The newest EP from the Los Angeles, CA based artist Betty Moon is her first record of original material since Cosmicoma in 2021. Titled Strangely Beautiful, the artist delivers five efforts that run the gamut of styles.
Moon is an artist who wants to experiment and try different sounds, sometimes from line to line, searching for connection and meaning. The brief EP opens with a clicking intro before the theatrical piano and stirring strings start "Last Night". Even with the well produced sounds, Moon's dramatic vocals are the highlight, soaring and delivering emotive power.
Tonally each effort shifts Moon's sound and style and the follow up "A Taxi Ride" sounds as if she sampled an unused effort from Beck, as the funky beats and strutting guitar riffs are great get-down backing for Moon's sultry moans. "Hunger Pain" uses slapping drums and twangy riffs in Rolling Stones rock fashion while the album ends with a neon shimmering pop number "Want Me To".
Unfortunately things mix in less successful fashion for "Soulfly", an odd beast that tries to incorporate lounge laden chilled grooves and alt-rock power with clanging accents. The track feels sown together and doesn't work as well as the others.
However, Betty Moon is never afraid to experiment and this switching up of styles proves anything goes with the artist. The Strangely Beautiful EP is a strong sampling of Moon's styles, which can inspire her to move in any direction at any time.
