“After some vocal injuries a few years ago I started riding bikes, I was a runner, but the doctor told me to avoid it for the time being because the heavy breathing could inflame the hemorrhaging in my vocal cords. It’s where I first got the idea for ‘Kickstand.’ The song itself is about recovery and starting over and the mess you make on the way. It could be about codependent relationships and that period of time where you recognize what’s going on but you’re still afraid to let go; then you finally do.
“I think it’s fitting that ‘Kickstand’ sounds like something you’d hear on college radio or 120 Minutes in the ’90s. In some ways, we never fully let go of the past.”
