Quick story...
Back in the early nineties I played volleyball at my high school and when we warmed up we were allowed to play music. Well my junior year I decided to take over the music and for our first match I played Arise. We won the match, the next day I was told we couldn't play that again. So we decided to do a mix tape where everyone got to pick a song. Not as intimidating, but more democratic, I guess.
Arise is a hell of an album that is frightening to some, exhilarating to others.
This is where Sepultura really began to open up their thrash/death metal sound to more outside influences like industrial, hardcore, and the band's Brazilian roots. I remember first noticing these touches of uniqueness amongst the loud sounds, and realizing that this kind of music could be nuanced. In that sense Arise was a breakthrough album to my mind, but even with all of that added flair, the thrash/death foundation is so killer just to get down with.
I was lucky enough to catch the band when they were in the midst of their Chaos A.D. tour and while I know a lot of my fellow hardcore fans like that album better, Arise will always be the Sepultura record RtBE will reach for first when it comes to this band.
So on its 35th anniversary, play it loud. Here are some songs to get you started:
