear in an intelligent/unique way. It is worth keeping the lyric sheet handy to get the full effect of the tunes.

Verbiage is mostly secondary to the power of the music though as the sonic whirlwinds are colliding and masquerading with ease; digital keyboard bleeps and high end fret work meld gloriously. Like it's name the guitars dominate but there is so much to sift through, the drums and bass propel "Warning", injecting energy into the track and pump up the groove on "Chambers" and "Lifenet". "XR" blows a harmonica to excellently open up its roots punk vibe while disk closer "2 Hip Soul" gets its sprawling electric jam pants on.  An acoustic guitar combines with some piano and wooden blocks for "Child Bride" disguising a painful song.

The album has a lot of pluses and while not always a correct combo ("Place Names" picks up once the singing ends) the fact that front-man Joey D'Agostino tries to match falsetto vocals into the tracks with soaring keys/guitars that experimentation of sound is encouraging.  The group still seems to be trying new things and most work out on Lose.

A track like the sprawling "Laramie" goes through many progressions and phases at 8 minutes, this is the bands bread and butter as it shows the musicianship, power and ingenuity the group strives for. However it is the shorter, more typical "songs" on Lose that show growing maturity and promise for the band in the future and right now.
_______________________________________________________________
We dig this sound and general and like this band in particular having seen them play CMJ way back when in 2009. They have only gotten better and Lose is a winner.

Dylan Cover #151 Mandolin Orange "Boots Of Spanish Leather"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by the Mandolin Orange of the Dylan tune "Boots Of Spanish Leather"
Thoughts On Original:
From the first time we did someone covering this tune, here are my thoughts:
One of the first Dylan songs that really bowled me over.  I know on the Times They Are a-Changin' there are a ton of epic songs but this was the track that stayed with me the longest.  It is ghostly in it's presentation and still just as dynamic now as when he wrote it back in 1963.  My favorite show I have seen Dylan play live was back in 1999 at the RPI Fieldhouse.  The whole night was great, my favorite backing band of his since The Band, a tiny venue and a setlist that was magical.  One of the major highlights was "Boots of Spanish Leather", I need to break out that bootleg this week and re-live that great night.
Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
Have not heard of Mandolin Orange before listening to this. they are an acoustic duo from Chapel Hill, NC and they sound just fine to these ears.
Thoughts on Cover:
A perfect Dylan song for a duet. Just perfect, yet I can't place hearing another duet version, I am sure there are some out there but obviously these lyrics are literally made for this. The group does an excellent job with the relationship dynamics and vocalizing. They do an even better job with the picking and playing. A really dope cover that makes me want to listen to it again the minutes it is finished, then go and find out more about Mandolin Orange.

Album Review: Earthless Meets Heavy Blanket- In A Dutch Haze

Hey all got a new review up @glidemag which you can read Right C'here!!!

This is jam/noise/guitar-soloin'g craziness right here. I said most of what I want to say in the review except when dealing with the star ranking, personally this one is MEGA!!! but I understand this type of rock isn't for everyone so I think 7 stars is a good pick and just make sure you know what you are in for.

Also need to mention the Glide team and editing, I love that the whole crew over there that has let me write for them for, Jesus, I don't even know how long, and I also love they have different senses of what is appropriate for a review. Here is my opening sentence that I sent in:
Stoner/Psych rock geeks get ready to cream in your jeans as a unique pairing of six-string wizards and a jamming rhythm section, one time only improv set from 2012 Roadburn Festival was captured and now released as Earthless Meets Heavy Blanket, In a Dutch Haze.
compared to what they posted:
Stoner/psych fans are sure to get some pelvic region blood flowing from this unique pairing of six-string wizards and a jamming rhythm section are captured in this one time only improv set from the 2012 Roadburn Festival titled Earthless Meets Heavy Blanket/In a Dutch Haze.
Not any sort of deal big or small to me, but I find it very amusing blood better then geeky sploosh? I still love that cream your jeans line I took from The Kentucky Fried Movie...will have to try to use that again sometime. ...Anyways:

Album Review: The Dwarves- The Dwarves Invented Rock and Roll

The Dwarves
The Dwarves Invented Rock and Roll
***and1/2 out of *****
After a surprising "comeback" album in 2011 called The Dwarves are Born Again the Dwarves have once again returned to their bread and butter which they deviated from on 2004's The Dwarves Must Die. That winning formula is a punk rock vibe that at times can veer into hardcore, but will more likely swing into a pop/punk gem

From Chicago but based in San Fransisco the band loves tossing out politically incorrect lyrics and nudity filled cover art but the music is top notch rock. Tracks like "Love Is Fiction" mess with slamming drums and head banging beats, but still manage soaring solos and sing along worthy choruses that could even be considered radio friendly if there was still such a thing.

This disk starts off on a heavy tip with the blistering trio of "Hate Rock", "Bleed Alright" and "Trailer Trash" but the album really comes alive on the fourth offering titled "Kings Of The World". A pop/punk winner that uses a pounding double bass to end things as it crashingly fades out.

The group puts a bit of swing into "Fun To Try" and "Sluts Of The USA" surf rocking their way into groovy choruses that both repeat the title over and over worming them into your brain. "Get Up And Get High" shows off their more hardcore tendencies yet to lesser success "Dead On The Floor" goes for shock value but bores, though the Edgar Allan Poe quote was a nice touch.

The barreling closer of "Anything You Want Is" a really excellently written straight ahead rock song and that seems to be the point when the album wraps up.  Sure, The Dwarves go for shocking but in the end they are just a solid band that throw out 14 quick, energetic and damn good jams with The Dwarves Invented Rock and Roll.
_______________________________________________________________
In the vein of one of our favorites No Redeeming Social Value, The Dwarves keep putting out good to great punk rock disks.

Album Review: Woods- With Light and with Love

Woods
With Light and with Love
**** out of *****

The Brooklyn roots rock trio keep churning out charming and engaging albums that seem to ebb and flow between genres/styles/decades with ease. On With Light and with Love the band has produced its most confident and best album yet touching on what long fans have enjoyed about the band but also brightening production and songs to hopefully ensnare new listeners.

Woods embrace a rich percussion sound (snares, tambourines maraca's) that is consistent from strat to finish. As are the omnipresent jangling guitars and swirling swelling of instrumentation just off in the distance like a singing saw and barroom piano. The B3 organ warbles on "Leaves Like Glass" mix winningly with a deep bass line and light electric guitar, pairing it with the rolling "Only The Lonely" showcases two standout single's on a lesser album but here they just mix into the overall aesthetic of great tunes.

Woods float in those nebulous waters that are hard to capture, a more folk driven group in the same vein of The Men, but where that Brooklyn group goes rock at times here Woods lean more Magical Mystery Tour pop in their 60's influence. Tracks like groovy "Twin Steps" seem right out of that kaleidoscopic era as do "Shining" and "Moving To The Left".

A few tracks have the tone, production and style that should work but can feel a bit uninspired like "Full Moon" and lyrically there isn't a ton going on with front-man Jeremy Earl. Earl's vocals though slightly improved are still an acquired taste and his writing conveys overall generic feelings rather then specific lines that would hammer home these songs into your brain.

You can't talk about this disk without mentioning the title track, a 9 minute affair that wanders, cooks, and gets down in a psychedelic funk manner behind some gloriously fuzzy guitars. Like on "Bend Beyond" the group takes the title track and injects experimentation, a trippy vibe and a song that elevates the whole proceedings above simply 60's era worship.

There is something completely engaging about this album, retro yet forward looking, dirty yet bright, clumsy yet polished. The group is on to something and their fluid nature may send them down a different path in the future but for now all you need for the traveling is to go With Light and with Love
_____________________________________________________________________
We really dug Bend Beyond and what the band were going for, we think they nailed it fully on With Light and with Love. This band gives Brooklyn music a great name.

Dylan Cover #150 Stevie Wonder "Blowin' In The Wind"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a cover by Stevie Wonder playing "Blowin' In the Wind"
 Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this tune:
The classic Dylan song, if you asked 100 people to name you the first Bob Dylan song they thought of, or his best known song, I am guessing 95-99 of them would answer "Blowin' In The Wind".  It is an epic, vital song in the history of recorded music. The lyrics tell a stirring tale, the melody is enchanting, it is pretty spot on perfect, and when it originally came out if announced to the world the greatness that was Bob Dylan.
Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
What else can be said about Stevie Wonder that hasn't been said already? Better yet you think you know the soul/R&B/rock/funk icon? Then watch this and be amazed again by the man.

Thoughts On Cover:
For the big numbers in this series we like to tackle songs of the bard's being performed by legendary artists who are on, close to or above his level. For 100 we had The King crooning, and this time around we get just as cool with Stevie Wonder doing a great version of Dylan's most iconic songs. The version is blissful, soulful and great, there is a sense that he is aching to rip into it even more, something I am sure Wonder did live during this period. Who will be 200? We shall see....

Belated Happy B-Day to James Hetfield: A Musical Tribute

We missed the Metallica front-man's birthday, so happy belated birthday Mr. Hetfield who turned 51 on August 3rd. Most years we wish a Happy Birthday to Jerry Garcia (and our sister) on August 1st but this year we are going for another man from the Bay Area who happens to be the most metal person in the world....
Errr...maybe not these days, but god damn was he ever....
Our friends over at Hyemen and Metalfunkel did not let the glorious moment pass, in fact they recorded a musical tribute to the master of headbanging and they did it in their own turtleneckin' style:

Big up's to Sean Paul and Andrew for an excellent version of the Metallica classic in a form only they can pull off.
They rule...

And just to slam the metal point home here is some killer classic Metallica for the occasion:

Thurston Moore: New Band, Streaming Song, Album Coming.

Just found out one of RtBE's favorites is putting out a new album with a new band (with some old friends) and has a tour on the horizon.
Thurston Moore has announced a new group that he will be playing with later this month in Amsterdam. The band will consist of his Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, My Bloody Valentine's bassist Debbie Googe and instrumentalist James Sedwards.

I am not sure what this does for the future of Chelsea Light Moving, but it is always exciting when Moore is coming out with new music, here is the first new song:

Sounds like a Thurston song, very in his wheelhouse which is fine by us. The new disk should be out in September titled The Best Day. Here is a video with some new songs with the group playing live this past March.

Looking forward to his new disk. Never can have enough Thurston.

Album Review: Has-Lo & Castle- Live Like You're Dead

Has-Lo & Castle
Live Like You're Dead
**and1/2 out of *****
The Arizona based indie hip-hop collective Mellow Music has put out a steady stream of talented MC's and two of them Has-Lo & Castle  have combined here for the mellow reflective and fun Live Like You're Dead.

The duo have natural chemistry with chuckles and side chatter filtering in at various points throughout the 14 song offering. Both seem to be having a hell of a time rhyming about basketball, spelling, late night shenanigans or just dropping sex rhymes to ladies who like to show their big ol' butts over social media. Nothing deep to be rhymed about but for the hot summer days the tracks roll past effortlessly.

Musically the production is easy rolling with experimental flashes and old school tributes. "Famished" ends with scratches and a fade out before the retro dance beat of "Hennessy-Yak Rap" which is a nonsensical track of drunken silliness. "D.L.S" and the title track are the most energetic  tracks with pulsing beats while cricket chirps color "My Uncle". The deep groove of "Stubborn Vice" is appealing while the organ on "Good Feelings (U Must Relax)" feel too thin.

In the end, the disk doesn't really provide any tracks or rhymes that stick around past a spin or two but the effortless flow, chemistry and style still remain appealing.

Dylan Cover #149 Eric Howl "All I Really Want To Do"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a cover by Eric Howl playing "All I Really Want To Do"
 Thoughts on Original:
(From the first time we talked about a cover version of this song)
This song made Dylan leaving the "cause" and "topical songs" behind easier for his hardcore fans to swallow, because really, how can anyone dislike this song?  Simple, playful, loving, sly..."All I Really Want To Do Has it All". Oh and he left nothing behind, in fact he opened up a world of music for the world to experience, be inspired from, and enjoy, long after he is gone.
Cover:

Thoughts On Cover Artist:
I have not heard of Eric Howl before. He is a Folk Singer from Bucks County PA
Thoughts On Cover:
Very straight ahead version of a folk singer doing a Bob Dylan impression. Nothing out of the usual for the cover...until the 1:38 mark where Eric breaks down completely and just whistles the melody a bit. A very nice touch.

This week...Broken Bells!
This month we have a special focus on Full Sets from the 2014 Bonnaroo Festival which took place in June down in Tennessee.

Up first in our look at one of the biggest festivals in the world is Broken Bells. We have never given them a listen, and their sound is pretty cool, dancey mid-tempo rock as you would expect with any Danger Mouse/Shins project. While not the biggest fans of Broken Bells output this set seems like it would have been a pleasant one in the Southern sun.

Enjoy:
